Mumbai, formerly Bombay, is the capital of the Indian state of Maharashtra. As of 2009, Mumbai is the second larg‐est city in the world in terms of population, with the city proper having a population of approximately 14 million in‐habitants, and along with the neighboring cities of Navi Mumbai and Thane, it forms an urban agglomeration with around 19 million people.  Mumbai lies on the west coast of India and has a deep natural harbor. As of 2009, Mum‐bai was named an Alpha world city. 

The seven islands that came to constitute Bombay were home to communities of fishing colonies. For centuries, the islands came under the control of successive kingdoms and indigenous empires before being ceded to Portuguese settlers and subsequently to the British East India Company. During the mid‐18th century, Bombay emerged as a sig‐nificant trading town. Economic and educational development characterized the city during the 19th century. It be‐came a strong base for the Indian independence movement during the early 20th century. When India became inde‐pendent in 1947, the city was incorporated into Bombay State. In 1960, following the Samyukta Maharashtra move‐ment, a new state of Maharashtra was created with Bombay as the capital. It was renamed Mumbai in 1995.   

Day One  Today you depart the USA on your flight to Mumbai (formerly Bombay).          

Day Two    Arrive Mumbai's Chatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA).  Following customs, immigration for‐malities and baggage collection, your tour representative will meet you as you exit the airport.  He will take you to your awaiting coach for transfer to the hotel.  Upon arrival at the hotel you will be met by a Seven Wonders Travel representative who will travel with you throughout the tour.  Your rooms will be available for immediate occupancy.  (Arrive shortly after midnight.)

Day Three    After a leisurely breakfast, depart the hotel for a full day tour of Mumbai.  Visit The Gateway of India is Mumbai's—and perhaps India's—must‐see tourist spot.  It is a genuinely impressive structure, but it also carries the weight of India's vast colonial heritage.  A Gateway of India history lesson reveals sides of the colonial story. The gateway was built to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary in 1911, a visit that confirmed British dominion over the country.  

 

 

 

  

The construction of the Gateway of India was completed in 1924, nine years after its foundation stone was laid. This was clearly meant to be an extravagant monument, and is one of the most instantly im‐pressive pieces of architectural tribute you'll likely see in India.  It's somewhat ironic, then, that the Gateway of India in Mumbai today signifies Indian independence as much as it does the Raj era of power.  As independence was ushered into India in 1948, the last battalion of British infantry symboli‐cally passed through the Gateway of India before setting sail for home. 

The structure itself boasts a design that mixes a full colonial sense of scale—bigger is better—with  Gujarati decorative flourishes. It was made from a mixture of reinforced  concrete and yellow basalt, which combine to make the Gateway of India look both steadfast and attractive. The Gateway's beauti‐ful facade is also well complemented by Mumbai's harbor.   Next, a cruise to Elephanta Island, where you will see 8th‐century shrine cut from the hillside.  Among the sculptures is the magnificent “Mahashmurti or Hindu Trinity, represent the three aspects of Shiva the Creator, the Preserver, and the Destroyer.  These caves provide an exciting glimpse of Indian sculp‐ture dating from about 600 AD.  Huge panels depict episodes relating to Lord Shiva, each executed with power, grace and an amazing sense of movement.  

        

Lunch at Gaylord Restaurant.  Continue on to The Prince of Wales Museum, one of the best‐known museums in the country. This magnificent heritage building, situated on the famous 'Crescent Site' on  the way to the Gateway of India, is a landmark of south Mumbai.  Architecturally it is an exquisite example of the Indo‐Saracenic style, popular in India during the early part of this century.  It was designed as a museum by the archi‐tect George Wittet in 1909. It was opened for public in 1922 mainly with the collections acquired by the Trustees and the Sir Ratan Tata bequest. The collections have swelled since then and today the  museum has expanded into various sections, including the Maritime Heritage gallery, the first of its kind in India.  A new textile wing opened in April of 2012 which will highlight the beautiful royal tex‐tiles.              In the evening, visit the famous markets, Crawford Market, Balbadevi Bazaar, and the Mangaldas Mar‐ket for clothing.  A welcome dinner will be held in the evening at the hotel.

 Day Four    After breakfast, depart the hotel for a city tour of Mumai.  Located on a leafy quiet lane, Mani Bhavan is the old Mumbai residence of Mahatma Gandhi.  It’s a pretty, two‐storied structure that now houses a reference library with over 2000 books, a photo exhibi‐tion of Gandhi's life, and well preserved memorabilia.  The spinning wheel Gandhi used to spin yarn is on display, and many old Gandhians still visit today to pay homage to their hero.   

Next stop will be Dhobi Ghat, Mumbai's outdoor laundromat.  It is a fascinating spectacle, looking down on row upon row of open‐air concrete wash pens, each fitted with its own flogging stone, while Mumbai's dhobis (around 200 dhobi families work together here) relentlessly pound the dirt from the city's garments in a timeless tradition. Known as the world's largest outdoor laundry, the municipal Dhobi Ghat in Mahalaxmi is where Mumbai's traditional washer folk ‐‐ or dhobis ‐‐ provide a wonderful service, collecting dirty laundry, washing it, and returning it neatly pressed, all for a very small fee. Stubborn stains are removed by soaking garments in a boiling vat of caustic soda; drying takes place on long, brightly colored lines; and heavy wood‐burning irons are used for pressing.             Next, experience the “Mumbai Tiffin Box Suppliers during lunch hour.  This streamlined 120‐year‐old organization with 4,500 semi‐literate dabawalas pick up 175,000 tiffins from homes and deliver them to students, office works, and business every working day by 12:30 pm, served hot.  Tiffins are col‐lected from homes between 7‐9 am and taken to the nearest railway station and are sorted according to their destinations by  10 am when the Dabbawala special train arrives.  The railway provides sorting areas on the platform as well as special compartments on trains between 10‐11:30 am.  It normally takes about 10‐15 minutes to search, assemble and arrange 40 tiffins onto a crate, and by 12:30 pm they are delivered.          Lunch at Khyer Restaurant famous for its Moghul menu.  After lunch proceed to airport for your flight to Udaipur.          Depart  Mumbai at 17:55 hrs         Arrive Udaipur at 19:45 hrs         Airline  Jet Konnect Transfer to your hotel.

Udaipur, set amidst the Aravali hills of south Rajasthan, is regarded as one of the most romantic cities in India.  Presenting an enchanting image of marble palaces, plaid lakes, attractive gardens and green hills, it has been called “the Venice of the East”.  It was founded by Maharana Udai Singh II in 1568 as a traditionally planned and fortified city of palaces, temples and havelis. 

It is known for its Rajput‐era palaces. The Lake Palace, for instance, covers an entire island in the Pichola Lake.  Many of the palaces have been converted into luxury hotels. 

Day Five    After a leisurely breakfast and morning, begin exploring the city of Udaipur.    Your first stop will be City Palace, this is the largest palace complex in Rajasthan.  It is a white marble architectural marvel that stands majestically on a hill surrounded by crenellated walls. This huge edi‐fice, 18 feet high and 800 feet long, was added on to by later rulers, but the additions are so well planned and integrated, it is difficult to believe that it was not conceived as a complete structure.  

 

 

 

 

The entrance to the palace is through 'Hathi Pol' (the Elephant Gate) along the main street of the old city, past the Jagdish temple. The 'Bara Pol' or Great Gate takes you into the first court leading to the Tripolia Gate with eight carved marble Torans or archways. You are led to a series of courtyards, over‐lapping pavilion terraces, corridors and hanging gardens. Here, the eye catches the Suraj Gokhada (Balcony of the Sun) where the 'Suryavanshis' (descendants of the Sun God) ‐ the Maharanas of Mewar appeared before their people to sort out their problems. The Mor Chowk takes its name from the fasci‐nating colored glass mosaics of peacocks which decorate the walls. The Chini Chitrashala is especially attractive with its blue and white ceramics while the wall paintings of Lord Krishna's life at Bhim Vilas Palace command attention. The other palaces are Dilkhush Mahal, Moti Mahal, Sheesh Mahal and Krishna Mahal. The Government Archaeological Museum is outstanding, you will have an opportunity to visit. 

The Crystal Palace 

The brilliant collection of crystals at Fateh Prakash Palace is a rare glimpse of fantasy. Here you will see millions of crystal twinkling and blazing through the corridors of the gallery; 'magnum opus' that are unique in the world.  You will view the elegant sofa sets with hand rests and frames, a four‐poster bed  with rich hangings, tables, throne like chairs and table fountains, just some of the artifacts among the bigger items chiseled out of glass by expert glass cutters.  There are royal perfume and honey bottles, trays and cups, plates and champagne glasses, candle stands and coasters all made up of glass that 

amazes the eye . Next to this you can experience the royal Darbar hall, that displays the portraits of the former rulers of Udaipur like the legend Maharana Pratap and others, who fought bravely and fre‐quently challenged Akbar.  

The gallery is nearly 130 years old with a magnificent collection of Oslers Crystals. These precious crys‐tals were ordered by Maharana Sajjan Singh from the famous manufacturers F and C Osler Company, Birmingham, England around 1877 A.D. The Maharana did not see the most valuable crystals due to his premature death.  The precious crystals remained underground for more than 100 years, due to their beauty and richness. These unique crystals were first displayed to public in 1994.

Jagdish Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu is located in the center of the old city.  The temple has a black marble image of Lord which is unusual for the northern part of the country, here statues of Gods are normally in white marble.  

 

         Final activity of the day, a cruise to Jag Mandir Palace on Lake Pichola (water‐levels permitting).  Jag Mandir Palace is a beautiful palace located on the southern island of Lake Pichola. The three‐storied Palace is a palatial structure made in yellow sandstone and marble. Built in early years of 17th century, the palace was raised by Maharana Karan Singh to serve as a hiding place for Prince Khurram (popularly known as Shah Jahan). Between the years of 1620‐28, Maharana Karan Singh ruled the re‐gion and during this period Prince Khurram revolted against his father.            

 

Late afternoon visit to meet the rare textile artists of Udaipur who have created woven, printed, dyed, and embroidered textiles for centuries.  For generations these artists have preserving the identity of each art form.  Variations in color, print, texture, and finish of these textiles are inherent to the hand‐made process that has changed little over the years and reflects the individuality of the artists.  You will visit the homes of some of the last remaining in the line to witness, understand, and appreciate the subtle nuances of these art forms unique to Udaipur.

Day Six  Today you celebrate the temples of Eklingji and Nagda set in a deep ravine near Eklingji Lake.    Eklingji temple is home to a manifestation of Shiva, the god who guards the fortunes of the rulers of Mewar.  Eklingji is a lovely marble complex made up of 108 temples, the first of which was built in 734 A.D. by Bappa Rawal, legendary founder of the Sisodia clan, who ruled the Mewar kingdom for hun‐dreds of years. The entire complex, most of it rebuilt in the 15th century, has a wonderfully uplifting atmosphere, particularly during prayer times.  The Maharani of Udaipur comes to pay his respects here when he is in town, walking among his subjects as a mere mortal despite the attendant bowing and scraping. The four‐faced black lingam apparently marks the spot where Bappa Rawal was given the title Darwan ("servant") of Eklingji by his guru; outside, facing Shiva, is Nandi, Shiva's vehicle. Wander around the temple complex and you'll find a number of carvings from the Kama Sutra.                 

Enjoy lunch at a Palace Resort, Devi Garh.  Nagda Temple, which lies 1 1/4 miles north of Eklingji Temple and is fairly deserted.  All that survives of the site of the ancient capital of Mewar, which dates back to A.D. 626, are the ruins of the Saas Bahu, a 10th‐century Vaishnavite twin temple (Saas meaning "mother‐in‐law" and Bahu "daughter‐in‐law") and the remains of Adbhutji Temple.

 Day Seven    After breakfast check‐out from the hotel and drive to Jodhpur, stopping at Ranakpur to visit a unique Jain Temple.  The temples in Ranakpur are quite unique in style and design. The ceilings of the temples are carved with fine, lace‐like scrollwork and geometric patterns. The domes are carved in concentric bands and the brackets connecting the base of the dome with the top are covered with figures of deities.   The 15th century Adishwar temple or the Chaumaukha temple built by Sheth Dhanna Shah is a fine structure. It is in the form of a Nalinigulm Vimana (heavenly aircraft) that Shah had seen in his dream. Designed by Dipa Shilpi it took 65 years (1367‐1432) to erect and is the largest and most complex Jain temple in India. It also boasts of being one of the five most important holy shrines of the Jains.             

The temple has 29 halls, 80 domes and the pavilions  include 1,444 pillars, each of them so  intricately 

and artistically carved that they’ll leave a lasting impression. The figures of dancing goddesses, beauti‐

fully engraved on these pillars are an absolute architectural wonder. The best feature about these  

 

pillars is that no two pillars are alike in design and sculptures. Not only the pillars but 

almost every surface  is carved with great  intricacy. As you go  from one chamber  to 

another you’ll realize that  it does not conform to the traditional  longitudinal plan of 

Indian temples but follows a cruciform design.  

 

This plan has  four separate entrances, one on each side. Each of these then  lead through a series of 

columned halls  to a central arena and  the sanctum which has  the  four  faced white marble  image of 

Lord  Adinath.  The  first  Jain  saint  Adinathji  or  Rishabhadev  is  surrounded  by  several  other  smaller 

shrines and domes. These are  in  turn surrounded by a Bhamati or range of cells  for  images, each of 

which has a roof of its own. Architects are of the opinion that this is probably one of the most compli‐

cated and extensive  Jain  temples  in  India and also  the most  complete  for  Jain  sectarian  rituals. The 

temple covers almost 48,000 sq ft with 29 halls and is also said to have 84 underground cells. 

After  lunch at King’s Abode Restaurant  , continue to Jodhpur, where this evening you will experience 

with a rid on a Tuk‐Tuk (auto‐rickshaw).

Jodhpur 

Jodhpur, is the second largest city in the Indian state of Rajasthan. It was formerly the seat of a princely state of the same name, it was the capital of the kingdom known as Merwar. Jodhpur is a popular tourist destination, featuring many palaces, forts and temples, set in the stark landscape of the Thar desert. 

The city is known as the Sun City for the bright, sunny weather it enjoys all year. It is also referred to as the Blue City due to the indigo tinge of the whitewashed houses around the Mehrangarh Fort. Jodhpur lies near the geographic centre of Rajasthan state.  The old city of Jodhpur is surrounded by a thick stone wall.  

Day Eight 

After breakfast, visit Mehrangarh Fort (Citadel of the Sun) that evokes the very spirit of the Rathores, 

the ruling local Rajput clan.   

 

 

 

 

Mehrangarh Fort is about 3 miles from the town of Jodhpur. Guarding the city below, crowning a per‐pendicular cliff, the fort was founded by Rao Jodha in 1459 AD when he shifted his capital from Man‐dore. Standing sentinel to the city below, it over looks the rugged and rocky terrain and houses a pal‐ace intricately adorned with long carved panels and latticed windows exquisitely wrought from red sandstone.   The apartments within, have their own magic—Moti Mahal (Pearl Palace), Phool Mahal (Flower Pal‐ace), Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace), Sileh Khana and Daulat Khana with a rich varied collection of pal‐anquins, howdahs, royal cradles, miniature paintings of various schools, folk music, instruments, cos‐tumes, furniture and an impressive armory.   The display of cannons on the ramparts near Chamunda temple is among the rarest in India. As you climb up, folk musicians revive the grandeur of a bygone era.  

This afternoon, explore Jaswant Thada an architectural landmark located in Jodhpur. It is a white mar‐ble memorial built by Sardar Singh in 1899 in memory of Maharja Jaswant Singh II . 

 

 

 

 

 

After  lunch, visit Bishnoi Village (the protectors of nature since the middle centuries), Potter’s Village 

that houses a community of potters.  You will squat beside them and be instructed on how to spin the 

wheel, form clay and set the pots out to dry.  The village looks like a Civil War memorial battlefield with 

its drying pots resembling piles of cannonballs. 

The Bishois follow 29 principles of a non‐violet sect, founded in the 15th century by Jambeswarji.  They 

are known for the reverence for wildlife and their careful environment management, especially that of 

green vegetarian and preserving blackbuck antelope from extinction.  They are a gentle community of 

potters, weavers, leather embroiderers and camel herders.

Jaipur 

Jaipur, also popularly known as the Pink City, is the capital of Rajasthan State, India.  Jaipur is the for‐mer capital of the princely state of Jaipur.  Founded on 18 November 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the ruler of Amber, the city today has a population of more than 2 million residents.  It is also known as the Paris of India. 

Jaipur is the first well planned city of India, located in the desert lands of India, Rajasthan.  The city which once was the capital of the royalty now is the capital city of Rajasthan. The very structure of Jaipur resembles the taste of the Rajputs and the Royal Families.  Today, Jaipur is the major business centre for the natives of Rajasthan with all requisites of a metropolitan city. 

The city is remarkable among pre‐modern Indian cities for the width and regularity of its streets which are laid out into six sectors separated by broad streets 111 ft wide.  The urban quarters are further di‐vided by networks of gridded streets. Five quarters wrap around the east, south, and west sides of a central palace quarter, with a sixth quarter immediately to the east. The Palace quarter encloses a sprawling palace complex (the Hawa Mahal, or palace of winds), formal gardens, and a small lake.  Na‐hargarh Fort, where King Sawai Jaisingh II used to stay, crowns the hill in the northwest corner of the old city.    Day Nine    After breakfast check out from your hotel and drive to Jaipur.  While this is a beautiful drive it is a long drive, 7 hours.  We will stop along the way for lunch.  Upon arrival in Jaipur you will check in to your hotel.     After lunch visit Sanganer, famous for its fine hand block printing in subdued colors.  Hand block print‐ing was patronized by the royal family.  Sanganer has become an export hub for hand blocked prints.  The print is modeled after flowers .  The Sanganeri Print is visible from small flowr motifs like stylized sunflowers, narcissuses, roses, and other flowers.

Day Ten   

After breakfast depart to the Amber Fort, with its honey‐colored fortress‐palace in the Aravalli Hills. 

Amber Fort is known for its unique artistic style, blending both Hindu and Muslim (Mughal) elements, and its ornate and breathtaking artistic mastery. The fort borders Maota Lake, and was originally built by the Meenas in the town they consecrated to Amba, the Mother Goddess, whom they knew as `Gatta Rani'.  Built over the remnants of an earlier structure, the palace complex which stands today was commenced under the reign of Raja Man Singh, Commander in Chief of Akbar’s army and a mem‐ber of the Emperor's inner circle, in 1592. 

Like the entire fort complex, Amber Fort is constructed of white and red sandstone. The walls of the interior of the fort are covered with murals, frescoes, and paintings depicting various scenes from daily life. Other walls are covered with intricate carvings, mosaic, and minute mirror work. 

 

 

 

 

 

A ramp takes you to the hilltop palace, beautifully caparisoned elephants go up and down and will carry you to the top of the hill (optional).   

Lunch at Samode Havell. 

Visit to the City Palace, which includes the Chandra Mahal and Mubarak Mahal palaces and other build‐ings.  It was the seat of the Maharaja of Jaipur, the head of the Kachwaha Rajput clan. The Royal Resi‐dence is the highlight of any visit.  The palace was built between 1729 and 1732, initially by Sawai Jai Singh II, the ruler of Amber. He planned and built the outer walls, and later additions were made by successive rulers right up to the 20th century. 

 

 

     

Next, visit the Jantar Mantar Observatory, built in the 17th century by the founder of Jaipur who, be‐sides being a prince was also a soldier, astronomer, and builder.

 Agra 

 Agra,  is a city on the banks of the Yamuna River in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, India.  It is 

mentioned in the epic Mahabharata where it was called Agrevaṇa, or 'the border of the forest'.  Leg‐end ascribes the founding of th city to Raja Badal Singh (around 1475), who's fort, Badalgarh, stood on or near the site of the present fort.  However, the 11th century Persian poet Mus’ud Sa’d Salman writes of a desperate assault on the fortress of Agra, then held by the Shahi King Jayapala, by Sultan Mahmud Ghazni.  Sultan Sikandor Lodi was the first to move his capital from Delhi to Agra in the year 1506: he I in 1517 and his son Ibrahim Lodi remained in power there for nine more years, finally being defeated at the Battle of Panipat in 1526.  It achieved fame as the capital of the Mughal emperors from 1526 to 1658 and remains a major tourist destination because of its many splendid Mughal –era build‐ings, most notably the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri, all three of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. 

Day Eleven    After breakfast drive to Agra, stopping enroute for lunch at a charming heritage mansion “Laxmi Vilas Palace” in Bharatpur.  Drive is approximately 4 hours.  Upon arrival check‐in to your hotel, the Oberoi Udai Vilas, with outstanding views of the Taj Mahal.  This evening horse carriages will take you to the gates of the Taj Mahal.  It is considered one of the most beautiful buildings in the world and the finest example of the late style of Indian Islamic archi‐tecture. The Mughal emperor Shah Jahan ordered it built after the death (1631) of his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The building, which was completed between 1632 and 1638, was designed by the local Muslim architect Ustad Ahmad Lahori; set in its carefully laid out grounds, it is a reflection of the gardens of Paradise to which the faithful ascend. The entire complex, with gardens, gateway structures, and mosque, was completed in 1648.               The Taj Mahal mausoleum stands at one end of the garden adorned with fountains and marble pave‐ments. The garden contains four water channels to echo the four rivers of Islamic Paradise. It rises from a platform 313 ft on a side, bearing a white marble minaret at each corner; the enclosure, 186 ft on a side, has truncated corners and a high portal on each side. The white marble exterior is inlaid with semiprecious stones arranged in Arabic inscriptions (designed by a local artist Amanat Khan, who was Shah Jahan's calligrapher), floral designs, and arabesques, and the salient features of the interior are accented with agate, jasper, and colored marbles. The roofing dome, on the inside, is 80 ft high and 50 ft in diameter; outside it forms a bulb, which tapers to a spire topped by a crescent. The tomb cham‐ber, with its two sarcophagi, is an octagonal room in the center of the edifice (the royal couple, how‐ever, are buried in an underground vault). The chamber is softly illuminated by the light that passes through double screens of intricately carved marble set high in the walls.

After breakfast depart to Agra Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is about 1 mile northwest of its much more famous sister monument, the Taj Mahal. The fort can be more accurately described as a walled palatial city. 

It is the most important fort in India. The great Mughals Babur, Humayun, Akbar, Jehangir, Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb lived here, and the country was governed from here. It contained the largest state treasury and mint. It was visited by foreign ambassadors, travelers and the highest dignitaries who par‐ticipated in the making of history in India.  The fort has a semi‐circular plan, lying parallel to the river. Its walls are seventy feet high. Double ram‐parts have massive circular bastions at regular intervals.  Two of the fort's gates are notable: the "Delhi Gate" and the "Lahore Gate." The Lahore Gate is also popularly also known as the Amar Singh Gate, for Amar Singh Rathore. 

The monumental Delhi Gate, which faces the city on the western side of the fort, is considered the grandest of the four gates and a masterpiece of Akbar's time.  It was built in 1568 both to enhance se‐curity and as the king's formal gate, and includes features related to both. It is embellished with inlay work in white marble, proof to the richness and power of the Great Mughals. A wooden drawbridge was used to cross the moat and reach the gate from the mainland; inside, an inner gateway called Hathi Pol ("Elephant Gate") ‐ guarded by two life sized stone elephants with their riders ‐ added an‐other layer of security. The drawbridge, slight ascent, and 90 degree turn between the outer and inner gates, make the entrance impregnable. During a siege, attackers would employ elephants to crush a fort's gates. Without a level, straight run‐up to gather speed, however, something prevented by this layout, elephants are ineffective. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Because the Indian military (the Parachute Brigade in particular) is still using the northern portion of the Agra Fort, the Delhi Gate cannot be used by the public. Tourists enter via the Lahore Gate, so named because it faces Lahore, now in Pakistan.  Some of the most historically interesting mixing of Hindu and Islamic architecture are found here. In fact, some of the Islamic decorations feature haraam (forbidden) images of living creatures ‐ dragons, elephants and birds, instead of the usual patterns and calligraphy seen in Islamic surface decoration.  After completing your tour of Agra Fort you will continue with a visit to Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity (home for orphans of all ages which is supported by the efforts of various corporations, foundations, and individuals.  The sisters provide children with clothing, food, affection, an a quality education.  Return to the hotel for lunch.  Balance of the day is at leisure.

Day Thirteen  This morning you return to the Taj Mahal for sunrise.           After bidding farewell to the Taj Mahal, you begin your journey to Delhi.  You will stop in in Sinkandra to visit the tomb of Akbar, the great Mughal Emperor.

Delhi 

Delhi, known locally as Dilli,  and also by the official name National Capital Territory of Delhi (NCT), is the largest metropolis by area and the second‐largest metropolis by population in India.  It is the eighth largest metropolis in the world by population with more than 12.25 million inhabitants in the territory and with over 15.9 million residents in the National Capital Region area.  The name Delhi is often also used to include some urban areas near the NCT, as well as to refer to New Delhi, the capital of India, which lies within the NCT.  

Located on the banks of the River Yamuna, Delhi has been continuously inhabited since at least the 6th century BC.  After the rise of the Delhi Sultanate, Delhi emerged as a major political, cultural and com‐mercial city along the trade routes between northwest India and the Indo‐Gangetic plains.  It is the site of many ancient and medieval monuments, archaeological sites and remains.  In 1639, Mughal em‐peror Shahjahan built a new walled city in Delhi which served as the capital of the Mughal Empire from 1649 to 1857. 

After the British East India Company gained control of much of India during the 18th and 19th centu‐ries, Calcutta became the capital both under Company rule and under the British Raj, until George V announced in 1911 that it was to move back to Delhi.  A new capital city, New Delhi, was built to the south of the old city during the 1920s. When India gained independence from British rule in 1947, New Delhi was declared its capital and seat of government.  As such, New Delhi houses important offices of the federal government, including the Parliament of India.

Day Fourteen   

After breakfast your discovery of New Delhi starts with a visit to the Humayun’s tomb.  This complex of buildings was commissioned by Humayun's wife Hamida Banu Begum in 1562 CE.  It was the first gar‐den‐tomb on the Indian subcontinent.  It is built near the Dina‐panah citadel also known as Purana Qila, that Humayun founded in 1533. It was also the first structure to use red sandstone at such a scale.   The complex was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993, and since then has undergone ex‐tensive restoration work, which is still ongoing. 

 

         The complex encompasses the main tomb of the Emperor Humayun, which houses the graves of his wife, Hamida Begum, and also Dara Shikoh, son of the later Emperor Shah Jahan, as well as numerous other subsequent Mughals, including Emperor Jahandar Shah, Farrukhsiyar, Rafi Ul‐Darjat, Rafi Ud‐Daulat and Alamgir II.  It represented a leap in Mughal architecture, and together with its accomplished Charbagh garden, typical of Persian gardens, but never seen before in India, it set a precedent for sub‐sequent Mughal architecture. It is seen as a clear departure from the fairly modest mausoleum of his father, the first Mughal Emperor, Babur, called Bagh‐e Babur (Gardens of Babur) in Kabul (Afghanistan).  Although he was  the first Emperor to start the tradition of being buried in a paradise garden, it created a precedent for future Mughal architecture of royal mausoleums, which reached its zenith with the Taj Mahal.    

The Red Fort is a 17th century fort complex constructed by the Mughal emperor Shahjahan in the walled city of Old Delhi. It served as the capital of the Mughals until 1857, when Mughal emperor Ba‐hadur Shah Zafar was exiled by the British Indian government. The British used it as a military camp until India was made independent in 1947. It is now a popular tourist site, as well as a powerful symbol of India's sovereignty: the Prime Minister of India raises the flag of India on the ramparts of the Lahori  

Gate of the fort complex every year on Independence Day. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007.            The Gandhi Memorial is found in the Raj Ghat area of Delhi on he banks of the Yamuna River.  It in‐cludes other burial site of India’s rules including Neru, Indera Gandhi, and Rajiv Gandhi.  As you ap‐proach the memorial you will be asked to leave your shoes and walk to the inner area of the memorial.  As you reach the black marble square tomb, where Gandhi was cremated after his assassination in 1948, you will find India people paying homage to the great leader.  It is a beautiful site with flower petals always lying on the tomb.  People kneel at the front side where his last words are written, “Oh my God” (“Haram”).             Visit Qutab Minar, built in the early 13th century, the red sandstone tower of Qutb Minar is 72.5 m high, tapering from 2.75 m in diameter at its peak to 14.32 m at its base, and alternating angular and rounded flutings. The surrounding archaeological area contains funerary buildings, notably the magnifi‐cent Alai‐Darwaza Gate, the masterpiece of Indo‐Muslim art (built in 1311), and two mosques, includ‐ing the Quwwatu'l‐Islam, the oldest in northern India, built of materials reused from some 20 Brahman temples.          

Time allowing a visit to Old Delhi, the 300‐year‐old walled city.  Take a rickshaw ride through the lanes of “Chandni Chowk” or Silver Street, being driven through the winding lanes is a memorable experi‐ence.  This is Delhi’s most populated area and the largest marketplace.  Return to the hotel for a leisurely evening.                              Hotel—The Oberoi New Delhi

Varanasi  

Varanasi, or Benaras, (also known as Kashi) is one of the oldest living cities in the world. Varanasi`s Prominence in Hindu mythology is virtually unrevealed. Mark Twain, the English author and literature, who was enthralled by the legend and sanctity of Benaras, once wrote : "Benaras is older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend and looks twice as old as all of them put together" . Ac‐cording to the ‘Vamana Purana’, the Varuna and the Assi rivers originated from the body of the primor‐dial Person at the beginning of time itself. The tract of land lying between them is believed to be ‘Varanasi’, the holiest of all pilgrimages.  Steeped in tradition and mythological legacy, Kashi is the ‘original ground ‘ created by Shiva and Parvati, upon which they stood at the beginning of time.   One of the oldest cities in the world, it was responsible for the birth of three major religions; Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jain.  Here you will find the Ganges teeming with masses of humanity, all one regard‐less of rich or poor.  They come to achieve purity by dipping in the river’s holy water to achieve purity.  The sounds are amazing, temple bells and chanting as they manifest their faith to achieve purity.  Day Fifteen    This morning you fly to Varanasi, the great pilgrimage city on the River Ganges, holy to Hindus and Bud‐dhists alike.          Depart New Delhi: 10:40 hrs       Arrive Varanasi:  11:50 hrs       Via:  Jet Airways   Transfer to your hotel for check‐in.  Lunch at hotel, followed by a lecture from a local historian.  You will meet in the lobby to depart to the River Ganges, the heart and soul of this ancient city.    You approach the Ghats (wide steps leading into the river) by rickshaw, cycling through the narrow lanes of the city as dusk descends for the evening Aarti ceremony along the Ganges River. Bear witness to this solemn tradition and a slice of India’s ancient culture. Join the mass of worshippers as they pray near the water by the light of open flames, the scent of incense filling the air.       

During the ceremony priests anoint our foreheads with the traditional ‘tikki’ and chant mantras asking for the blessing of the Gods.

Day Sixteen    Rise early to experience India’s spirituality upon the sacred Ganges from another perspective — by pri‐vate sunrise cruise. In the blue light of dawn, travel through Varanasi’s misty, winding streets and board a private row boat, watching from the water as the sun rises and the banks begin to crowd with worshippers.  Here a multitude of Hindu pilgrims perform the most important ritual of the day—the invoking of the rising sun.  Our boat glides along the riverbank or the ‘ghats’ ‐ the steps that lead down to the river.  These stone steps link the great Hindu city the far greater river.          Maharajas and other princely rulers built many of the ghats.  Each has its own history and legends about its healing capabilities.  In the early morning light, we hear the temple bells ringing, the conch sells being blown announcing the arrival of a new day.  On the banks you see pilgrims performing ritu‐als to their ancestors, people practicing Hatha yoga and sitting in the lotus position in deep contempla‐tion oblivious to the world around them.  We also see Yogis floating in the Ganges performing Yoga in he water.  The Brahmin priests offer prayers.  Return to the hotel for a late breakfast.  Proceed to the buried city of Sarnath, the birthplace of Buddhism, where the Budda first spoke of his philosophy.  An impressive stupa marks the spot where he first preached his message.  Sarnath is also sacred to the Jains as the birthplace of one of their holy masters known as ‘tirthankaras’.  

Return to your hotel for lunch and check‐out.  Transfer to the airport for you flight to Delhi—          Depart Varnasi 15:10 hrs         Arrive Delhi 16:35 hrs         Via Jet Airways  Check‐in to the Oberoi New Delhi, freshen‐up and get together for a farewell dinner.  Time to say good‐bye to old friends and new.

REFUNDS AND CANCELLATIONS Dam Vacations must receive all cancellations by phone followed by a written cancellation.  The following cancellation fees will apply: 

More than 90 days prior to departure: 50% of deposit 

89 to 60 days prior to departure: 100% of deposit

FORCE MAJEURE Adam Vacations is not liable for acts of God, fire, weather, acts of governments or other authorities, wars, civil disturbances, riots, terrorist acts, strikes, thefts, pilferage, epidemics, quarantines, dangers incident to sea, land and air travel, and other similar inci‐dents beyond our control.  

RESPONSIBILITY Adam Vacations purchases transportation, hotel and cruise ac‐commodations, restaurants and other services from independent suppliers not affiliated with Adam.  Although Adam chooses the best suppliers available, the company in no way has the right to control their operations and CANNOT, THEREFORE, BE LIABLE FOR ANY PERSONAL INJURY, PROPERTY DAMAGE OR LOSS which may occur due to (1) wrongful, negligent or arbitrary acts of omission on the part of the supplier its employees and others not under the direct control of Adam, or (2) defects or failures of any aircraft, vessel, automotive vehicle or other equipment under the control of independent suppliers.
