staff from Men-Tsee-Khang displayed exhibition on Thangkas, Sorig herbal products and Men-Tsee-Khang publications and books by and about H. H the Dalai Lama. A number of visitors ranging from AYUSH practitioners /medical experts to the college students visited the Men-Tsee-Khang stall where our team briefed them on Men-Tsee-Khang and traditional Tibetan medicine. Besides the exhibition, the doctor also gave health consultation to more than 150 patients and advised them on healthy diet and lifestyles.

MEDICAL CAMP

Mobile camp to nomadic areas of Jangthang● A mobile medical camp to Jangthang, the remote areas of Ladakh was organized from 7-17 October, 2019 by the Ladakh Culture Center, Men-Tsee-Khang. Dr. Thinley Namgyal, Mr. Sherab Dorjee and Mr. Tenzin Tharlam visited the remote areas of Samedh, Chumur, Sumdho, Kagshung, Goyul, Hanley, Magyue grazing place, Rongo, Nyoma and Army Vikas Camp at Karey. During the 11 days, 453 patients received health consultations and medicine worth Rs. 2,44,665.77 was given as charity during the mobile camp. ● A doctor and two staff from Men-Tsee-Khang Ladakh conducted the 5th Jangthang Mobile tour from 20-29 November, 2019. A total of 413 patients were consulted by the doctor and charity medicine amounting to Rs. 2,04,097.16 were provided.

DharamsalaMen-Tsee-Khang (Sowa-Rigpa) organized a 2-day medical camp at the courtyard of Tsuglagkhang, Dharamsala on 7-8 November, 2019. The medical team consisted of 3 doctors, 1 Astro-Science Practitioner, and

six Administrative staff members. The doctors and Astro-Science Practitioner rendered 202 health consultations, 9 Kam-Khab (Acupuncture) & 1 Golden needle treatments, and 10 oral-astro consultations. Charity medicine amounting to Rs. 21,583.76 was given to the poor and needy patients.

OUTREACH TOURS

USA East Coast A team of two staff from Men-Tsee-Khang: Tibetan Astro-Science Practitioner (TASP) Mr. Kunga Dhondup and Mrs. Sonam Lhamo, College Secretary; assisted by former Men-Tsee-Khang doctor Dr. Choeying Phuntsok conducted the USA east coast tour from 1-30 October 2019. The trio member organized outreach tours consisted of health and oral-astro consultations, a series of lectures and an exhibition on Tibetan Medicine and Tibetan Astro-Science in New York, Boston, Philadelphia and Washington DC.

The doctor and TASP rendered 180 health consultations and 39 oral-astro consultations during the tour. The team were interviewed by Radio Free Asia in Washington DC as well.

HEALTHY BODY, HEALTHY MIND: CELEBRATING 103 YEARS OF MEN-TSEE-KHANG’S PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICEThe programme consisted of free Health consultations, a 75% Discount on Oral-Astro Consultation, a series of lectures and an exhibition on Tibetan medicine and Astro-science.

Bengaluru. The inaugural ceremony was graced by the Chief Guest Mr. Prakash, Honorary Consulate of Czech Republic; Guest of Honor Mr. Harsha Vardhan, Additional Commissioner of Customs & GST; and the other special guests Prof. Dr. Father Mathew Chandrankunnel, Director of Ecumenical Christian Center and Mr. Niranjan, General Secretary of Indo-Tibetan Friendship Society.

The doctors and TASP provided 84 health consultations and 32 oral-consultations respectively.

MysoreMysore Outreach event was organized at the Institution of Engineers, Mysore from 22-24 October 2019. The event was inaugurated by the Chief Guest Lakshmi Narayana Rao Undale, Principal and Professor of Chemistry, Govt. Pre University College, Mysore. The other guests were Mr. Thupten Tsering, Settlement Officer, and Mr. Tsewang Tenzin, Officer of Nyamdel, Hunsur Rabgyaling settlement.

The team rendered 35 health consultations and 3 oral-astro consultations services during the 3-day programme.

TawangMen-Tsee-Khang conducted a 4-day outreach tour from

28-31 October, 2019 during the Tawang Festival 2019 organized by Tourism Department of Arunachal Pradesh. The United States Ambassador to India Mr. Kenneth I. Juster inaugurated the 4-day event along with the Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Shri. Pema Khandu; Mr. Kiren Rijiju, Minister of State (Independent Charge) of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and Minister of State in the Ministry of Minority Affairs of India; and Consul General Ms. Patti Hoffman.

The doctor consulted 300 patients and the TASP provided 20 oral-astro consultations.

JaigaonAn outreach tour at the Men-Tsee-Khang Jaigaon Clinic was held from 8-10 November 2019. The Chief Guest Shri Bishnu Lama, Pradhan of Gram Panchayat 1, lighted the butter lamp to the portrait of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. Sweetened rice and tea were served to the audience where more than 50 people gathered for the occasion.

A total of 226 health consultations, 15 oral-astro consultations and 2 lectures were given by the doctor and TASP.

SalugaraSalugara outreach programme was held from 12-14 November 2019 at Men-Tsee-Khang Salugara Clinic. The event was inaugurated by the Chief Guest Shri Sonam Wangdi, Commissioner of Siliguri Municipal Corporation; Special Guest Shri Sonam Lhundup, General Secretary of H.B.C.A. Salugara; and Shri C.L. Denjongpa, Former Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, West Bengal. Around 90 audiences participated in the event.

A total number of 193 patients consulted the doctors while 27 interested people received oral-astro consultations.

JaipurThe programme at Jaipur was held from 22-25 November 2019 at the ground in front of the Jaipur branch clinic. The Chief Guest on the occasion was Mr. Dinesh Kawat, Muncipal Corporation and the Special Guest was S.P. Yadav, Director of Shree Narayana Hospital. Mr. Shyam Sunder Kabra and Mr. Mahendra Goyal, sponsors of the event and Mr. Dilip were the Chief Guests and Special Guest during the closing ceremony.

The doctors gave health consultation to 349 patients and 23 people received oral-astro consultations.

KolkataThe event in Kolkakta started from 22-24 November 2019 at the Kolkata Branch Clinic. The occasion was graced by Dr. Pranab Kumar Singha Roy, President of Ayurved Parishad as the Chief Guest and Mrs. Santasree Chaudhuri, Award Wining Social Enterpreneur & Women’s Rights Activist and Poet as the Guest of Honour.

During the event, 210 patients received heatlh consultations and oral-astro consutlations were given to 22 consultees. Patients from Asansol and Jharkhand also came for health consultations.

Delhi Delhi event was held from 29 November to 2 December, 2019 at Men-Tsee-Khang Nizamuddin Branch Clinic. The event was inaugurated in the presence of Chief Guest Mr. Dhundup Gyalpo, General Secretary of Bureau Office, Delhi; Special Guests Mrs. Jaya Jaitley, Former President of Samta Party and Mr. Sunil wadera, Ex. secretary of Nizamuddin East Colony Association (NECA).

The doctors and TASP rendered 714 health consultations and 36 oral-astro consultations during the event. The event was covered by Jagran Josh Current Affair newspaper.

MumbaiMen-Tsee-Khang (Sowa-Rigpa) successfully conducted an outreach event at three different places in Mumbai, from 17-23 November 2019.

The first 2-day event held at Lakhani Banquet Hall, West Malad, was organized by Ms. Jalpa Vithalani and her beloved family. The inaugural ceremony was graced by Chief Guest: Mr. Aneel Kashi Murarka, CEO of Mirachem Industries, Industrialist & Social worker; Guest of Honor: Shri Jay Prakash Thakur, Ex president BJP Maharashtra, social worker accompanied by his son Deepak Thakur, Municipal Cooperator and Special Guest: Dr. Vinay Jacob from the renowned Bombay Hospital, top Plastic & Reconstructive Micro Surgeon in India.

The second event was held at Parasdham Medical Centre, Ghatkopar East which was organized by Friends of Men-Tsee-Khang Mr. Himanshu Bai, Mrs. Inna Ben, Mr. Vipul Bai, Mr. Parish Bai and their families and supported by Parasdham Medical Centre. The event was Inaugurated by the Chief Guest Mr. Parag K Shah, Philanthropist & BJP Municipal Councilor in 2017; Guest of Honor: Mr. Viral Doshi, President of Parasdham Medical Centre and Special Guest: Mr. Ashok Parekh, Committee Member of Parasdham Medical Centre.

The last event was organized in collaboration with Friends of Tibet at the Indian Institute of Technology, Powai Mumbai. Mr. Tushar Gandhi, Great-Grandson of Mahatma Gandhi accompanied by his family was the Chief Guest at the event. The team provided 950 free health consultations, and 67 oral-astro consultations.

Secunderabad Men-Tsee-Khang organized an event for three days at

Secunderabad branch clinic from 28-30 December 2019. The event also marked the 10th Founding Anniversary of the Clinic. The Inaugural function was graced by Shri Etela Rajendra, Hon’ble Minister of Medical, Health and Family Welfare of Telangana State as the Chief Guest and Mr. Muthaa Gopal, MLA of Musheerabad as a Guest. The others dignitaries present were Mr. Rama Krishna Raju, well-wisher of Men-Tsee-Khang and Mr. Rama Chandra Raj, Sponsor of Men-Tsee-Khang medical camp at Bhimavarun. The Chief Guest mentioned that Men-Tsee-Khang is doing a commendable service for the people of Telangana and Andhara Pradesh and assured every possible help from the Telangana Government. He further on assured Telangana State Government supports in promoting Tibetan Medicine as the part of AYUSH, along with Unani and Homeopathy medicines.

Mr. Ramesh Chandra Pandit, District Governor of Lions Club International 320A and Mr. Murli Krishna, well-wisher of Men-Tsee-Khang, were the Chief Guest and the Special Guest at the closing ceremony.

The branch clinic doctors consulted 303 patients and TASP Miss Sonam Tsamchoe provided oral-astro consultations to 34 people in three days. The event was given media coverage by four different newspapers namely Sakshi, Nameste Telanga, Andhra Bhoomi, and Enadu.

Ahmadabad Healthy Body Healthy Mind: Celebrating 103 years of Men-Tsee-Khang’s Public Health Service event was organized at Men-Tsee-Khang branch clinic in Ahmadabad from 20-22 December 2019 presided by Mr. Manoj Bhai Vadodaria, sponsor of the branch clinic as the Chief Guest and Dr. Ajay Patel as the Special Guest.

To share the effectiveness of Tibetan medicine, Dr. Ajay Patel mentioned that being an allopathic doctor, he was not able to cure the diseases one of his relatives

was diagnosed with. After many failed attempts, they then tried Tibetan Medicine for treatment and saw the positive effects of Tibetan Medicine. Together with his friend, he believes that the holistic approach of Tibetan Medicine will benefits the patients, which leads to the opening of Ahmadabad branch clinic in 2007. The media coverage for the event was given by local news channel VTV.

During the 3-day event, the doctors gave health consultation to 326 patients and TASP Tenzin Tsundue provided 52 oral-astro consultations.

ChennaiThe event in Chennai was conducted from 10-12 January 2020 at Chennai branch clinic. The Chief Guests at the event were Mrs. Pushpachari (Men-Tsee-Khang well-wisher) and Mrs. Asha Reddy (long-time supporter of Tibet). The Chief Guest Mrs. Pushpachari thanked Men-Tsee-Khang for hosting the event in Chennai and shared her journey with Men-Tsee-Khang in Chennai.

BhubaneswarAs 2020 is the the year of ‘Thank You H.H the 14th Dalai Lama’ declared by Central Tibetan Administration (CTA),

Men-Tsee-Khang organized “Healthy Body Healthy Mind: Celebrating 104 year of Men-Tsee-Khang’s Public Health Service and the year of Thank You H.H the 14th Dalai Lama’ event from 10-12 January 2020 at Men-Tsee-Khang branch clinic in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. A team of

five staff from Dharamsala and three from the branch clinic hosted the event comprised of health & oral consultations, a series of lectures and an exhibition on Tibetan Medicine and Astro-Science. The Chief Guest for the occasion was Shri Nikhunj Dhal, IAS, the Principal Secretary of Health, Government of Odisha and Shir Barada Prasanna Das, Joint Director, Information and Public Relation Department as the Special Guest. Ven. Tenpal, the Abbot of Rigon Mindrolling Monastery and Mr. Chonor Samdup, Officer Representative of Odisha Tibetan Settlement were also present at the event. The doctors and TASP rendered health care service to 370 patients and oral-astro consultation to 40 interested people.

SADAK TRUKCHOE (EARTH APPEASING)

The students and staff of Men-Tsee-Khang performed Sadak Trukchoe on 11 October, 2019 at Triund, Dharamsala.

The Sadak are the “Lords of the Earth”, spirits which dwell on land to protect the environment. The Sadak become irritated when their home, the Earth is disturbed. Every year Men-Tsee-Khang holds the prayers and rituals of Sadak Trukchoe on a specific astrologically favorable date. This ritual is to appease those lords and to calm the agitated spirit caused by human. This ritual will bring prosperity to the land, ensure the abundance of flora and balances the environment.

OBITUARY

Dr. Yeshi Dhonden, former Personal Physician to His Holiness the Dalai Lama passed away on 26 November, 2019 at 2 a.m. All the staff, students and wagers of Men-Tsee-Khang condole the sad demise of Dr. Yeshi Dhonden, who was an inspiration and the forerunner of Men-Tsee-Khang in the preservation and promotion of Tibetan medicine in exile.

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama re-established Men-Tsee-Khang, Tibetan Medical and Astro. Institute in Dharamsala on 23 March, 1961. The Institute initially started with a doctor and an astro-science practioner with ten students in two separate campuses in Dharamsala called Chopra House and Glenmore Cottage. Dr. Yeshi Dhonden was the only doctor and the first teacher of the

Medicine School and served as the Personal Physician to His Holiness the Dalai Lama for 20 years.

He served as the Director of Men-Tsee-Khang from 1961 to 1967. He opened a private clinic in 1969 and travelled to the West to present lectures on Tibetan medicine. He is considered an icon on traditional Tibetan medicine and practices, and renowned for his contribution to cancer treatment. He is a foremost expert and proponent of Sowa Rigpa, a traditional Tibetan medicine system practised thousands of years in Tibet.

Dr. Yeshi Dhonden received the prestigious Padma Shri Award, the fourth highest civilian award in the Republic of India from The President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind at the Civil Investiture Ceremony, at Rashtrapati Bhavan, in New Delhi on March 20, 2018 for his contribution in medicine. He is the first in the State of Himachal Pradesh to receive the prestigious award from the Government of India.

A new Kachupa Degree for Non-Tibetan is launched under the blessing of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and the visionary guidance of Men-Tsee-Khang Director, Mr. Tashi Tsering Phuri. Kachupa Degree is 5+1 (1 year internship) course in Tibetan medicine (Sowa-Rigpa), Tibetan Astro-Science and Buddhist Philosophy. The course will start from March 2021. Men-Tsee-Khang has been conducting medical camp for past consecutive years to benefits the people and to spread the awareness on Tibetan Medicine.

As 2020 being the year of ‘Thank You H. H. the 14th Dalai Lama’ declared by Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), Men-Tsee-Khang will organize medical camp theme “ Healthy Body Healthy Mind: Celebrating 104 year of Men-Tsee-Khang’s Public Health Service and the Year of Thank You H. H the 14th Dalai Lama’ in various cities in India. Men-Tsee-Khang will organize the medical camp comprised of health consultations, oral-astro consultations, lectures/workshops/exhibition on Tibetan Medicine & Tibetan Astro-Science in 14 cities.

Our outreach tours to USA East Coast/Canada, Europe, USA West Coast and South America conducted between April 2016 and December 2019 have been a great success due to the efforts of various support groups. Above all, the encouragement we received and the experiences we gained, contributed to our initiating more world tours. Our subsequent tours to various places have also been a great success.

We plan to conduct more outreach tours (health consultations, oral-astro consultations, lectures/workshops on Tibetan Medicine & Tibetan Astro-Science, exhibition, sale of health products) every year.

We also organized overseas outreach tours in USA East Coast, Australia, and USA West Coast. We are planning to conduct similar outreach tours in Europe and South America.

ANNOUNCEMENT

Men-Tsee-Khang (Sowa-Rigpa) is pleased to start Kachupa Degree course for non-Tibetans. Kachupa Degree is 5+1 (1 year internship) course in Tibetan medicine (Sowa-Rigpa), Tibetan Astro-Science and Buddhist Philosophy. The medium of instruction is Tibetan language. So, those who have a fairly good knowledge of the language can join for the 5+1 year course in March 2021. Those who do not have the basics in Tibetan language must attend 6-8 months language course starting July 2020.

Whether an applicant can join for the 5+1 year course in March 2021 without attending the 6-8 months Tibetan language course will be decided by Men-Tsee-Khang by giving tests.

Allotment of Seats: The seats will be given on gender equality basis. Two-third of the seats will be for SPECIAL CATEGORY and the remaining one-third will be for GENERAL CATEGORY. Those applying under the SPECIAL CATEGORY must obtain recommendations from a competent authority of the respective countries/states. SPECIAL CATEGORY seats are for the applicants from Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Russia, Mongolia, Kalmykia, Buriyat and Tuva. The Tibet Culture and Information Centre, Moscow’s recommendation is a must for those applying from Russia, Mongolia, Kalmykia, Buriyat and Tuva.

The countries which are not mentioned under Special category fall under the GENERAL CATEGORY. Recommendation letter is not needed.

Education Qualification: The medium of instruction is in Tibetan. Having a good knowledge of Tibetan language is the top criterion for the course. Age and seat availability are also factors.

For those applying under the Indian States of Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh, class 12 certificate established by AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, Homeopathy)Ministry is a must in order to obtain a recognized Kachupa Degree and employment in India. For non-Indians, admission will be based on series of tests in Tibetan language (spoken, written, memorizations, et cetera), 2-3 interviews by 5-member Interview Boards, country-representations, et cetera.

Employment opportunity in Men-Tsee-Khang: The sole purpose of starting the Kachupa Degree for Non-Tibetans is to share the valuable knowledge of Tibetan medicine and Astro-Science so that they can serve their communities after obtaining Kachupa Degree. Men-Tsee-Khang will train the applicants but will not offer job opportunity in it. The candidates must return to their own country/state to start their profession.

Age Limit and Waver: The age limit for this degree is 18-35 years. However, the college may decide to waive the maximum age limit depending on the class size and the qualifications of an applicant whose age is above 35 years.

Tests, Interviews and Admission by the College: dCollege (Dharamsala College) will conduct tests, interviews and give admissions to both the categories of students, SPECIAL CATEGORY & GENERAL CATEGORY. Since the college is on winter-break and will reopen on March 12, 2020, the Outreach and Development Department will receive the Application Forms (due Wed, March 11, 2020), answer questions, and assess skills of the applicants in Tibetan language.
