PERSPECTIVESMonday, 19 September, 2011
Boost production, maintainquality
Every global nation has put a specialfocus on socio-economic development. We needto keep abreast of other world countries. It ishigh time to strive for modernization of thenation.
Projects of respective sectors have pickedup the pace all over the nation. Development ofthe nation is founded on smooth roadtransportation. Swift transportation willcontribute towards increase in commoditytrade, thus ensuring economic development.
Education, health and living standardswill continue to develop, following economicslump. For instance, nine bridges, constructedover Ayeyawady River, are accelerating thecommodity flow. Five more Ayeyawady River-spanning bridges are under construction. Uponcompletion, they will bring about furtherdevelopment.
In bridging rivers, the quality is to bemonitored with care as the projects are huge. The quality of resistance to natural disasterssuch as earthquakes needs guarantee when thebridges are completed.
Other economic sectors are to bedeveloped in industrializing the nation. As thecountry is practicing market economy, increasing domestic production and localmarket are not enough. It is needed to succeedin penetrating both local and global markets.
Quality, rather than quantity, is to becared in producing goods targeted for foreignmarkets. From production and projectimplementation to nation-building tasks, personnel concerned are to work heart andsoul to deliver good quality.

New spaghetti a source of fiberBOLOGNA, 18 Sept—
A new pasta made withbarley may soon belabeled a “good sourceof dietary fiber” and“may reduce the heartdisease risk,” researc-hers in Italy and Spainsay.
Vito Verardo of theUniversity of Bologna inItaly, Ana Maria Gomez-Caravaca of theUniversity of Granada inSpain and colleaguesexplain that barley, a
grain that is an excellentsource of fiber andantioxidants, is gaininginterest as an ingredientin so-called “functionalfoods” — a genre offoods that are supple-mented with healthfuladditives.
To determine whe-ther barley could make anew functional spaghettiby providing fiber andantioxidants, the researc-hers developed a barleyflour, that contains the
most nutritious part ofthe grain and used it tomake pasta.
The researchers findthat the barley spaghettihas more fiber and moreantioxidant activity thantraditional semolina-based spaghetti. Addinggluten to barley flourimproves the cookingquality of the pasta, theysay, but lowers itsantioxidant activity.

TV hurts parent-childcommunication
COLUMBUS, 18 Sept—Reading books increasesmaternal communication beyond a level requiredfor reading, while watching TV decreases maternalcommunication, US researchers found.
Amy Nathanson and Eric Rasmussen from OhioState University studied maternal responsivenessand mother-child interactions of 73 mother-childpairs as they read together, played with toys togetherand watched TV together.
In the study, the average mother was married, intheir early 30s, had a bachelor’s degree and halfwere not employed. The children were ages 16months to 6 years.
The pairs were randomly assigned to one of thethree activities for 10 minutes. A researcher thenoffered the pair all three activities and left them fora further 20 minutes.
The study, published in Human CommunicationResearch, found when reading a book with theirchildren mothers used a more active communicationstyle, bringing the child into contact with wordsthey may not hear in everyday speech, therebyimproving their vocabulary and grammaticalknowledge, while watching TV resulted insignificantly fewer descriptions and positiveresponses than mothers playing with toys.

Laser can detect roadside explosivesEAST LANSING, 18 Sept
—Researchers at Michi-gan State University saythey’ve devised a laserthat can detect roadsidebombs, the biggest threatto US troops in Iraq andAfghanistan.
The laser, with aboutthe same output as asimple presentationpointer, has the sensitivityand selectivity to scanlarge areas and detectimprovised explosivedevices that account foraround 60 percent ofcoalition soldiers’ deaths,
a university release saidFriday.
The laser, developedby chemistry ProfessorMarcos Dantus and MSUcolleagues, combinesshort pulses that causemolecules in theexplosives to vibrate, aswell as long pulses thatare used to “listen” andidentify the differentvibrations.
Every kind ofmolecule has differentvibrational frequenciesthat uniquely identify thesubstance, much like a

“The laser and themethod we’ve deve-loped were originallyintended for micro-scopes, but we were ableto adapt and broaden itsuse to demonstrate itseffectiveness for standoffdetection of explosives,”Dantus said.

BOSTON, 18 Sept—Despite impressive chan-ges to airport security inthe decade since the 11September attacks, gapsremain in securing thenation’s airports, keepingpassengers safe andinvestigating breaches, lawmakers said on Friday.
Ensuring that small orrural airports with limitedfunding have robustsecurity measures wasone concern that wascritical to passenger safetynationwide, said Congre-ssman William Keating, aDemocrat from Massa-chusetts. “We’re only asgood as our weakestlink,” he said during
comments at a US Houseof Representatives Home-land Security subcomm-ittee meeting at Boston’sLogan International

Thriving Myanmar valuable teak plants through plant thinning (2)By Maung Maung (Kyauktan)
In a nature of trees, ifteak plants grow verydensely in the forest, theplants will slow down ingrowth due to deficiencyof fertilizer and light. Ifspaces between plantsare wider, the plants willhave many branches thatdecline value of thewood.
Plant thinning mustbe done at the plantationsregularly. Thinning thelarger number of plantsat young status is betterthan thinning the smallernumber of plants atmature status. If there arewider vacant areas, it canbe assumed that plantthinning will be larger. Inoticed that plantthinning is to be carriedout with the aim ofremaining the straight andbest plants after the lastthinning.
Although teak is tobe thinned out at its five
years old, Phyo Sithuprivate teak plant could becarried out with plantthinning for four years oldplants. General ManagerU Kyaw Soe of theplantation heartily ex-plained thriving of the teakplants.
“Our company com-menced growing of teak
plants on 12 November2006. We have grownteaks on 7200 acres ofland of 9700 permittedacres in Paukkhaung,Kyangin and Kyaukdagatownships. The land forteak plantations wereallowed at the low-gradeareas. In accord with theinstruction of officialsconcerned, we nurturedthe plants and securedachievements in growingteak plants. So far, we havewon private plantationestablishment prizesawarded by FAO twotimes.”
While undertakingenvironmental conser-vation, Phyo Sithu Com-pany is creating jobopportunities for the ruralpeople. Thus, the com-pany takes pride in itswork of alleviatingpoverty of the rural peoplewhile engaging in theforestry business.
If plant thinning iscarried out at the four-year old teak plantation, domestic used poles oftrees can be extracted. Thelogs from plant thinningare being innovatedthrough technologies toproduce marketableproducts to be exportedto the foreign market.
“In the future task,we focus on conservationof 1890 acres of Yenwewatershed area as anatural forest with the aimof ensuring long-termexistence of Yenwe Damnear Yenwe forest reserve
where Kyaukdaga teakplantation of the companylies. We also carry outconservation of naturalforests in Paukkhaungplantation area,”explained the generalmanager.
On my trip, Iwitnessed endeavours ofPhyo Sithu Company ingenerating jobs for localpeople in Paukkhaung,
Kyangin and Kyaukdagatown-ships, allowing thelocal people to growcotton, sesame, beans, maize and paddy amongteak plantations of thecompany, free trade, andproviding assistance forworkers and local peoplein social, health andeducation tasks.
The company hasdonated a suctionmachine, anti-venom and
anti-malaria medicines tothe hospitals in the region. As Kyangin teak
plantation was locatedin the poor transportarea, roads and bridgeswere upgraded andbuilt, so the local peoplecan convenientlytransport their productsand crops to the market, according to DeputyManager U Aung Minof Kyangin teakplantation.
I was very delightedwith thriving teak
plantations that will earnincreased foreignexchange and contributeto prevention of climatechanges. Establishingtree plantations isdesigned to conserve theclimate and environ-ment. Moreover, theforest plantations createhabitats for wildlife. Onmy return, I wasthoughtful for growingvaluable teak and teakplantations throughplant thinning.

LONDON, 18 Sept — Multidrug-resistant and ex-tensively drug-resistant forms of tuberculosis (TB)are spreading at an alarming rate in Europe andwill kill thousands unless health authorities haltthe pandemic, the World Health Organization(WHO) has warned.
Launching a new regional plan to find, diagnoseand treat cases of the airborne infectious diseasemore effectively, the WHO’s European director
warned that complacency had allowed a resurgenceof TB — and failure to tackle it now would meanhuge human and economic costs in the future.
“TB is an old disease that never went away, andnow it is evolving with a vengeance,” said ZsuzsannaJakab, the WHO’s Regional Director for Europe.
“The numbers are scary,” Lucica Ditiu, executivesecretary of the Stop TB Partnership told a newsconference in London. “This is a very dramaticsituation.” TB is currently a worldwide pandemicthat kills around 1.7 million people a year.
The infection is caused by the bacterium my-cobacterium tuberculosis and destroys patients’lung tissue, causing them to cough up the bacteria, which then spreads through the air and can beinhaled by others.

115 US children, teens diedfrom flu last season: CDC
NEW YORK , 18 Sept —Some 115 US children andteens died from influenzalast flu season, and manyof those deaths were ofchildren who had notgotten an annual flu shot,US health officials said onThursday. The US Centersfor Disease Control andPrevention recommendsflu shots for children asyoung as six months old,yet less than a quarter ofthe 74 children over agesix months who diedbetween September 2010and August 2011 had beenvaccinated.
“It’s vital that childrenget vaccinated,” Dr LynFinelli, chief of the CDC’sSurveillance and Out-break Response Team, said in a statement. TheCDC said parents oftenmistakenly think healthychildren can survive about of the flu, but that is
not always so.Among thedeaths detailed in theCDC’s Morbidity andMortality Weekly Report, released on Thursday, theteam found about half ofthe children had no priormedical condition thatwould put them at in-creased risk of flu compli-cations.—Internet
Exercise can curb hunger, new research finds
After a big workout, it’s tempting to rewardyourself with a sinful treat. But research showsthat we grossly overestimate our calorie burn,
which can stymie weight-loss efforts. — INTERNET
AMHERST, 18 Sept —Maybe you’ve heard therecent downer reports thatexercise won’t make usthin because it makes ushungry, particularly forjunk food. Or could be,you’ve noticed firsthandthat you eat a lot more ongym days than on daysoff. Either way, it raises
the question: If workingoutonly sets us up to blowour diet, what’s the point?
For starters, some re-search suggests exercisedoesn’t always cause hun-ger but can curb it. “Exer-cise may lower levels ofghrelin, a hormone thatstimulates appetite in theshort term, while raising
levels of peptide YY, ahormone that suppressesappetite,” says study au-thor David Stensel, PhD,reader in exercise metabo-lism at LoughboroughUniversity.
That’s only if theworkout is intense (if youcan chat, forget it), but themore intense it is, thelonger the benefit seemsto last. “It may be thatyour body needs to circu-late more blood to preventoverheating,” Stensel ex-plains. Because eatingwould cause blood to flowto the stomach instead toaid digestion, your bodydampens your appetite toprevent that.
Like all good things, this satiating effect ends—about an hour later, whenyour body starts to cravethe energy it used up.

Artificial blood vessels could help those inurgent need of an organ transplant.
Artificial blood vessels created on a 3D printerSTUTTGART, 18 Sept —
Artificial blood vesselsmade on a 3D printer maysoon be used for trans-plants of lab-created or-gans. Until now, the stum-bling block in tissue engi-neering has been supply-ing artificial tissue withnutrients that have to ar-rive via capillary vessels.A team at the FraunhoferInstitute in Germany hassolved that problem using3D printing and a tech-nique called multiphotonpolymerisation.
The findings will be
shown at the BiotechnicaFair in Germany in Octo-ber. Out of thousands ofpatients in desperate needof an organ transplantthere are inevitably somewho do not get it in time.In Germany, for instance, more than 11,000 peoplehave been put on an organtransplant waiting list in2011 alone.
To make sure morepatients receive these life-saving surgeries, re-searchers in tissueengineering all over theglobe have been working
on creating artificial tissueand even entire organs inthe lab.
But for a lab-madeorgan to function, it needsto be equipped with artifi-cial blood vessels - tinyand extremely complextubes that our organs natu-rally possess, used to carrynutrients.
Numerous attemptshave been made to createsynthetic capillaries, andthe latest one by the Ger-man team seems to beespecially promising.

Hollywood balks at big budgetmovies as DVDs drop
LOS ANGELES, 18Sept—Hollywood —long considered the landof excess— is becomingmore cost-conscious, asmovie executivesrethink what they’rewilling to pay to make ablockbuster.
After years ofbeefing up budgets tomeet audienceexpectations, moviestudios are cutting backand canceling projectsthat are too costly. Half-baked, expensive movieideas that would havereceived approval a fewyears ago are now underscrutiny. For movies thatare made, producershave to settle for toned-down special effects, cheaper actors and fewerlocations for shoots.
In the past five years, major studios havetrimmed the annualnumber of films theyrelease by nearly a thirdto cut costs and avoidhaving big moviescompete head-to-head
