There continue to be issues which affect our local communities. Issues which if our representatives and congressmen would ad- dress more positively, could be changed. While education is the Civil Rights Issue for the Bethlehem Unit, it is evident that conversations must continue about delivery of quality education and press the representatives to cut off funding for CHARTER SCHOOLS. We continue to believe that if African American children are not academically successful by third grade they will become future inmates or wards of the state. Continuing to provide money to operate charter schools is counterproductive. With the reports generated our representatives contend that this allows families to place their children in any school setting they wish (private or charter schools) rather than choose public education. Pure and simple charter schools are supported by “persons for profit,” business men. I contend that this is not a democratic or republican issue it is a human factor. African Americans recognize the existing injustices and inequities leveled at us from the courts. More and more we’ve watched as sentences are metered out to African Americans and persons of color and other minorities - we get the limit. It is evident we can no longer depend on our elected officials to support the views or support the “people who cannot speak for themselves.” We thank Dr. Joseph Roy, Bethlehem Superintendent of Schools and other local education leaders who strive to ensure African American children and children of Esther M. color from the low income/disadvantage strata continue to be inspired to have a positive learning experience. In Bethlehem while we have not seen or had our local policemen use excessive force however this does not reflect the actions of police and law enforcement in other cities. We again thank Chief Mark DiLuzio for his openness and availability in discussing this subject. To date there are four African American men employed as officers with one African American officer recently promoted to lieutenant. Conversation with our community leaders will continue as we seek ongoing support and inclusiveness for children, families and the underprivileged in Bethlehem. Homelessness is one of our issues. The Bethlehem NAACP has been very open and on watch for the activities which occur in our city and throughout the country; we continue to seek inclusiveness. With so much at stake for us as a people, we must encourage everyone, especially people of color that voting is of the utmost importance. We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America… People we must continue to stay on the wall watching continually. Join the local NAACP unit. The struggle continues!

LIFT EVERY VOICE AND SING (National Negro Hymn)

1. Lift every voice and sing, til earth and heaven ring, ring with the harmonies of liberty; let our rejoicing rise high as the list’ning skies, let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
