Further Education and skills provision is broken into the following types of learning:

Education and training covering further education learning delivered mainly in a classroom, workshop or through distance or e-learning. Provision delivered through School Sixth Forms is not included in these figures;

Apprenticeships which are paid jobs that incorporate on- and off-the-job training leading to nationally recognised qualifications;

Workplace learning which covers a broad range of training including basic skills, Level 2, Level 3 and higher-level skills. This training is mainly delivered in the workplace (but excludes Apprenticeships).

Participation in Higher Education

Analysis published by the Higher Education Funding Council for England shows the proportion of young people

who participate in Higher Education. This is based on the combined participation rates of those aged 18 between

2005 and 2009 who entered HE between 2005-06 and 2010-11 academic years. Further information can be found

The following chart shows whether the level of young participation in higher education in different areas is higher

or lower than expected, based on factors known to have a bearing on participation. The analysis is based on 5

cohorts of young people, who were aged 18 between 2006-07 and 2010-11 academic years. The participation gap

is expressed as a percentage point difference from the expected young participation level. For example if the

young participation rate is 30 per cent and it was expected to be 40 per cent, then the participation gap is
