Question 17 Amelia is preparing a pizza on an aluminum baking pan. She places the pizza in the oven. Ten minutes later she realizes that she forgot to add the cheese. She must take the pizza out of the oven to add the cheese.

The baking pan, which weighs 375 grams, was at room temperature (22C) before it was placed in the oven. It absorbed 9450 J of energy during the 10 minutes it was in the oven. The specific heat capacity of aluminum is 0.90 J/g°C.

What is the temperature of the baking pan when it is removed from the oven?

Question 18 Scientists often breed Guinea pigs to study genetic characteristics. In one experiment, they crossed a homozygous dominant black haired male with a homozygous recessive white haired female. They observed that all of the offspring were heterozygous black haired.

Characteristic of Guinea Pigs

Trait / Characteristic Dominant Allele Recessive Allele

Colour of hair Black (B) White (b)

The scientists then do a second cross between a homozygous dominant black haired male and a heterozygous black haired female.

a) State the genotype for both individuals in the second cross and draw the Punnett square that shows the offspring produced from this cross.

b) Give the phenotypic ratio of the offspring produced from the cross in

question a).

Question 19 The world population has now reached 7 billion people. This has led to a greater demand for food. Agriculture must find ways to increase food production. Several farmers have started using new fertilizers that cause plants to grow faster, resulting in larger harvests. The new fertilizers contain elements such as nitrogen, potassium and phosphorous. These fertilizers have a positive effect on the plant crops; however they also have an impact on the surrounding environment. A corn crop fertilized with the new fertilizer is situated near several streams which flow into a lake.

Describe two consequences of the widespread use of the new fertilizer on this lake ecosystem.

Question 20

Operation Sweep-Up at l’Érablière High School!

On October 5th, 1 100 students at l’Érablière High School participated in Operation

Sweep Up. The purpose of the activity was to clean up the schoolyard as well as the

surrounding neighborhood. Inspired by a new environmental awareness program called

SSBR (small steps, big results), the students went through the neighborhood with a fine-

toothed comb, picking up every piece of garbage in sight. An enormous amount of waste

was collected! The students also pledged to keep the neighborhood clean by picking up

two pieces of garbage every day until the end of the school year. The school’s

administration stated that in taking on this project, the students at l’Érablière High,

once some of the biggest polluters in the neighborhood, are becoming ambassadors for a

clean community! Article by Simon Gagné, in the daily newspaper La Revue de Gatineau on October 17, 2011. [Free translation]

This initiative has reduced the ecological footprint of the school.

Name four concrete actions that could reduce the ecological footprint of a community. Explain how each of these actions would reduce the ecological footprint.
