24 Hours of RealityWe are at an important moment in the climate movement. As the first truly global accord, the Paris Agreement
was monumental. And yet with it came numerous questions about how each nation – and each of us individually– can create the continued change that is required. The inflection point at hand is about the transition from debate
and denial, to action and sustainable growth for all.
On August 1, ASBC President and Co-founder David Levine spoke in a live video stream to highlight EarthOvershoot Day 2018, the annual date when more of earth’s resources have been depleted than can be renewedin
one year. Earth Overshoot Day organizer Global Footprint notes that the day moved past December 31 in theearly 1970s and has moved continuously earlier since then.
Speaking in the apt location of Times Square, Levine said that, as businesses have had a large part in thedepletion of earth’s resources, they can take a big role in addressing it. "Businesses can take the lead, in a
complete makeover of the practices within their business,"
Levine said. "They can also speak out in public to help drive policy change at the local, state, national andinternational levels." Levine said, "We’re asking all businesses to take action now: Address the issues that we’re
exposing with Earth Overshoot. That’s where the future lies – in the opportunity to make a difference."

Join us in making 2018 the year we tell the world America is stepping up its climateefforts because we are still in and committed to
America's Pledge on climate. ASBC has just launched a new platform for US businesses, states, tribes, universities, faith groups and cultural
institutions to commit to new climate actions, enhance existing actions, connect with the most up-to-date resourcesand showcase their existing climate efforts.
Take a look at the new “US Climate Action Contribution Platform.” Get started by creating an account using theemail address on file. The portal will walk you through the process step by step and takes less than a minute to getstarted.
Your leadership has ensured that America’s emissions continued to decline in 2017, even with federal policiescurtailing progress. But, America needs new commitments and scaled up climate action if we are going to deliver
on America’s Pledge.
Ahead of the premier climate event in 2018, the Global Climate Action Summit (September 12-14, San Francisco,California), the signatories to We Are Still In have an opportunity to accelerate progress towards the US climate
targets under the Paris Agreement by submitting a 'contribution' through the portal. This toolkit gives youeverything you need to know about this platform and provides resources to share your climate commitments across
your channels.
Federal Carbon Pricing Bills Are Considered: Both Pro and Con
Last week, the House of Representative voted on H. Con. Res.119, a non-binding resolution denouncing carbonpricing, calling it "detrimental" to the U.S. economy. Unfortunately, it passed, 229-180. This vote revealed
additional insights into the Climate Solutions Caucus, a bipartisan group of 86 legislators committed to exploringpolicy options to address climate change. As expected, all but one Democratic caucus member voted against theanti-carbon pricing resolution. Yet of the 43 Republican members of the caucus, only 4 voted against it: Reps.
Carlos Curbelo (FL-26), Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (FL-27), Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-8), and Mia Love (UT-4).
The timing of this resolution vote is interesting because Rep. Curbelo released his long-anticipated carbon pricinglegislation this week. The MARKET CHOICE Act (H.R. 6463) would eliminate the gas tax and implement aninitial $24/ton fee on carbon. Seventy percent of the revenue would go into the Highway Trust Fund to pay for
infrastructure improvements, while the remaining revenues would be used to help low-income families, displaced
workers, and coastal communities severely damaged by flooding. The proposed act also would provide amoratorium on the development and enforcement of federal Clean Air Act regulations that would continue if
emissions reductions targets are met.
While we do not agree with everything in Rep. Curbelo's legislation, it is encouraging that a Republican is puttingspecific ideas on the table. We look forward to working with Rep. Curbelo and others to further develop carbonpricing legislation. To join ASBC in this work, please sign on to our growing coalition of business leaders who
support a carbon price.
