One of the most commonly used pieces of equipment in an esthetician's office is a Wood's lamp. A Wood's lamp uses ultraviolet light that visually exposes any disorders of the skin like fungus, bacterial infections or unusual pigmentation. Dehydrated, damaged or oily areas of skin can also be detected. An esthetician may also use a magnifying lamp and a skin scanner, which allows the client to see his or her face under the UV light.

An esthetician will typically need a steamer, an exfoliating brush, a vacuum and spray tool, and a microdermabrasion machine. A steamer uses warm vapor to open the pores and soften impurities in the skin, while an exfoliating brush is rubbed across the skin to loosen dead cells. A vacuum suction tool is used to remove oil and dirt from the pores, and the spray attachment is used for applying skin care lotions.

Some estheticians use machines to smooth cellulite. These machines often have infrared lights which help protect the collagen in the skin. For skin rejuvenation, an esthetician may use a laser light. This type of tool pulses light waves into the pores to eliminate pigmentation. Laser treatments can also be provided as hair removal. LED light may also be used at the end of the treatment in order to enhance the texture and tone of the skin.

Other standard tools for an esthetician include chemical peel solutions, special cosmetic serums, waxes and applicators. Some estheticians may use special makeup on a client in order to temporarily camouflage any bruising or scarring. In these cases, cream-based foundations and small tipped, specially designed brushes may also be used by the esthetician.
