ICON IN CIRCLE

We may be used to post-race donuts all over, from F1 to NASCAR, but they weren’t always the default celebration for racing drivers. Alex Zanardi is in fact credited with making donuts a com-mon gesture during his CART days. It all started with the 1997 Long Beach Grand Prix following an incredible win by the Italian raising star. The celebra-tion was so popular that he performed it again after his second win of the 1997 season and many more times in his ca-reer. Our Icon and Circle tee is our own interpretation of the donut celebration!

Carbon fiber was first introduced in F1 In 1981when McLaren revolutionized the costruction of racing cars with the creation of the first carbon fiber mono-coque. When the MP4/1 rolled out of the garage on March 5th, 1981 it excit-ed curiosity. In the hands of John Wat-son it took a first victory at the 1981 British Grand Prix. More significantly, it enabled the Ulsterman to walk away unscathed from a high-speed crash at Monza later in the year; carbon fi-ber became and still is the material of choice across the world of motorsport. This tee wants to celebrate the best composite technology in racing, wear yours proudly!

Stripes, stripes and stripes… motor-sport is a rainbow of stripes, many of them legendary. Who doesn’t remem-ber at least a dozen of them? We came up with our own iconic lines making this tee a versatile tee for everyday use, but always with the clear identity of who we are. SIMPLICITY

Brooklands opened in 1907 and was the world’s first purpose-built racetrack. It was a 2.75-mile (4.43 Km) circuit near Weybridge in Surrey, England and com-petition continued thorough 1939 until it closed. Built in 1909 the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was the second racetrack built, and with an estimated 400,000 attendee capability it is the highest capacity sports venue in the world. The track is a 2.5-mile (4.0 Km) rectangular oval that remains essentially unchanged since its construction. The Autodromo Nazionale Monza in Monza, Italy, was built in 1922 and is the world’s third purpose built racetrack. Located in the heart of the Royal Villa of Monza, the circuit has hosted, except for 1980, all Formula One Italian Grand Prix. These are the tracks where Racing Spirit all began!

BOYLE SPECIAL

In 1938 U.S. motorsport personality Wilbur Shaw pointed at one of the Maserati racing at Roosevelt Raceway in NY and told team owner Michael Boyle: “If I had a car like that, I’d win the next 500 mile race”. That was a proposition Boyle could not turn down. The 1938 Maserati 8C.T.F. serial number 3032, known as the Boyle Special became the most successful automobile to compete at the Indianapolis 500® mile race, having won twice in 1939 and 1940, finished third twice and fourth once. To this day the Boyle Special remains unchallenged in its place as themost accomplished single automobile to ever race at the Speedway.

WALK SLOW

It’s Sunday June 14, 1969 and approximately 400,000 people are spectating at the start of the 37th Le Mans 24 hours race. Drivers are set off running so they can jump into their cars as quickly as possible in order to get underway as fast as they could. Everyone is rushing except for a Belgian named Jacky Ickx who walks over to his Ford GT40. This is his protest to this type of start, as drivers begin racing without properly putting on their helmets or safety belts in order to gain a few seconds. Once he got in his car, Ickx put on his helmet, securely fastened his safety belt and started the race last. Jacky Ickx ultimately won the race and his protest did not go unnoticed and the rules were changed for 1970 so that all drivers started the race sitting in their cars with all the needed safety equipment in place. The slow walk of Ickx brought an end to the “Le Mans Start” and the risks as-sociated with it.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS

It’s one of those facts, or you could say it’s “racing trivia”, that surprise even historians when they learn about it. Few are aware of it; but the first racing competition at the In-dianapolis Motor Speedway was a motorcycle race. It was August 14, 1909, and racing at the Speedway was the pinnacle event of a week of motorcycle-themed celebration with motorcyclists such as Walter Davidson and Erwin “Cannon Ball” Baker. For this final race the Kokomo Rubber Company donated a trophy, but it was never awarded because the event at the Speedway was canceled due to rain. The artifact still exists and is owned by a private collector who, one day, would like to go full circle and pay tribute to those racing pioneers.

WHATEVER LOLA WANTS

Many consider Eric Broadley, founder and leader of Lola Cars, a motorsport visionary thanks to the engineering and manufacturing work done since the motorsport pioneering days. Lola built models ranging from sport cars to formula cars, including Formula One, considered by many the pinnacle of motor racing. The origins of the Lola name is a curiosity as it’s widely believed that it was taken from a fan favorite musical “Da mned Yankees”, which included the popular “Whatever Lola wants” song. Eric Broadley never confirmed or denied it; leaving a mystery around the name origin of this iconic racing manufacturer and engineering company.
