BOX 32, YUCAIPA, CA 92399-0032 Sponsored by The Yucaipa Branch Library December 2012—VOLUME 30 NO. 12 President’s Message: Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and the best of the holidays to all. There are several things that I would like to bring to you as we close 2012. Some of these items will have more detail in the newsletter but let me recap them here. We are continuing our tradition of the December meeting being a Christmas potluck. This year it will be at the Yucaipa Branch Library, our regular meeting place on December 8, from 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm. In honor of the release of the 1940 Census this year our Christmas party will have a 1940’s flavor. If you can, dress with a hint to 1940’s fashion and music will be of the 1940’s Christmas sounds. If you have any family pictures taken around 1940 that you would like to share with everyone, please bring them. I look forward to the table decoration that some of you indicated that you would bring. If any others would like to bring something to decorate a table we will be using some round and some long tables, we could use the loan of a few more centerpieces. I look forward to good food, sharing family Christmas stories, music and a great time to visit with each other. All is not fun and games so we will take some time on December 8 for the election of officers for 2013 and Jamie is planning an instillation of officers. At the January meeting we will hold an auction of a large selection of books. This should be fun as well as raise a little money for the society. All books that are not sold that day at auction will be donated to various libraries in the area that have shown an interest in adding them to their collections. The list of speakers for 2013 is almost full and we have some great guests that will be coming to share with us. Look forward to a listing in the January newsletter. Floyd K. Telling ourStoriesEditor's note: This is the last ofthe series featuring the Olive TreeGenealogy Blog by Lorine McGinnis Shultz . Please continueto work on your own stories.

You may not think you have stories to tell; not only do youhave some, the people around you have memories to share aswell.

Lorine's memories for this month:"The prompt for this week is your first house. I

don't mean the first house you remember as a child.I'm talking about the first house you bought as anadult. Do you remember it? Describe it. Tell yourdescendants what it was like. I find myselffascinated by the 1911 census for the UK (England)which provides number of rooms in the house andspecifies what to include or exclude. The houses ingeneral were so small compared to ours, and ofcourse we don't generally have a summer kitchenand other rooms that were commonplace in 1911.

If you remember what your first house cost andthe year you bought it, talk about that too. Maybeyour moving experience is something you can shareon paper.

My very first house was purchased circa 1970when my ex-husband and I left the city (Toronto) to

Page 3: Established 1982 YUCAIPA VALLEY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY ...ancestors in your tree, generation upon generation, have come down to this moment in time—to give birth to you. There has

move north. There were two houses for sale in theentire town! So it wasn't like we were buying ourdream home. We simply chose the only one thatwas a detached home. The other one for sale was asemi-detached on a main street..."Editor's note: What was your firstChristmas in your first house like? Didyou make your own decorations as wedid? A friend brought us a little treefrom his family's farm, and my husbandmade origami birds that we hung from the end of thebranches with string, and I used dried safflowers(they are red) on the branches to fill it in. We hadone silver ornament--a star--and it was tied to thetop of the tree. We were in college and couldn'tafford any other decorations...That is still my favoritetree. I wish I could duplicate it.

Thank you Sandy Makovsky and JuanitaMarshall for the wonderful goodies at theNovember meeting.

I hope to see everyone at the Christmas Potluckat the library. Please bring a dish to share.

Sue Wolfe, Hospitality

“Over the course of the millennia, all theseancestors in your tree, generation upon generation, have come down to this moment in time—to givebirth to you. There has never been, nor will ever be,another like you. You have been given a tremendousresponsibility. You carry the hopes and dreams of allthose who have gone before. Hopes and dreams fora better world. What will you do with your time onthis Earth? How will you contribute to the ongoingstory of humankind?”

A Checklist of 150 GenealogicalSources by William DollarhideFiled in Church Records, Dollarhide Columns,Newspaper Research, School Records, U.S. Census,Vital Records on Nov.26, 2012

That first pedigree chart usually shows up to fourgenerations, sometimes more, but if a 4-generationchart starts with yourself, there are up to fourteendirect ancestors presented. How many documentshave you collected for each of those fourteenpersons? How many have of you collected foryourself? How much of the information is still inyour head and never written down?

For each ancestor on your pedigree chart, it ispossible to have at least 150 documents that mentionone person. By adding the first person on the chart, that means it is possible to have 2,250 differentdocuments for one 4-generation pedigree chart. Howcould that be possible? It is possible because we livein a society that keeps records of everything we dofrom birth to death, and a myriad of events inbetween. Here are some things you can do to fill outwhat you know about yourself, your parents, yourgrandparents, and your great-grandparents. This listis where you may find dates, places, andgenealogical events of a person’s life. Now is thetime to honor your parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents — by locating every piece of evidenceof their lives and saving it as a written record of theirpersonal history.

There will be many readers who will havediscovered a document not on this list – please senda comment so others can learn. This list of sourcesgets smaller as we go back further in time. Assumethat it is possible to find all of the 150 documentsmentioning any ancestor born since 1930 or so. Hereis the checklist:

Genealogy Tip of the Day--In One Place OnlyThere are still records that exist only in their

original form. They have not been transcribed. Theyhave not been microfilmed. They have not beendigitized.

Local records frequently fall into this category ofbeing available "only in the original location," butthere are others as well. While it is realized that noteveryone can travel to remote places to performresearch, at least be aware that there may be morematerial out there.

When Santa Claus Comes

A good time is coming, I wish it were here,

The very best time in the whole of the year;

I'm counting each day on my fingers and thumbs --

the weeks that must pass before Santa Claus comes.

Then when the first snowflakes begin to come down,

And the wind whistles sharp and the branches are brown,

I'll not mind the cold, though my fingers it numbs,

For it brings the time nearer when Santa Claus comes.
