WEB HOSTING SERVICE

The Essex NGN School Web Hosting service offers a cost effective and secure platform on which Essex schools can host their individual web sites. The service comprises a virtualised publishing server, located centrally within the Essex NGN core network. Web site content is backed up dynamically to an online storage system in order to protect customer’s web site content in the event of a server failure.

The service offers School ICT Managers/Web developers the flexibility to manage their own website content, supporting a variety of standard web design applications and data transfer protocols.

The table below highlights some of the key features provided by the Essex NGN Web Hosting service, together with the standard applications supported.

‘Web hosting’ refers to an Internet based service that provides individuals and/or organisations with a secure area of data storage on which to locate their web site content and publish it to the World Wide Web.

Web Hosting services are typically offered by Internet Service Providers (ISP) that lease storage space on managed server infrastructure located within their own ISP network environment.

TRANSPARENT PROXY WEB FILTERING SERVICE

A typical deployment scenario, for a Transparent Proxy service, would be in a Guest/BYOD network where the hosting organisation has no control over the configuration of connected client devices. Users of a Guest/BYOD network are able to gain access to a safe, filtered Internet connection using their own personal device such as a laptop, tablet or smart phone, without the need to manually configure proxy settings.

WHY DO YOU NEED THIS SERVICE?

Interested in these services? In the first instance, please ask your Schools IT representative to contact Schools Broadband Manager at Essex County Council who will be able to provide greater details about these two services and any specific information that relates to your School: (schoolsbroadband [email protected])

‘Transparent Proxy’ refers to the process of filtering outbound web traffic, whilst avoiding the requirement to configure proxy settings on a client device. A Transparent Proxy is placed ‘in line’ on the physical connection path, between client devices and the public Internet, where it inspects web based traffic (HTTP/HTTPS etc.) and permits/denies the connection according to pre-defined policy.
