UPPINGHAMCREATING A LEGACY FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS
EstablishingWorld Class Scienceat Uppingham
In 2006 I announced an ambitious master-plan for the
western part of Uppingham’s campus, known as the
Western Quad. Despite challenging times, the Sports
Centre was completed on time and on budget in
September 2010 and was officially opened by Lord Coe in
March 2011. We are now ready to embark on the final
phase with the creation of the Western Quad itself,
incorporating a new Science Centre and extension to the
Leonardo Arts Centre. Our aim is to begin construction
on-site in the Summer of 2012.
From the approach and entrance into the new Science
building it will be clear that this is a very different
environment from the functional and sterile atmosphere
that can pervade many Science faculties. Within the
‘Destination Science’ building, I envision an attractive, open
atrium which can house study and research spaces with
resources for the entire Western Quad. There will be
exhibition spaces displaying artefacts, scientific objects and
artworks which spark the imagination and connect with
work in the adjacent Arts Centre. The ethos of the new
Science building will aim to open up Science to all, and to
facilitate links between Science and other academic and
extracurricular pursuits. By creating a world class facility
for teaching and learning, our aim is to inspire new
generations of young people to see Science as an exciting
and attractive subject to study. We want to deliver the
best possible Science education.
In the last decade more than £40m has been invested in
Uppingham’s building programme, helping to transform the
School and ensure the education we provide is of the
highest standard. My warmest thanks to all OUs, parents,
staff and Trustees, without whose support none of this
would have been possible. Your continued help towards the
final stage of the Western Quad development will be
greatly appreciated.

“The coming generations of young people
have an absolute need to grow up in an
environment where science, mathematics,
computer science, medicine and engineering can
flourish alongside the arts. It is also essential that
examples are set as to what is possible – only
through such examples will society as a whole
aim sufficiently high.”

Existing Science
Advances in technology and Science are transforming our
world at an incredible pace, and our children’s future will
be filled with leaps in technology we can only imagine.
However, too many young people are uninspired by their
encounter with Science in schools and there are concerns
that too few talented young people are attracted to
Science-related careers. Yet Science is an intensely
human, intensely creative, enterprise – it dominates our
lives and presents society with tremendous opportunities
and challenges. It is exciting and perplexing, disturbing
and enlivening.
The aim of the new Science Centre at Uppingham is to
inspire pupils to embrace the opportunities which Science
will present to them and prepare them for Science subjects
at top universities and careers in medicine, engineering,
research, and technology. At the heart of the Science
building there will be a generous atrium space for exhibits,
artefacts, artwork and experiments. Elsewhere the building
will also contain a resource and study centre, science
library, project room, environmental laboratory and a two-
storey greenhouse. The main teaching areas for Chemistry,
Physics and Biology will be located over three floors, with
each subject benefiting from five spacious and well-
equipped teaching laboratories.
The new Science Centre will have the best of current
technologies to develop the quality of teaching and
learning, and prepare students for technological changes in
the world outside. The building’s teaching spaces have
been carefully designed to be adaptable to other disciplines
which may feature in the future Science curriculum. There
will be an outdoor rooftop classroom and the entire site
will be powered by the energy efficient Combined Heat
and Power plant situated in the nearby Sports Centre.
This project will give Uppingham a world-class Science
Centre fit for preparing young minds for the scientific
challenges of the 21st century.
Future of Science
“The Science subjects are currently strong at
Uppingham with excellent results and a healthy
uptake but we have outgrown the current
buildings (1957 and 1966), which are now
cramped and uninspiring. As you can see from
the plans the new Science Centre will house
inspiring spaces in which to teach, to learn, to
experiment, to share ideas, and to research:
Science will, for he first time in generations,
have state-of-the-art facilities from which every
pupil will benefit. The Faculty has been part of
the design process and the result is a
remarkable building.”

Ground Floor Plan of the New Science Centre
As you can see from this brochure our aim is to build a
truly inspirational Science Centre, one which meets the
needs of today’s Science curriculum but which is adaptable
enough to meet future demands. The transformation of
Science will complete a great cycle of development at
Uppingham and will bring countless benefits to the School
and indeed the wider society. If we are to make this vital
investment in Science we need the support and generosity
of all OUs, parents and friends who care about the future
of our great School.

Destination Science
“In the 21st century Science more than ever
underpins both our culture and our welfare.
Scientists must be cultivated at an early age, and
the new Centre at Uppingham will serve to
inspire top talent and deliver motivated students
to our universities and beyond.”
