Welcome to West Valley Light Opera Association’s

First Production of its 43rd Season

If you enjoy the community theater productions you have seen in this theater, tell your friends and pick up the fliers/brochures/cards in the lobby. There are holders on the walls by the side entrance for both West Valley Light Opera and Saratoga Drama Group which contain information on upcoming productions, cards to place your name on their mailing lists and order forms for tickets to their future productions. Please feel free to take them and use them for future reference. It is only through your support that we are able to bring you such “professional” productions at such a reasonable price.

Thank you for your continued support.

LAST CHANCE TO SUBSCRIBE FOR THE NEW SEASON: 2008-2009

We invite you to become a subscriber to our upcoming season with a Special Offer! If you purchased an individual ticket to this production, we offer you the opportunity to turn in your ticket stub for a credit on a sub-scription for our 2008–2009 season. To take advantage of this offer, obtain a Subscription Form from the lobby, complete the form, attach your ticket stub which shows the performance date and assigned seat and remit it with a stamped, self-addressed envelope along with your check or credit card number for the balance of the subscription. Send them to WVLO at the address shown on the Subscription Form. We will then process this form, assign your seats for the remaining productions of “Damn Yankees!” and “Grease” and mail your tickets. Don’t miss this chance to enjoy the rest of our 43rd season!!! Offer good only until December 2, 2007!!!

Please patronize our advertisers—and when you do, tell them you saw their ad in the WVLOA program! Be part of WVLOA’s success by advertising in our season programs. Your ad will be seen by over 15,000 patrons in a full season. Call Marge Hand at (408) 356-7340—she will set up an ad that will work for you.

Indulge in the pleasures of afternoon tea.The world slows down once you enter Lisa’s Tea Treasures Tea Room & Gift Parlour. The tantalizing

aromas of freshly baked scones and fragrant tea blends waft through the air. As you settle into an elegant armchair or settee, the soft glow of lamps and the perfume of tea begin to work their soothing magic.

A Note from the Director

Almost everyone knows Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice as the famous musical theater collaborators responsible for “Jesus Christ Superstar” and “Evita”. Webber went on to write some of the longest-running musicals ever, including “Cats”, “Phantom Of the Opera” and “Sunset Boulevard”, while Rice co-authored “Chess”, Sidney’s Broadway production of “The Lion King”, and, with Elton John, “Aida” (which graced WVLO’s stage last year). However, it is not as well known that “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcota” was their very first attempt at writing a musical together. It was done as a graduation exercise for a private English school in 1968, and it was originally all of fifteen minutes long. Webber and Rice decided to keep improving it over the course of the next twelve years, eventually expanding it to its current length (although at just over 1-1/2 hours, it is still one of the shortest musicals ever!). It didn’t open on Broadway until 1982, many years after they had already achieved fame.

“Joseph…Dreamcoat” takes the well-known Biblical story of Joseph and his coat of many colors, and re-tells it in a way that makes it accessible to everyone. Without dialogue, it mixes songs of a variety of musical genres (including the Broadway ballad, rock & roll, country-western and Calypso) and fuses them into a remarkably entertaining and fast-moving story. It is regularly seen in professional theaters as well as in church, school and community theaters around the world, a testament to its popularity and appeal.

Many thanks to our marvelous cast, as well as our remarkable production staff. Working with them has been a wonderful exercise in creativity. A special thanks to my Producer who had the confidence in me to let me take this show and run with it. Working with this outstanding team has been a luxury that I have enjoyed immeasurably and I look forward to doing it again!

Live theater is indeed a magical collaboration, the most important part of which is between the performers and audience. You are a part of something very special when you are seated with your neighbors in a darkened theater waiting for the overture to start. So now, I invite you all to sit back and let the magic begin . . .

—Jon Rosen

and cultural programs such as ours. Here in the Bay Area, we are fortunate to have many companies that have initiated such programs. Remember, matching contri-butions are not automatic. YOU must notify your employer of your donation, usually at the time you make it. If you are employed by one of these companies and are one of our supporters, take advantage of this wonderful way to support one of your favorite non-profit associations, WVLO. It isn’t too late to match your contribution for this season.

Whenever you donate to a non-profit group like WVLOA, you can double your contribution to the organization by taking advantage of your company’s matching gift program (even after retirement). Perhaps the most popular way for com-panies to make charitable contributions is through a matching contribution pro-gram wherein the company will match, usually one-to-one, the donation one of their employees gives to a favorite char-ity. And often, these companies will only match contributions made to develop arts

IN MEMORIAMJOHN P. HEALY, JR.

October 12, 1951 – August 26, 2007

The theatrical community lost a unique and dedicated member of its com-

munity in August. John P. Healy, Jr. began as a performer with West Valley Light

Opera in the 1970’s (including “The Student Prince”, “Anything Goes”, “How

To Succeed…” and “Sweethearts”) before he founded the Children’s Musical

Theater of San Jose and the Gilbert & Sullivan Society. In the late 1980’s and

1990’s, he switched to directing and brought 8 very entertaining and successful

musicals to our stage. He directed two “Oklahoma!” productions, 1980 and again

in 1991; “My Fair Lady”, “Irene”, “The Music Man”, “Singin’ In the Rain”, “Meet

Me In St. Louis” and “West Side Story”. He had spent many years as the drama

teacher at Lincoln High School and received national recognition for his creative

high school productions. He moved to Cameron Park with his lovely, talented

and devoted wife, Dee Dee, and continued his passion for teaching and com-

munity theater at the high schools there and the El Dorado Community Theater.

John was an excellent cellist, dancer, singer, actor, and all-around musician.

His knowledge of the stage, lighting, set design, sound and all things technical

were unmatchable in the Bay Area and his local admirers, friends and family

celebrated his incredible life on Sunday, October 7th. We will miss this talented

man who brought so much to the arts and theater in Silicon Valley.
