It is hard to believe that the new school year has already

begun, but the relentless passage of time reminds us that it

waits for no one...ready or not! So, the best thing we can

do is to make ourselves ready and go with the flow of time,

since we really have little choice.

The Scriptures this week-end take a very positive

approach to the inevitable passage of time by helping us

realize what a wonderful gift we have in God, who is

always so good to us, although sometimes we may not

think such is the case. The Book of Deuteronomy enjoins us

to hear the statutes and decrees of the Lord AND to have

the good sense to observe them, because hearing alone is

not enough. If we do observe them and practice them, we

will give witness to the fact that we are a wise and

intelligent people who have wise and intelligent guides to

lead us, which ultimately leads others to marvel at God,

who is the source of such wisdom in the first place. How

good it is for all of us to marvel at the wisdom, kindness

and generosity of God whom, unfortunately, we so often

overlook.

The second reading continues in this theme, reminding us

rather bluntly, "Be doers of the word and not hearers only,

deluding yourselves." Obviously, hearing the Word of God

is important and is a necessary step before we can actually

do what the Word demands of us. But if we only hear the

Word without it having a consequent effect on our actions,

we are missing the point entirely. Just as we say, "it is not

enough to know ABOUT Jesus, it is necessary to KNOW

Jesus." All of this fits together!

The gospel takes another view and reminds us not to get

caught up with non-essentials. This has happened often

enough when we consider the Pharisees who were often

well-meaning, but allowed themselves to get stuck on non-

essential things at the cost of ignoring or overlooking things

that are essential. In the worst case, they became obsessed

with minutiae to such a degree that even touching an object

could be the cause of being "defiled" to such a degree that a

person would be cut off from the rest of the community.

Jesus reminds them that nothing "that enters a person from

the outside can defile him, but the things that come from

within can defile." Some of those defilements are then listed:

"...evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder, adultery... These

come from within, and they defile."

All this reminds us to tidy up our own houses first before

we start criticizing others. So, we need to be doers of the

word and not hearers only. This is meant to apply to

ourselves first of all before we start applying it to other

people. As always, we can only start with ourselves, but

just think of how much better off we would all be if we just

started with ourselves.

“Why do your disciples not follow

the tradition of the elders but

instead eat a meal with unclean

hands?” He responded, “Well did

Isaiah prophesy about you

hypocrites, as it is written: This

people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far

from me.” - Mk 7:5b-6

Today Jesus teaches us what really matters are

the intentions of our hearts. Bad intentions lead

to angry outbursts with name-calling and

put-downs. These are violent acts that “defile” our

relationships. No one wins; everyone loses. Examine

your heart and open it to God’s love and grace.

Funeral Ministry - A Work Of

Corporal Mercy If you have a

calling to console bereaved

families after the loss of a loved

one, the Funeral Ministry is for you, and we invite you to

join us. Members of this ministry attend parish funerals as

they are able, and provide consolation during this difficult

time by their very presence. Families draw comfort from

hearing our ministry recite the responses, sing the Mass

music, and pray with them as they celebrate the life of their

loved one. We practice the Corporal Works of Mercy as we

help bury the dead. There are no rehearsals for

the Funeral Ministry. Members are simply notified of

upcoming funerals by email and attend independently, and

without obligation, whenever they are able. For more

information, please contact Pam Franko at: 330-468-3239

or [email protected].

The RCIA: A Journey of Faith Since Jesus

invited His first followers to, “Come,

follow me”, the image of journey has been

used to describe Christian discipleship. For

each of us faith is a journey marked with moments of

conversion along the way…..we move from unbelief to

initial faith, from sin to repentance, from painful isolation

to the joyful experience of a loving community, from fear

to love.

Faith, conversion, repentance, celebration and

community – five basic elements that are present in the Rite

of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). The RCIA provides

a setting where the journey of faith and moments of

conversion can be celebrated within the local Church

community. Gatherings begin in September!

Kelly, Alexander Krukemeyer.

50+ COMMUNITY I have to smile at the

Gospel for this week and you probably will

do the same. The Pharisees are complaining

to Jesus that His disciples do not wash their

hands before they eat. As a teacher, I watched the children,

when it was time for lunch, rush to the lunchroom and

devour their lunch so that they could get to the playground

for recess. No washing of hands. As we were growing up

we did the same thing. Currently, we are encouraged to

wash our hands frequently. We wash our hands for fear of

catching the virus and the Jewish people washed hands

according to the laws that God gave to the people of Israel.

They knew that He cared for them. And we know that our

God cares for us as well. We need only to listen to those

officials who make the laws for our benefit. But these are

human rules. Today we need to focus on the law of God

which is much more important. It is the law that brings joy,

the kind of joy and delight that we see in Jesus. Jesus

delighted in helping people. It gave him great pleasure to

make other people happy. He provided wine at a wedding

party, he enjoyed a good meal, often with Lazarus, Martha

and Mary. He took pleasure in the company of sinners. He

has given us laws for our well-being, to help make our

world a better place to be. It is the law that brings joy, the

kind of joy and delight that we see in Jesus. So what's the

best way to be a good Christian? We begin by doing what

Jesus asks us to do, love God above all and our neighbor as

ourselves. Learn to be happy and to enjoy life with its

pleasures. After all, Jesus did!

Our first 50+ meeting, after a long hiatus, will be Friday,

September 10, at 2:00 p.m. in the Parish Center. We

welcome everyone back. Masks are encouraged. Itineraries

will be available at this meeting for our Lancaster trip

on September 22-24. Masks (please bring a few) are a must

as we travel to Pittsburgh, especially in the Sight and Sound

Theater and in this time of uncertainty. We pray that we all

remain safe and healthy.

There will be a special second collection next weekend in

response to the earthquake and Tropical Storm Grace

calamities in Haiti. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops

(USCCB), has asked all U.S. bishops to take up a voluntary

special collection in their dioceses for the Bishops

Emergency Disaster Fund. The people of Haiti are likely to

see ongoing hardship in the weeks ahead as they begin

recovery and rebuilding efforts. Moreover, many parish

churches, chapels, schools, and clinics were devastated

which will impact faith communities for years. Thank you

for your generosity.

HELP A LOCAL FAMILY We are still in need of a used car, in

good working condition, for a local family. If you have a

car you would be willing to donate, contact Mike at 330-

467-0620 or Laura at 330-908-1527 for more information.

We are aware of parishioners who need help, but are too

embarrassed to ask. SVDP is here to help you. All

information is confidential and is not shared with anyone

outside the SVDP. Call the Parish Office phone, 330-467-

7959, press “7” and leave your confidential message. Your

call will be returned in 24-48 hours. Please, do not hesitate

to call.

BUNDLE SUNDAY IS COMING! Bundle Sunday is coming

the weekend of September 11/12. Start cleaning out those

closets! Decluttering your home of unused and unwanted

stuff can make you happier. Maybe it’s time to start

“TIDYING UP”. Now is the time to donate those gently

worn clothing and household items that you haven’t used in

ages. A Cleveland Furniture Bank truck will be in the church

parking lot that weekend. Your donations will be given to

their Thrift Shop that serves over 45,000 customers annually

who may not have the financial means to shop in regular

retail outlets. Please, no large furniture at this time.

Volunteers will be on hand to accept your donations of

clothing, household goods, small appliances and furniture.

We cannot accept baby cribs or car seats due to liability

issues. See the insert in today’s bulletin.

SVDP NEWS

∞ ST. VINCENT DE PAUL AND YOU ∞

Notes from the Blue Army: In an article titled, You Have

Three Best Friends: Jesus, Mary and St. Joseph, Fr. Edward

Broom OMV writes, “One of the greatest sufferings that we

can undergo is that of feeling alone, abandoned, that

nobody really cares for us. If you like, an intense, crushing

loneliness. One of the best ways that we can cope with and

overcome this state of desolation is to cultivate a constant,

keen and growing awareness of three Persons who want to

play an essential part in our lives. They are present to us at

all times, but we are often not present to them; sad to say,

at times we are totally oblivious to their presence. Who are

these important Persons? They are the three members of the

Holy Family: Jesus, Mary and St. Joseph. How ironic is this

statement: we are often too busy to talk to them; but they

are never too busy to enter into conversation with us! What

then are some practical ways in which we can cultivate this

awareness of these three best friends in our daily walk of

life? Indeed, we must have some concrete reminders.” (Fr.

Broom provides five reminders. Here are the first two. We

will continue with the final three next week.)

1. MORNING OFFERING. Start off every day, every

morning, by consecrating yourself to Jesus, Mary and St.

Joseph. Offer to Jesus through Mary and St. Joseph, your

day and all that will transpire during the course of the day.

By doing so, they will walk with you during the day and

you will be walking with them. As such, keep them in mind,

and this crushing state or feeling of loneliness will in great

part be conquered.

2. IMAGES IN YOUR ROOM. Make sure that you have a

painting, picture, icon or statue of Jesus, of Mary, and of St.

Joseph in your room. You might also have a picture or

painting of the Holy Family—Jesus, Mary and St. Joseph

together—on the wall greeting you every time you enter

your room and you should greet them back. Thanks be to

God for the proper use of images and sacramentals that so

easily lift our minds, hearts and souls soaring to God and the

Holy Family! Every time you return home to your room,

Jesus, Mary and St. Joseph are truly there to greet you, and

they are waiting for you to acknowledge and greet them as

well!

PRO-LIFE

NOVENA PRAYER in Gratitude for MOTHER TERESA OF
