Relief, rehabilitation and long-term

disaster preparedness tasks are being carried

out in storm-hit regions by the people, social

organizations and departments with the

contributions of local and international

organizations under the leadership of the

government.

In that regard, priority is being given to

fulfilment of the food, clothing and shelter needs

of storm victims and health care services. In the

meantime, the Government, the people and the

Tatmadaw are fully engaged in reconstruction

of the victims’ houses and regenerating their

livelihoods.

As the second and third phase

rehabilitation tasks could take time it calls for

technology and assistance of the international

community. A co-ordination machinery led by

ASEAN is to be formed so as to ensure

international assistance and cooperation in

rehabilitation of the victims.

Furthermore, a ASEAN-UN conference

to pledge the volume of relief supplies donated

by international donors will be held on 25 May in

Myanmar. This will contribute a lot to the relief

and rehabilitation tasks. The contributions of

the State, local and international donors have

been the new strengths of storm victims and with

this they will be able to overcome difficulties

encountered.

As the State, the people and the Tatmadaw

are engaged in rehabilitation tasks in concert we

firmly believe that the drive for rehabilitation of

the storm victims will be materialized soonest.

Bootleg liquor kills 150in southern India

BANGALORE (India), 23 May—At least 150 peoplehave died in southern India after drinking bootlegliquor laced with chemicals, and another 88 areseriously ill, police said on Wednesday.

Police said mostly labourers in the southern statesof Karnataka and Tamil Nadu bought the liquor, soldin plastic pouches from illegal shops, at the weekendand immediately fell sick. Olmert proposes navalblockade on Iran

JERUSALEM, 23 May—Israeli Prime Minister EhudOlmert proposed in talks with a US congressionalleader that a naval blockade be imposed on Iran to tryto curb its nuclear programme, an Israeli newspaperreported on Wednesday.

The Haaretz daily quoted Olmert as telling NancyPelosi that “the present economic sanctions haveexhausted themselves” and the internationalcommunity needed to take more drastic steps to stopIran’s efforts to obtain nuclear weapons.

Vietnam faces shortage of finance,healthcare in manpower

HANOI, 22 May—Vietnam’s financial andbanking, healthcare andshipbuilding industries arenow in need of qualifiedemployees, local news-paper Vietnam EconomicTimes reported Wednes-day.

Banks in Vietnamannually need 15,000university graduates, buteducational and traininginstitutions can churn outonly 11,000 each year.

According to theestimation of Vietnam’sEducation and Training,

the country’s shipbuildingindustry needs 10,000-15,000 new staff each yearin the 2008-2015 period,but 40-60 per cent of themanpower demand can bemet. Now, over 5,700 localstudents study ship-building at six universitiesand colleges.

Vietnam, targeting tohave 1.5 druggists per10,000 residents by 2010,currently has only 0.2druggists per 10,000people, according to thecountry’s Health Ministry.

reached Wednesday an agreement on resolving thepolitical crisis, NBN TV quoted the oppositionParliament member (MP) Ali Hasan Khalil as saying.

The agreement calls for electing a presidentimmediately, forming a government based on a 16-11-3 formula (16 for the majority, 11 for the oppositionand 3 to be chosen by the president)and adopting 1960electoral law, said the report.

“We except the presidential elections on Thursday orFriday,” Khalil, the political assistant of LebaneseParliament Speaker Nabih Berri, was quoted as saying.

“The official announcement of the agreement willtake place at 10 am (0700 GMT) Wednesday” in theQatari capital city of Doha, where the rival leadershave been negotiating since Saturday aiming at solvingthe long ongoing political crisis in the country, whichturned violent between pro-government and oppositionsupporters about two weeks ago.

Singapore sets upinter-agency taskforce

SINGAPORE, 22 May —Singapore’s Deputy PrimeMinister S. Jayakumar said Wednesday thegovernment will set up an inter-agency taskforce tohelp businesses strengthen their corporate resilienceto overcome crisis.

The taskforce will be led by the Ministry ofTrade and Industry, and involves other key agencies,such as the Ministry of Home Affairs as well as theFinance Ministry.

“A strong and resilient corporate sector is critical,especially for a business and financial hub likeSingapore,” Jayakumar said at the National SecurityDialogue with the business community.

He said, “A terrorist attack, disease pandemic, ora natural disaster can cause huge disruptions infinancial services, our information communications,tourism and other sectors of the economy.”

The taskforce will formulate implementationstrategies to encourage more companies to adopt theexisting national standard, aimed at helping businessesidentify contingencies and develop appropriateresponse plans.

Singapore developed the Technical Reference19 Business Continuity Management Standard (TR19)in 2005. It was initiated by the Singapore BusinessFederation and supported by several governmentagencies.

About 100 companies in Singapore to date haveexpressed interest in TR19.

Out of 2,830 factories in industrial zones inYangon, 550 were damaged by the storm on 2 and 3May. Thanks to the cooperative efforts of owners ofthe factories, workers and employees of the ministries,2,757 factories can run at full capacity to date. frontier post Malko Tarnovo between Bulgaria andTurkey confiscated over 93 kilogrammes of heroinMonday night, local Press reported Tuesday.

The narcotic drug has been discovered after theselection of a vehicle arriving from Turkey by usingthe “risk analysis” method, announced the Press-centreof the Regional Customs Agency in the Black Sea portof Burgas.

The heroin packages were discovered in a specialhiding place in the car's ceiling. The vehicle hadBulgarian registration plates.
