What’s the right platform for me?
Ask yourself:
• What do my family, friends or colleagues use?
• What content do I want to share and see? Twitter is great for up-to-the moment news, Facebook’s good for online chatting and photo sharing, Instagram is just for pictures and videos and Blogger’s good for longer pieces of writing.

• Am I a geek?You can customise Blogger’s layout and colours and get into its code, but you can’t do much to change Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.
• What do I feel comfortable with?• How much do I want to share?

• Am I concerned about privacy?Some platforms ask for more information than others.
• What are the privacy settings?Do you want to limit your online content to a select few or are you OK with the world accessing your content?

Privacy:
• Check the privacy settings and set them to the level you are comfortable with
• Use strong passwords, keep them secret and change them regularly
• Only accept online “friends” that you know or have similar interests
• Consider turning off geotagging so others can’t track your movements

• Be careful posting about holiday plans
• Avoid putting online data like your address, phone number, email address, schools, daily routine, bank and date of birth that could be used for identity theft or stalking

Financial security:
• Beware of apps that have in-app purchases
• Use a credit card with a small limit for online purchases
• Beware of online scams via email, ads and posts – if in doubt, Google it to find out

Reputation and relationships:
• Don’t post anything that you wouldn’t want to make public or which could ruin your reputation
• Don’t post if your angry or upset• Consider workplace social media
policies • Even if you delete a post, it maybe
too late – it could have been seen, shared or screen captured

post hurtful or offensive content• They usually hide behind the
anonymity of the online environment

about you, it’s about the troll• Block or unfriend them• Report troll to social media platform,
which can suspend the troll’s account
