How to Successfully Utilize and Complete this Online Course

Just like Wind and Water, the Essential Feng Shui® Basics @ Home sections and this Workbook are synergistic partners. They each support the other in providing you with a holistic educational experience. Each section of the Basics @ Home Training will ask you to complete an exercise. This Workbook will provide the space for you to keep these insights altogether. All sections are designed to give you a deeper understanding and broader experience of Essential Feng Shui for your own home. The Immerse Yourself sections give you an opportunity to deepen and personalize your learning experience. These are provided for your self-inquiry and we do not ask you to share them with us. On the other hand, some exercises will need to be submitted to qualify for a Certificate of Completion. These are listed on the Project Cover Sheet. By the time you complete the Basics @ Home, you’ll understand more fully

the basic Essential Feng Shui tools and know how to determine any changes and enhancements that are most appropriate for each room. To receive a Certificate of Completion, please see the last page in this workbook. We encourage you to immerse yourself in this material so that you can gain a

thorough working knowledge of the Essential Feng Shui Basics and feel confident when applying them in your life.

Essential Feng Shui is: * The study of how to arrange your environment to enhance your life. * The capacity to observe how your surroundings can promote or diminish your health, wealth, and happiness. * The exploration of the dynamic interconnections between you and your environment. * The ability to reveal the impact your environment has on the quality of your life. * Not an event. It is a lifestyle! -- Terah Kathryn Collins

When there is beauty in the person, There is harmony in the home.

When there is harmony in the home, There is honor in the nation.

    The Three Foundational Principles

of Essential Feng Shui 1. Everything is Alive Everything, including your home, car, and computer, is alive with the vital energy called Ch’i. All of the people, places, and things that surround you are alive with the associations and memories you have about them. All of your possessions are essentially “talking” to you all the time. 2. Everything is Connected Like it or not, you are essentially connected to everybody and everything surrounding you. Your relationships with your home, garden, neighbors, and community are especially important due to their proximity. Also, all aspect of your life, including your health, wealth, and general happiness are all connected to each other, and directly affect each other all the time. 3. Everything is Always Changing The one constancy in our world is change. As you change, grow, and move through your life, it is important to change your environment to reflect who you are now. These changes may be small or large, from a new plant to a new home office in the old guest room. There is a Chinese saying :”If you want change in your life, move 27 things in your house.”

    Three Practical Ways

to Bring Essential Feng Shui Principles into Your Life:

    1. Live With What You Love Imagine living exclusively with things you absolutely love. Sort your belongings by asking, “Do I love this?” If you don’t, let it go as soon as possible! As you do this, fresh, vital Ch’i flows into your life, and everything that surrounds you becomes a positive Environmental Affirmation. Your environment transforms into a place that truly nurtures and uplifts you all the time. 2. Put Safety and Comfort First Choose things that first pass the safety and comfort test, and let beauty follow. For instance, choose tables with rounded corners and chairs that are genuinely comfortable. Be sure you locate yourself in the “power position” – with a view of the door – as often as possible. 3. Express and Organize Yourself Your Ch’i will expand and strengthen as you creatively express yourself. Make sure you have a place within your home where you can truly express yourself, whether it’s an alcove, a room, or an entire wing of your abode. Expression is like exhalation, and organization is like inhalation. One cannot truly exist without the other. Organize your possessions, and new creative expressions and opportunities will flow into your life.

    Room Balance Analysis

Use the following list to assess the current Yin/Yang balance of each room in your home. If you have equal amounts of a given feature, such as both small and large art, circle both. If there’s a category that doesn’t exist in a room, simply move to the next one. .Please write a few sentences about what you discovered about one room and any changes you made as a result.

    Name of the Room _______________________________

Room size Small Large Location in House Quiet/private Noisy/busy Room’s View Intimate/private Grand Room’s View Natural Houses/buildings/street Ceiling Low High Natural Light Low Bright Electrical Light Dim Bright Open floor space Small Amounts Large expanses Floors Carpeting/area rugs Tile/cement/wood/stone Wall colors Medium, dark or muted Light or bright Furniture Many pieces Few pieces Furniture colors Medium, dark or muted Light or bright Furniture and décor Small Large Furniture and décor Low High Seating Soft, padded Hard, unpadded Furniture shapes Curved, rounded lines Straight, angular lines Patterns Floral Geometric Fabrics Textured Smooth/shiny Design Elaborate/layered/ornate Plain/simple/uncomplicated Displayed collections Many Few or none Art Many pieces Few or no pieces Art Small Large Pillows Many Few or none Books Many Few or none Mirrors Small Large Plants Many Few or none Storage areas & closets Organized Chaotic/disorganized TOTAL YIN___________ YANG____________

    Clutter =

Items that are disliked, unused, in excess, and/or disorganized.

Choose a space that you consider cluttered, such as a closet, storeroom, cabinet, desk drawer, table top, or kitchen cupboard. Label 3 boxes or bags: 1. Throwaway

    2. Giveaway

    3. Stowaway

Ask yourself these questions about each item, and place it in the appropriate container until the space is empty:

mories or emotions that I associate with it?

When you have separated all items into one of the 3 categories:

    1. Put the Throwaways in the trash immediately!

    2. Prepare and label the Giveaways to go to their new home - friends, family, charity, etc. - and make sure to remove them from your space within a week.

    3. Stowaway the items you are keeping to their proper places with love and gratitude.

Congratulations! Watch for the helpful people, opportunities, and things that flow into your life because you have let go of the old and made room for the new.

Attend the Bagua Map Online Course

The Bagua Map Online Course Arranging an environment to hold happiness in place is the primary goal of Feng Shui, and one of the most intriguing tools we utilize is the Bagua Map (see Illustrated Bagua Map, next page). Many people discover that their challenges in life are directly related to the Bagua areas in their homes that they dislike, don’t use, or are cluttered. It’s also a very useful tool when building or remodeling a home.

Putting it all Together As you open your Feng Shui Eyes, you may see many things that you can do to enhance your environment. However, in almost every case, there are one or two glaring challenges that need to be worked with first. When these primary challenges are balanced, the flow of Ch'i is enhanced and your ability to accomplish other suggestions is strengthened. Therefore, it's important to prioritize your Feng Shui tasks, knowing what to do first, and then how to proceed from there. 1. Address and enhance Bagua areas of the structure. Make sure a whole shape is in some way anchored, using indoor, outdoor, or transcendental enhancements. Pay special attention to Bagua areas corresponding to your challenges or problems. 2. Enhance the Bagua in each room. As above, pay special attention to Bagua areas corresponding to your issues. Choosing personalized enhancements. 3. Balance extremes and put safety and comfort first - look for sharp objects, angles and corners, too much/too little/uncomfortable furniture and lighting, seats and beds with no view of the door, blocked entries, pathways and hallways, heavy overhead objects, etc. 4. Balance the Elements. Ideally, there are yin and yang representatives of all five elements in all spaces, reflecting your own style and taste. 5. Question room usage. Are all rooms being used to your satisfaction? Are there rooms that would function better for you (i.e. turning a guestroom into a home office, etc.)? 6. Thoroughly organize every indoor and outdoor space. Closets, garage, kitchen, storage areas, basements, attics, drawers and jewelry boxes - there's no place to hide from "Feng Shui Eyes!” 7. Highlight the importance of living with what you love, and letting go of the rest. Make sure all your material possessions, including furniture and art, are enhancing the Ch'i and have pleasant memories or feelings attached to them.

Each item is essentially an "environmental affirmation" in your life. Letting go of the old attracts the new. 8. Creatively express yourself in your environment. Play music, dance, arrange flowers, make art, create blessings, cook, entertain, decorate for the seasons, enjoy hobbies of all kinds. Once you are organized, creativity and self-expression can blossom. Keep in mind the basic philosophy of Essential Feng Shui - That everything is alive, connected and always changing, to live with what they love, address safety and comfort in all rooms, and get organized. Give yourself positive feedback and encouragement as possible, and receive praise and compliments with gratitude!
