“The most valuable aspect of my experience at Essex BusinessSchool was the up-to-date course content and the involvement ofstudents in self-research. My favourite modules are Theories and

As a result, I gained very valuableknowledge that helps me in managing my own business, an onlineshop of men’s, women’s and children’s apparel.

Essex Business School gave me a good level of knowledge thatcan be applied in the practical world. All the lecturers worked hardto share their experience and knowledge with us. I was alsoelected Course Representative, and it was very challenging torepresent students’ rights and to organise activities for studentson my course.

“My main reasons to choose MSc International Management werethe location of the University, the course content and the flexibleentry requirements. My favourite aspect of the course was that ithad a good combination of theory and practical examples, makingthe theory easier to understand and helping us to develop our owninterpretation.

My academic writings skills have hugely improved, which will bevery useful to me. The Masters encouraged us to think in a critical

way, which enables us to make connections between things thatseemed unrelated. This course has also opened my eyes to newpossibilities and potential career opportunities.

I also greatly value the cultural diversity at Essex Business School. We have students from more than ten countries around the worldin any single classroom. Carmen González Gutiérrez, MSc Marketing and BrandManagement, Madrid, Spain

“The most valuable experience I will take with me from my time atEssex Business School is the critical perspective to business thatthis course has shown me. In my undergraduate studies, mostmodules were not able to provide any critical views on the topicsexplored and instead stuck to the textbooks. This Mastersprogramme has opened completely new approaches, and hasmade me realise that what I had been taught before was just thetip of the iceberg.

MSc Marketing and Brand Management has increased mybusiness awareness. I now see more clearly the mechanisms of

the market and its logic, as well as the risks that today’s consumerpractices imply for the environment and for the countries of theGlobal South. Moreover, I now have a more complete perspectiveof the functioning of organisations.

When I arrived at the University of Essex in September, I wanted tofinish my Masters degree quickly and find a job. Now, my aim is todo a PhD and work in academia. I am delighted to have recentlybeen awarded an EBS Doctorial Scholarship. I see it as ameaningful and fulfilling career that will allow me to givesomething back to society. In any case, my experience at EssexBusiness School will be very useful background for any futurecareer.”

University of Essex professor speaks at G8 A call for major reform of the international tax system was made by Professor PremSikka from Essex Business School when he spoke at the 2013 G8 Pre-summitConference in Belfast in June 2013. Professor Sikka argues the G8 needs to halt largecorporations shifting profits to low tax jurisdiction to avoid paying higher taxes in thecountries where the profit was actually generated. Professor Sikka says “The loss of taxrevenues is a major reason for the economic turmoil. The current corporate tax system isthe outcome of treaties from over a century ago. Since then the world has changed agreat deal and corporations have become more mobile and powerful. So a variety of newdevelopments are needed.”

Zlatinka Gougoumanova, PhD Accounting,Plovdiv, Bulgaria

I chose Essex Business School because I knew that a PhD fromthe School will be internationally recognised. The faculty membersare very supportive of PhD students’ research, and we arewelcome to take elective modules from other departments. We arealso free to attend the Essex Summer School, which is theEuropean leader in quantitative and qualitative research methodsin social science.

One of the most valuable experiences I have had so far during mycourse at EBS has been my PhD fieldwork. I have been fortunateto travel to more than twenty health care entities throughoutEngland and interviewed their senior management. Another aspectof EBS that I value is the fact that the faculty encourages PhDstudents to submit papers to national and international

conferences. One does not need to have completed his or herfieldwork to have a paper accepted at such conferences. I stronglyrecommend submitting a paper even if your research is based onjust several interviews. At these conferences and doctoralcolloquiums, I was able to hear presentations from leaders in myfield and even met the people who will be the external examinersduring my Viva.
