We proudly welcome you to the fifth issue of ESPECIAL with the aim to celebrate our accomplishments and to share our values within the community we work.

After starting off with CSR, ESPECIAL has successfully broadened its scope to include corporate activities for the growth of our stakeholders. Aligned with our triple bottom line philosophy, EPCL continues to serve the community and has undertaken several short and long term ventures to benefit the society.

This edition aims to highlight the current project at company and the steps we are taking to grow our employees and reward them for their hard work. Our employees are basis to our success; hence we organized the Corporate Excellence awards to reward them for their hard work and utmost dedication.

We also believe in communicating our endeavors and share our responsibilities, for this purpose, a 3rd Sustainability report, “Values, Sustenance, Excellence”, was designed to portray the entire spectrum of ethical, innovational and social dimensions of the organization and what we are doing for the society.

During the past six months, life has been busy with a number of projects; in March, 2012, the plant had its first turnaround and it played a vital role in ensuring reliability, operational continuity and smooth production for our company, this event was a huge milestone and lifted the spirits of all our people.

The month of July, 2012, depicted great progress for our company as we were able to achieve our highest PVC sales which seemed an unattainable target for many, but with perseverance and dedication our sales team was able to accomplish it. Another milestone during the month was the launch of the Transformation Campaign where the

objective was to generate motivation and encourage organizational progress, the relocation of the Head office to Harbour Front building was a historical moment in EPCL’s Transformation campaign and laid down the importance of organizational adaptability and the will to move forward.

With the goal of saving the environment, the company also commemorated the International Year of Forests; placing the importance of forests in the Northern Parts of Pakistan. For that purpose, on July 10, 2012, the company conducted “Forest of Life” exhibition at the Al Hamra Art Gallery in Lahore with the objective to showcase the diverse range of natural/man-made forests and the important role it plays in the eco-system, trees and foliage that represent the sheer strength of nature were captured using a camera lens and were displayed at the exhibition.

To further emphasize, the Green office program was initiated at the Head office with the aim to reduce the office ecological foot print and reaffirms our strong focus on Health, Safety and Environment.

Then the new scheme of Demand based Irrigation System was celebrated which aimed to bring infertile land in to the folds of fertility and was specially designed to help small-scale farmers who previously faced with water shortage.

In this edition, we would also like to share the personal and professional experience of our business mastermind, the CEO, Mr. Khalid Siraj Subhani. Further on we will also be discussing the work experience of various GTEs of our company and how they have helped the company to grow. The newsletter then takes an inspirational angle as we highlight the daily struggles of Nur Muhammad, a laborer from the village of Jalband, and how EPCL is helping his village to progress by providing them the basic facility of electricity, through Hydel power.

In perfect harmony with its Core Values of Community & Society, a project, highlighting the natural topography of Pakistan, bringing to the forefront the forests that constitute a major area of the landmass that is present and the dangers it faces due to deforestation and other such calamities.

In this regard, Engro Polymer & Chemicals Limited (EPCL) inaugurated a Forest Photography Exhibition showcasing the rich flora of Pakistan. Titled “Forest of Life”, the exhibition was displayed at the Al-Hamra Art Gallery in Lahore, from 10th July till 18th July, 2012 and was open for public viewing. The Forest of Life exhibition aimed to showcase the diverse, natural and manmade forests of Pakistan ranging from the foot of the Hindu Kush, travelling horizontally to the base camp of the K-2 down towards the salty plains of Sindh where the waves of the Arabian Ocean crash into the land.

In recognition of the year 2011 being declared as the International Year of Forests by the United Nations, the Company celebrates the importance of these plantations by exhibiting the forests of Pakistan, which cover roughly 4.2 million hectares of land, making it approx 5% of the total land area of the country. Through such contributions, the organization advocates the preservation and protection of forests, countering global warming and letting the nature’s ecosystem play their part in maintaining a healthy planet. Below are the types of forests of Pakistan captured by the lens of camera and displayed in the exhibition:

Such a pioneering photographic exhibition however, does not mitigate the bigger picture. With the aim of not just showcasing the natural woodlands of Pakistan but also working to ensure their continued survival, EPCL, under its CSR initiative of the Go Green Drive has conducted various plantation efforts in various parts of Pakistan. Reforestation forms an integral part of any organization aiming to be recognized as a responsible corporate citizen. Forested areas ravaged by the increasing demand of wood and other products were targeted in the province of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. We launched our Go Green Drive with 100 hectares in 2009 which was then followed by an additional 100 hectares in 2010 and 61 acres were added in 2011.

The photographs exhibited at the Forest of Life exhibition were captured by one of

Pakistan’s leading photographers, Yasir Nisar, a photographer hailing from the cultural capital of Lahore. The Forest of Life exhibition marks an important page in history by bringing to the forefront the natural topography of Pakistan, awareness regarding to this natural asset we have residing in our backyards can be spread, urging the protection of these natural and manmade green belts. In an era where deforestation occurs at an alarming rate and destruction for the sake of progress is advocated, such measures to showcase and enforce protection of the forests of Pakistan are highly needed. We continued contributing to its share of efforts to not only preserve the diversity of forests but also to share it with the people of Pakistan.

The event was inaugurated on 10th of July 2012 by Mr. Ali Hassan Habib, Director General WWF Pakistan at Al Hamra Art Gallery. It was open for all where the management; Khalid Siraj Subhani, Jahangir Piracha, Arshaduddin Ahmed, Adeeb A Malik, Rameez Faraz, Nayyar and Favad soomro visited along with Ali Hassan Habib (Director General WWF,Pakistan), Mr. Shabeer Ahmed Rana (Chief Conservator Forests), Mr. Babar Hassan Bharwana (MD Pakistan Engineering Co. Shakeel-ur-Rehman, completed his graduation in Engineering from NED in 1985, followed by a degree in MBA-MIS and a degree in PMP. As a top professional in his field, he has an outstanding 27 years of experience and we are proud to have him at Engro for the last 14 years.

During his career with Engro, he has earned 5 excellence awards for implementation and achievement of several projects, at Plant.

Having worked on as many as 14 projects, the experience of building a new structure was one of his toughest projects, with nearly 100 workers working on a floor with no ventilation,

the task was massive but due to his team’s perseverance and expertise the objective was achieved in a record breaking time of 3 months.

During this project, complete safety of workers was maintained and PRIR of zero was recorded; zero injuries. The task was intricate due to the fact that laborers could only work during the night shift and hence blurry vision made the task even more difficult. With only one cargo available to transport items to the 16th floor, time management was critical. Lack of sanitation was a further hurdle that Mr. Shakeel and his team had to face, but despite all that, they successfully built the new office on the 14000 square feet floor of harbor front in very less time.

Turnaround-2012 was quite a challenge in every literal sense of the word! And for a B&E engineer, it was no less than a nightmare from the very onset. Firstly, it was the ‘inaugural turnaround’ for EPCL that saw the simultaneous shutdown of all operating units, which in itself was fairly staggering!

Actually planned for much later in April, the turnaround had to be pulled back by almost a month due to an operational limitation on the VCM plant. Deciphering the apt time for turnaround saw extensive deliberation to accommodate the pressure from housing imported raw material and product demand from the customers. The B&E record still houses 13 revisions of production plans based on which the final date for turnaround was agreed upon! Also, the decision for an earlier turnaround saw the procurement department work overtime to ensure the availability of material much before the earlier plans!

With the turnaround finally commencing on the 26th of March, the role of B&E engineer was expanded to monitor the progress of the turnaround jobs against the agreed plans. The focus quickly shifted from emphasis on dollars and rupees to hours and days. The rehabilitation of VCM furnace, planned for August 2012, was also undertaken during the turnaround, adding to the pressure of the existing jobs!

In hindsight, turnaround-2012 was quite an experience. Rigorous prior planning coupled with extensive cooperation between departments culminated in an immaculate turnaround in terms of time and budget. The phase was also a testament to the oozing synergy between the Engro Family where experience and expertise from other Engro subsidiaries were widely utilized. With all said and done........BRING ON TURNAROUND – 2013!

Senior Process Engineer

Rehman, who previously worked with the Material Ware house at Dharki, was promoted to the position of Administrator where he plays a significant role in the success of the business.

Besides fulfilling his admin responsibilities, he is also in charge of dealing with state agencies and has played an instrumental part in the establishment of EPCL’s new office where he and his department have worked late hours to ensure its smooth functionality.

Not only was he able to generate excellent functionality of the department but he launched an entirely new workplace, from scratch. He believes that due to his team’s utmost dedication and efforts they were able to complete the hefty task in 3 months and achieved an impossible task, through persistence and consistency.

Zeeshan has been actively participating in the CSR activities and takes keen interest in voluntary and social works. He recently participated in The Citizens Foundation (TCF) career counseling program which provides young individuals with sufficient professional and academic exposure to make correct career choices which otherwise due to the lack of financial support would not have been possible. His experience working with The Citizen’s Foundation in their mentor program reaffirmed his faith in the youth of Pakistan from less privileged backgrounds. He adds that the experience was humbling as he understood the issues being faced by these children in pursuing their professional interests and yet they continued to persevere and have high ambitions, unfazed by the impending hardships.

Being a firm believer in social volunteerism and interaction, he requests everyone to participate in volunteering activities organized in the education sector and other social causes, as no society can prosper merely on government initiatives not supported by the society at large. We can no longer continue living in a manner where we turn a blind eye to these issues and must vow to not observe the change but be the change ourselves.

Fiesta MangoPaying Homage to the King of Fruits As July kicked in, the HR department decided to hold a celebratory event for the arrival of summer with the ‘King of all fruits’, the Mango Fiesta! Employees and their families were invited to the Arena Recreational Center as the event focused on celebrating the family culture in the organization.

The event turned out to be a popular one as there were around 600 people attending between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., and the facilities provided to them included Bowling, Ice Skating, Pool Mania, Arcade Games, Rock Climbing, Miniature Golf (One Shot), PhazerZone, Virtual Bowling, Kiddy Rides and Xbox although most families preferred to go bowling or do children’s activities. A buffet lunch was also included with unlimited supply of mango shakes.

Special acknowledgement is due for the efforts of Syed Muhammad Abdul Rehman (Admin in charge) for arranging high quality mangoes and Aamir Siddiqui for arranging transport and mango shakes for attendees. Without the assistance of the aforementioned individuals, this event would not have been as well as it did. Employees and their families gave a very positive feedback and said that they hoped such events would be conducted again.

Turnaround plays a pivotal role in ensuring reliability, operational continuity and smooth production for any process industry; put simply; “It is an investment in future”, as shared by, Mr. Gawie Venter (GM technology).

Meticulous planning resourcefulness & ingenuity from all interfaces was put in to ensure that complete scope is undertaken within the required time and cost.

Additional resources were introduced through Intelligent Qualification Screening Program (IQSP) ensuring desired skills/ competence.

EPCL turned to Engro fraternity (EFERT, Zarkhez, EVTL, EEL) for effective supervision, the call was generously answered & numbers of skilled technical personnel were graciously provided.

Procurement department put extraordinary efforts ensuring all critical spares delivery on time & major contracts finalization prior to TA start.

A detailed customized package for each interface was prepared, that was well appreciated by all.

Keeping fragile law and order situation of Karachi, on site accommodation was provided to 500+ personnel assigned on critical activities & this paid dividend during T/A.

QUALITY ASSURANCE

This time, special quality assurance concepts were introduced and implemented

Hold point identification for third party audits for major maintenance activities

Sign off on final job scope by all interfaces

Pre screening of additional manpower

JSA and JMS made part of job package for every critical job

Outsourcing of major activities (Replacement of oxy reactor coil & furnace tubes)

Normal planning cycle of such turnaround is 6 ~ 8 months, whereas this first ever integrated site turnaround was planned in less than two months by young team with no prior experience of planning such turnaround.

Living in urban areas, many are still unaware of the basic amenities of life which are still considered luxuries in rural areas. A simple utility such as electricity was entirely absent from the communities residing in the areas of Kalam and Jalband. Through EPCL's hydropower project, such area now has access to electricity which will surely ease their hardships during the cold winters.

The project was inaugurated with representatives of Pakistan Army, local notables, Nazims and beneficiaries’. EPCL CSR and Communications officer, Sarah Aziz along with other representative made thorough inspection of the site area to ensure that the area had been equipped with proper electric channels bringing electricity to the city. Stake holder dialoguing was conducted where detailed briefing related to the potential benefits of the project were discussed and refreshments were served to the attendees, furthermore visits at the residences of local notables were made to ensure that electricity was truly restored in these areas.

Transforming business ideologies. Engineering a better society.

Inauguration of Hydropower scheme

To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.’ – Winston Churchill

Every organization, regardless of its success, instills a sense of continual change and improvement within their business structure to mitigate the risk of stagnation and the end of novel ideas. EPCL understands the significance of this perspective and works towards building and maintaining an atmosphere where change is welcomed.

The Transformation Campaign was conducted in order to convey the importance of transformation, motivation, and change within an organization. It was both an internal and external communication campaign, and took place on July 9th, 2012. The tagline summa-rized the perspective beautifully: ‘Transforming business ideologies; engineering for a better society’ and the campaign was symbolized by a butterfly, to invoke thoughts on metamorphosis, or change for the better.

The head office was decorated with themed branding materials, and complimentary cards were distributed to employees to remind them to strive for change and ‘transformation’ in the years to come.

The Head Office at Harbor Front has been certified by WWF as a Green Office after an audit conducted on 30th of August 2012.

The credit goes to all of Head Office colleagues, relocation project team and to the Non-Manufacturing Health, Safety & Environment Committee (NMHSE) whose Chairman and all members not only endorsed the Green Office initiative but gave it full support.

Green Office is an environmental management program by WWF which encourages organizations to be eco friendly and it aims to reduce an ecological footprint in offices. This program continuously aims to improve energy efficiency, reduce waste, and encourage paper recycling. The plan involves setting indicators & numeric objectives and monitoring energy savings and waste management plans.

Under the ongoing guidance of Mr. Arshaduddin Ahmed as Chairman NMHSE, Engro Polymer & Chemicals Ltd. undertook the WWF Green Office initiative and formulated a team to overlook this project. The Green Office Team includes:

Azfar Ali Khan Muhammad Bilal Ahmed Syed Zaid Bin Rashid Rameez Ahmed Faraz Syed Muhamamd Abdul Rehman

The project started off by developing an Environment Management Plan which would lead the company to reduce its energy & water consumption. It also sought to improve the awareness level of employees and encourage them to be more environment friendly in their habits and consumption.

During relocation to Harbor Front 16th floor office, focus was on procurement & installation of eco-friendly fixtures and fittings which will assist in achieving this plan. These included LED lights being installed in corridors and communal areas which will significantly reduce electricity consumption. All taps installed in washrooms and ablution areas are sensor based which will reduce the water consumption in the office. All paper reams procured for this office are now of recycled paper. The Green Office team has also posted stickers and posters on all workstations and photocopying room to encourage people to reduce their printing and usage of paper. Special presentations and email circulations are also given to change habits and get everyone involved in consciously saving energy, water & paper.

We would like to thank Mr. Shakeel-ur-Rehman, from the Harbor Front project team, for his efforts and belief in the Green Office initiative.

Last but not the least; a special note of thanks is due for Mr. Wajid Hussain Junejo, Admin Manager at Engro Fertilizer, without whose support and constant guidance EPCL would not have achieved this land mark.

Project -Galiat The Drip Base Irrigation System is a revolutionary new manner of irrigating crops and bringing previously declared infertile lands into the folds of productivity. Pakistan being an agricultural based economy, the need for such measures are dire as such initiatives contribute directly to the local and national economy. It employs a main distribution tan with PVC geomembrane lining, collection tanks at various locations and PVC pipes for carrying retained water. It is cost effective in construction and maintenance and specially designed to be a solution for water shortages in hilly areas.

The inauguration ceremony of the DBIS project was a success with considerable amount of participation made by local notables, farmers, community heads, and CBO, World Vision and WWF representatives. The residents of the village and surrounding areas were educated on how DBIS is an effective measure which helps conserve water to preserve our natural resources for a better future alongside promising a more economically stable present. The project would have not been a success without the support of Asia Associates, helping EPCL completes the project. The local residents were grateful to the efforts of the company and other related parties which had invested a great amount of effort in ensuring a greater crop yield, a move that would help the local residents and their generations to come. After a successful launch, several other organizations like CNFA are willing to take the project to a much greater level.

Moreover, dialogue within the community was conducted where members of the local fraternity were asked about the issues plaguing the community and how they could be resolved. Further information regarding DBIS and how it can be used was disseminated amongst the members.

Further projects are underway targeted in the areas of Arwar Village & Rabta (Samandar Katha), a village near Galiyat, Abottabad which will be completed at the end of year 2012.

Inauguration of DBIS

(TCF) ProgramThe Citizen Foundation

Pakistan is considered to have a certain advantage over other nations due to the high concentration of young individuals; however, without the right guidance and educational exposure, the country is losing out on a valuable asset; an asset which can prove to be the only element promising deliverance from the current state of economical and infrastruc-tural decay.

Such an organization with similar perspectives, providing young individuals with sufficient professional and academic exposure to make correct career choices, which otherwise due to the lack of financial support would be unable to, is the Citizen’s Foundation. The issues being faced by these children in pursuing their professional interests were continued to persevere and have high ambitions, unfazed by the impending hardships.

During the mentorship program, the mentees had a one to one counseling session with the mentors about their career plans and personal constraints that may impact their professional goals. The entire discussion was formally documented on predefined forms and was a structured process to maximize benefit. The mentors spoke to the children studying in Class IX and X about their academic interests and individual performance and helped them in career choices. The students were handed over the contact details of professional universities where they could enroll and pursue their areas of interest. Before the mentorship day, the mentors were invited by the TCF team for a preparation session dedicated towards mentor orientation to the process.

I Experience therefore…

Anam Chandani - GTE It is a common belief that a corporation’s primary goal is prot maximization. However when I joined Engro, this belief fell apart – over here safety is the rst priority. We were subject to a month’s training on the importance of ‘Process Safety and Risk Management’(PSRM) under the supervision of highly trained and experienced engineers. This equipped us with enough knowledge to clear the online tests and become certied PSRM engineers.

In contrast with the companies who only claim to oer excellence and perfection, Engro actually delivers what it has promised. In the male dominated eld of engineering, the company

provides equal opportunities to everyone regardless of their gender as well as a healthy environment for women to work. So far, this company has oered me a learning platform, progressive training, a pleasant working environment, and cooperative mentors. I believe that EPCL will keep delivering this and a lot more in the future.

Adil Akbar - GTEI have had a lovely experience working at EPCL! In our classroom trainings, we learn about the core values and HSE policies. Presentations are delivered regarding PSRM modules and this will denitely help me clear my online PSRM test.

Muhammad Faraz Yous - GTEIt all began with Zohaib Sufyan’s call, congratulating me on my selection as a Graduate Trainee Engineer which made me feel on top of the world. Soon after joining, I was provided with a one month classroom training at”Lyceum” after which I was sent to my respective department.

Although I miss the fun I had during the classroom trainings last month, I am really looking forward to the new experiences I will be a part of. I am very grateful to the company, especially the Training department. I would like to sincerely thank Mr. Ali Akbar, Mr. Faisal

Ahmed, Mr. Ali Rizvi and Mr. Waqas-Ul-Hassan for the fantastic exposure and superb trainings.

Hassan BangashCurrently an employee at Synergy, I was appointed account management representative for EPCL in August 2011. As a brand partner, it was essential for me to understand our client and the brand in detail.

Obviously with an organization like EPCL, which deals with PVC, Caustic Soda & Sodium Hypochlorite, it was no easy task to begin with since there are no crash courses in the

engineering and development of such products.

Surprising my own self, I was happy to accept this challenge. I knew working in close partnership with such an esteemed organization would improve and widen the array of my skills. But what was even more surprising was the amount of support I got from the communication team. Clients tend to share basic information and leave the rest to the agency, but not this team. They believe in educating the agency and get involved every step of the way. This practice actually made me ever closer to the Engro family and we worked in close harmony throughout.

As the months went by, we gelled in even more and successfully completed multiple projects of dierent natures such as the "Forest of Life" Calendar, website, Especial & the Photography Exhibition amongst others. Now when I look back, I realize that it was a very rewarding experience - we denitely faced problems but ultimately what matters is that we came out of those issues and thanks to an amazing all around team at EPCL and Synergy, we always came out with smiles on our faces.

E S P E C I A L N E W S L E T T E RInterview‘Life is not a bed of roses’ – this quote appropriately describes the life of Khalid, who spent his life working hard and facing the thorns in his way without expecting a shower of petals at the end. Sarah from Corporate Communications took the interview, so that we could learn more about his personal and professional experiences as well as his empiricism about life.

Even though Khalid studied engineering, he always aspired to be an Air Force Pilot. The thought of working as an engineer did not even cross his mind, he spent his time looking at the sky and imagined being strapped into the seat of an airplane. Air force personnel always impressed him with their charismatic yet authoritative personalities. In terms of hobbies, Khalid enjoys music, travelling, literature and Urdu poetry, especially that written by Ahmed Faraz. He also enjoys spending time with family, and it goes without saying that as a person grows, so do their hobbies.

Dreams and Aspirations:In an attempt to pursue his dreams, after his intermediate studies Khalid applied to become an Air Force Cadet Pilot. However, he was declared medically unfit. Rather than giving up hope, he appealed the decision but due to a ‘heart murmur’ was denied once again. Though downcast that he could not translate his passion into his career, he maintained a positive attitude and years later still feels a sense of excitement whenever he sees a flying aircraft.

About his Career:All dreams never come true, fate has some other plans-this quote has played a vital role in Khalid’s life.

During his adolescence, professional education options were limited and students either opted for pre-engineering or pre-medical. With no interest in medicine, and a FSc. in pre-engineering, the only remaining logical choice was to pursue engineering as a course of study. He had spent his entire life believing he would become an Air Force pilot. With that dream not coming true, he tried to salvage the situation as best as he could. He began to re-think his career goals and ambitions, and found the prospects of becoming a part of the merchant navy enticing. He passed the necessary medical and aptitude tests, and informed his father of his decision to join. Unfortunately, parental influence in choosing careers was prevalent in those days and his father expressed dismay at the choice he made.Left with very few options, he decided to join an engineering college. He got selected at NED and Dawood Engineering, ultimately choosing Dawood Engineering to pursue his education in Chemical Engineering. During his years there, he was very active in student politics and even became an office bearer of the students’ union.

During his final year, he was hired on contract at National Refinery. Once he passed his final examinations, he was asked to stay on as a permanent employee. However, he was asked to sign a retention bond for five years which he was not in favor of, and this led him to resign and look for alternatives.

During his quest to find a suitable alternative, he found a job at General tyre and Rubber Company in Karachi. Soon after he joined, they decided to expand. He was selected and within a month was sent to the U.S. for a training after which he returned only to realize that the company was not fitting for chemical engineers. He applied to various companies in an attempt to find better job opportunities, and received a call from Exxon. He was hired in the position of an ‘Engineer III’ and has been working with Engro ever since.

Joining Engro-An unforgettable story

At Engro, he had challenges in his growth path but had the best supervisors to guide him through and they played a very key role in terms of learning, professionalism, work life balance and managing oneself. For him, the company and supervisors handled his career pretty well because of which he is still here and twenty eight years later talking to us. In terms of personal development early in the career, there were quite a number of supervisors whom he remembers in terms of development. But for him Sadiq Qureshi, the Manager of the ammonia plant played a vital role. A disciplined and professional individual, Mr. Sadiq Qureshi was both feared and awed by the people around Engro due to the degree of professionalism and excellence with which he approached his job. When Khalid was assigned to work under him, the two options before him were that he’d either excel or buckle under the pressure. He says that “I, thankfully, did not succumb to the pressure of my tasks and exceeded the expectations of my peers. If I were to thank one person

in terms of professional development and setting the base, it would be Mr. Sadiq Qureshi.”

A person you remember!“There are instances which can fall under bad experiences.”

When one works in a fairly large organization for almost three decades, one will always have good and not so good experiences and “I am no exception”, Khalid said.

There were occasions during all these years where he felt too low, demoralized and said to himself why is he doing, what is he doing and for what. But soon he realized that those thoughts were mostly emotionally supported as compared to being fueled by a rational reason.

The difficult experiences and stressful situations with few people made him

believe that working with different people and different perspectives is all part of learning and grooming process which all eventually make him a better person, which has turned true.

Lesson learned during your endeavor:

The one thing that his experience has taught him is that “Merit will always triumph.” A person, who has received the right education, has worked hard throughout his career and takes work seriously, will overcome all obstacles no matter what they are. Believing in one’s own abilities and capacities is integral.

Role of Luck:Khalid believes that “Luck does play a role.” It has to do with being at the right place at the right time. However, luck alone will never bring success. One has to work to the best of his abilities and capabilities and pray to God that everything turns out just fine.

Khalid speaking at the seminar

Turning Point of Life:He launched his career with Engro which was then known as Exxon, with an aim to work for the organization for a few years and then move on to other opportunities. But after experiencing the treatment being vetted out to him by the organization, the merit based systems and the focus on personal and professional development; he made the decision to stay. After working with people of diverse backgrounds and competing with professionals who were educated from reputable foreign universities, he realized his own potential and capacity, he came to the conclusion that “The Pakistani education system is not as bad as it is perceived to be.” He did his Matriculation and engineering studies from NED and was performing at par with the alumnus of Ivy League institutes.

It was due to these experiences that he started having more confidence in himself and it is because of these experiences that he is the person that he is today!

Particular ability that made you the CEO of EFert and EPCL:Khalid is of the view that “Being an analytical person and a sort of perfectionist by nature, I have a knack of asking the right questions at the right time. I believe that it is one capability in me that differ me from some other people. However, this habit of mine at times annoys people, thinking that I am trying to undermine them or their work.”

A milestone achieved:The one project he believes that he can never forget is the Amonia, Urea Plant relocation project (PakVen-600) which helped immensely in reshaping the face of the organization. It was a unique and very challenging model and thus extremely risky. He was at a relatively junior position at that time however; the elements of accountability and out of the box thinking were expected from all of them. There was large scale integration of

people from different departments and organizations, all working to make this project a roaring success.

“This PakVen-600 project was so critical that had it not succeeded, Engro Corporation, most likely, would not have existed in the shape and form that it is today. I remember the time while I was the Commissioning Manager of the Urea Plant. We started manufacturing urea but were unable to get the required specifications and, therefore, couldn’t sell it. The organization was on the verge of bankruptcy as cash inflows had ceased due to no sales. We were just piling up off-spec urea and all the open spaces at plant site got filled with it. After unorthodox and out of the box thinking we were able to solve the problem but those were the most stressful few weeks for everyone. Such experiences I still remember as if they happened yesterday.” Khalid shares his experience.

The future of Engro Polymer:The company has faced hardships in the recent past. Such hardships took a toll on the morale of some of the people working in the organization with stress bogging down productivity and people feeling the brunt of it all. His first objective was to ensure the reversal of this predicament and instill a sense of corporate confidence and boost morale. He spoke to the employees, communicated with them and with the support of every one solved a number of problems to the point where he believe the employees have started to become more at ease. He says “Working under such situations and conditions which are conducive to both employee satisfaction and corporate success is where I hope to see the organization moving towards.”

He said: The future of Engro Polymer is bright and exciting. Its business model is robust and time tested. We have had issues with the reliability and operability of VCM plant soon after its commissioning couple of years ago but most of those issues have now been resolved. We have come a long way in this regard and I must acknowledge the relentless efforts and hard work put in by the entire polymer team in particular the manufacturing team,

Going forward, we have plans to make further investment not just to enhance plant reliability but to expand capacity, improve process efficiency and enhance the market size for our products.

Engro polymer as a separate identity or subsidiary of operations:He believes that every organization has its own identity. No business, whether a subsidiary or other should have that identity taken away as that identity defines that business unit for the years to come. Synergy within the business units must be present to align the various corporate and strategic goals, however, corporate identification must always be done keeping in mind the individual and the collective perspectives of the organization.

An out of the box experience:Khalid is an avid traveler and quite connected with nature. He has visited various countries with Canada being his favorite due to the infusion and the beauty of nature in that country. He adds that “However, the vibrancy and the sheer joy that I felt while visiting Brazil is something I cannot put into words. Despite whichever socioeconomic class anyone belongs to, you can see them smiling, dancing, singing and enjoying life in general. That is something I believe I have not seen anywhere else in the places that I have visited. It is the little things that need to appreciate and that will make all the difference in the world.”

Even though Ashar Hussain has left the Engro Polymer & Chemicals Ltd. family, his legacy remains. During his time at the organization, he worked amongst the people-centric environment as the National Sales Manager where he developed a strong bond between the sales department, stakeholders and the administration.

Ashar Hussain started working at PIA in 1979 after graduating from the University of Punjab where he spent 26 years in their Marketing and Sales Department. During this time, he also headed the company’s operations in Spain for three years and in France for four years. He also gave a shot at running his own fusion themed restaurant in Paris for three years which was successful but after these exhilarating experiences, Ashar Hussain decided to tone down and work for FMCGs. He started with Waves, moving on to industrial selling at Engro.

One of his earliest and most memorable experiences after joining EPCL was when he had his first meeting with the former Chairman of APPMA, the head of the most important customers’ association at EPCL. Having gotten accustomed to meeting heads of states and the elite segment of society, it was a surprise for him as the former Chairman came out of his small garage operation, set along the side of the factory, wearing a shalwar and banyan (vest) and covered in dust. Receiving a warm hug from the man, Ashar was glad that he hadn’t dressed in a suit for the meeting.

Discussing the challenges he faced at EPCL, he regarded the prominent project for Sales which was the study, planning and launch of caustic soda and sodium hypochlorite products. He recalls that he had never handled the project of such a magnitude since the products, markets, competition, logistics and global trends were unknown.

Being a self-made man, he negates the concept of luck in making a person who he is. He believes that a person should carve their own fate through sincerity, truth, humility, hard work and compassion. His mother’s words always stayed with him who used to say, “Allah puts us in positions of importance to test us how we behave with others”, and this became his guidance for life. He helped others in difficulties and earned their prayers in return.

He also values the power of motivation, which he believes, can make miracles happen. During his stay at EPCL, he was considered to have the strongest team since he kept them inspired and motivated through group meetings, discussion of issues and giving his team the confidence they needed to do the job well.

Drawing a parallel between the needs and events going on in his life, he feels that Allah blessed him with the best career opportunities as and when they were most needed. When his health was being neglected due to the hard work he did here, Ashar was posted to Paris where he met with a doctor who started preventative treatment of all major

illnesses that ran in his family. Now, he is in good shape at the age of 58.

Ashar’s passionate attitude for professionalism turned him into workaholic and during his first 14 months at Engro, he did not take a single day off, often working for 11 hours straight, even on weekends. He states, “The most important lesson I learnt from life is that one should never be arrogant or think of himself as the smartest person. After joining EPCL, I realized how little I knew and how much I had to learn. Teamwork and involving colleagues and juniors in all complex issues and to appreciate their knowledge was the most important learning experience here.”

On behalf of EPCL family, we are thanking Ashar for having shared his valuable experience with us during his stay at the company. He would be remembered for his belief in achieving success through hard work, truth and humour and always delivering work on time and in the best way possible.

EPCL Sales Team Breaking all RecordsJuly 2012 proved to be a remarkable month for Engro Polymer & Chemicals Ltd. bringing with it another memorable moment that will be marked down in history alongside many other great achievements attained by the company.

Highest ever single month Fresh Orders and Sales for PVC, in the history of EPCL, were achieved during the month of July 2012. Total sales of 15,113 MT along with 20,448 MT fresh orders were recorded, beating the previous record by 2,652 MT or 21%. The previous highest Sales figure was 12,461 MT in the month of June 2009.

The month brought in high PVC sales CP targets for the sales team. For many these targets seemed unattainable at the start of the month but through dedication and untiring efforts, the Sales team was able to obtain the fresh orders required, coupled with good sales and dispatch planning, and of course capitalizing on a very competitive price. Furthermore, a massive conversion from scrap to resin, and new inroads into the government sector were instrumental in achieving this milestone.

This great performance could not have been achieved without the constant support of Business Planning, Logistics, PM&S, Market Development and F&A. Joint efforts, timely actions and support by other departments are also contributors to the successful achievement of the given targets.

Congratulations to the Sales Department, whose team members worked relentlessly in achieving these results through fine planning and perseverance with customers, giving the company another reason to be confident of its people as they proved to stand tall and deliver when tough times came calling.

Looking into the future, we wait for the next great moment that will take us to further heights and once again make us proud to be a part of Engro Polymer & Chemicals.

Such is the story of Nur Muhammad. Living in the village of Jalband, Nur Muhammad longed to see his two daughters get the same education that children living in major cities of the country have access to. Living in a ramshackle two room house, Nur Muhammad works at a general store as a cashier, scratching together enough money to feed his family, often running short before the end of the month, resulting in his wife taking up odd jobs to make ends meet. Life has indeed proven to be hard on this person having suffered the loss of his right leg in the Taliban led insurgent movement in the northern Areas of the nation. He continues to toil at the Bismillah General Store, despite it being the blistering heat of summer or the unrelenting cold of winters. Having clean, running water and electricity is nothing more than just a dream for this man of 30, who given the hardships of his life, appears 60.

The situation seemed to grow bleaker with every passing day as the plague of Islamic extremism spread is tentacles across these areas, enveloping individuals and uprooting entire families. However, Nur was more worried about the impending winters which were promised to be harsher than any other and with him living in a relatively remote area and subsisting on

meager wages; life seemed to have begun to take a severely wicked role.

However, with the assistance of armed forces of Pakistan, EPCL under its CSR mandate embarked on an ambitious project to provide electricity using hydel power to these far flung areas. Setting up two hydel powered units at the villages of Jalband and Kas Kalaam, the installation of these power sources provided electricity to people of these villages, bringing in much awaited development to these remote areas.

One of the greatest threats to this peaceful settlement is the floods which seem to have taken an annual trend. Most of the developmental projects in the area were washed out by the torrential waters and with the impending winters, electricity and the related amenities it offers were the need of the hour. This formed the major objective of EPCL’s initiative to install such projects in Kalaam. With the assistance of hard working individuals such as Nur Muhammad, the project was completed in a timely manner. Such projects, if done elsewhere in areas of need are executed; we may soon see the end of the progress and development disparity.

Nur Muhommad, now enjoys watching his two daughters read books and do their homework from the light of two energy savers that now hang in his living room. He has moved on from being a cashier at the Bismillah General Store to now being a partner at his own business establishment, The New Lucky Star General Store. He now earns enough to send his two daughters to a school operated by a private NGO in a neighboring village. He has bought his wife a sewing machine and together along with the women in the area, they earn additional income by sewing and doing other needlework. He takes his role in assisting in the maintenance of the hydel units seriously despite his handicap and is eternally grateful that they now have this essential utility operating within their midst. In our last correspondence with Nur Muhammad, the excitement in his voice was palpable as he spoke about how his eldest daughter came 3rd in her class in the annual examinations and how he had saved enough money to buy a heater that would prove to be a blessing for his family in the coming winters. He now aims to work hard and save enough money to pay for his widowed sister’s wedding.

MuhammadNur

The amount of technological advancement or the number of records broken does not define an individual or a generation. A legacy is created when a person or an entity devotes entire resources for the betterment of mankind and dedicates all that he can to ensure the benefits of a successful life trickles down to many.

It is difficult to comprehend that in this age where the longevity of a normal human being surpasses those of a decade ago, there are still some people who long to enjoy light at the flick of a switch and have access to clean, running water, where they can watch their children read and write with no disparity between those living far flung areas or those living in the urban centers of progress.

I enjoy learning and with EPCL help now I can study hard and do something for my country.

Annual Dinner and Musical Night

As Engro Polymer & Chemicals Ltd. (EPCL) was approaching the close of a stable year of operations, an evening of rejoicing was overdue. Rising to the occasion, the Company Staff Club took the initiative to organize a Companywide Annual Dinner and Concert for its employees and their families. On twentieth October around six hundred employees and their families gathered for a dinner followed by a musical performance by the Strings group.

Networking and reunion of the Engro family was the hallmark of the evening and EPCL invited guests from other Engro Companies to encourage cross company networking. As

employee families along with children were hosted at the event, EPCL expressed its gratitude to employees’ families whose support is instrumental in the contribution our employees make to the Engro businesses.

The dinner was followed by a spectacular musical performance by Faisal and Bilal from the Strings group. Good humor and music further increased the bonding that EPCL family enjoys as it rejuvenated all guests particularly the young ones who danced away the performance at the lighted dance floor specially created for the occasion. A combination of old tunes like ‘Sar Kiye Yeh Pahar’ and some new

numbers like ‘Hai Koye Hum Jaisa’ took the audience through their memory lanes.

As the evening came to a close, EPCL family left with a reinvigorated attitude and a higher sense of commitment and faith in the Company.

The Staff Club is thankful to all the employees and Company guests who participated in the event and made it a success.

The company bids farewell to Syed Ashar Hussain and Saleem Lallany for their association with EPCL and wish them the best of luck on their future endeavors.

To celebrate their achievements with the company, a 70’s themed party was organized where everyone was fashionably dressed with chic looks, which personified their individual styles. The 70’s themed party was well received

as people could be seen wearing butterfly collars, bell bottom pants, afro wigs, side burns, high-waisted jeans, Hawaiian shirts, large sunglasses and headbands, all this truly brought out the sportsmanship in them and all employees were having a gala time.

Retirement shield was also presented to Syed Ashar Hussain by the CEO, Khalid Siraj Subhani, and the sales team dedicated a

specialized 70’s dance to him, which led the whole crowd to join the dance floor and enjoy till the very end. Furthermore, a token of appreciation was given to Saleem Lallany by his department and marked the end of an amazing event which would always be cherished.
