Kennedy Wire Rope & Sling Company
Kennedy Wire Rope & Sling Company began in May of 1979
with eight employees and a 500 square-foot rented space on
Lexington Boulevard in Corpus Christi, Texas. At that time, the
management and employees had a combined total of 125+ year’s expe-
rience in supplying wire rope to oilfield businesses. Many of Kennedy
Wi re Rope’s first employees had previously worked at E.L. Beardon Com-
pany, another wire rope distributor.
By 1981 Kennedy Wi re Rope had outgrown the small space, and pur-
chased an 18,000 square-foot building on five acres on Flato Road (pre-
sent location). The number of employees quickly doubled, and the larg e r
location allowed for some much-needed equipment upgrades. Kennedy Wire Rope was now able to handle larger
jobs and began product testing in-house. A spooling truck was added allowing for on-location work. Eventually
an addition was added to the building’s warehouse, expanding it to 24,000 square feet.
By 1997, space was once again a problem, and plans were made to purchase the adjoining five-acre lot. A sec-
ond 24,000 square foot building was erected, allowing for expansion of the nylon and chain departments.
In February 1998, a second location was opened in San Antonio to better serve customers in the central Texas
area. The San Antonio store, located in the Interstate Business Park, cre-
ated six new positions, bringing Kennedy’s staff to nearly fifty.

3 Basic Hitches
Straight: A sling is used to link a lifting hook to its load. The entire lifting capacity of the slingmay be used, but cannot be surpassed. To keep the load from rotating, a tagline is used. When aspreader bar or more than one leg is used, the entire assembly must be balanced equally amongthe slings.
Choker: A hitch whereby the sling wraps around or “chokes” a load. The diameterof the load is critical in determining the capacity of this hitch. Choker hitches havereduced capacity compared to straight or basket-type hitches. The “choke” mustbe tight and secure prior to the lift.
Basket: A “cradle”-style hitch where the fittings or eyesare attached to the lifting device such as a crane hook.The effect is to increase capacity from a straight lift andprovide greater load bearing and stability to a lift.
S ling safety can never be over-emphasized. These basic safety steps should alsobe observed:
■ NEVER exceed rated capacities.
■ Horizontal sling angles less than 30° should NEVER be used.
■ Failure to follow the care, use, and inspection of a sling could result in severepersonal injury or even death.

Sling Safety
Inspection CriteriaCited below are removal criteria established by the OccupationalSafety and Health Administration and the American NationalStandard Institute Safety Standard.
1. OSHA 1910.184 - Criteria for Removal from Service.Synthetic web slings shall be immediately removed fro mservice if any of the following conditions are present:
a) acid or caustic burnsb) melting or charring of any part of the sling surfacec) snags, punctures, tears, or cutsd) broken or worn stitchese) distortion of fittings
2. ANSI B30.9-9.5.6.2 - Possible Defects. A sling shall beremoved from service if any defects, such as the following,are visible:
a) acid or caustic burnsb) melting or charring of any part of the sling surfacec) snags, punctures, tears, or cutsd) broken or worn stitchese) wear or elongation exceeding the amount recom-
mended by manufacturerf) distortion of fittingsg) other apparent defects which cause doubt as to the
strength of the sling should be referred to themanufacturer for determination.
While most of the foregoing standards are quite specificre g a rding some removal criteria, a certain amount of judgment isinvolved in others. The issue of wear to the sling body, the selvageof webbing, and to sling eyes creates the greatest amount ofcontention. We recommend that any exposure of the RED GUARDwarning yards is sufficient cause to remove a sling from serviceand destroy it.
Extending Sling Service Life1. Provisions for storing synthetic slings are an effective way to improve the life of a sling. Storing slings away
from dirt, abrasives, or contaminants serves to maintain the optimum lifting capacity.
2. Cleaning slings to remove dirt, grime, abrasives (such as sand or caliche) will help to prolong service life. Thesecontaminants wear the fibers and reduce their strength.
3. Slings should be cleaned with a mild soap. Capacity tags must be legible. After rinsing the sling, it should behung to air dry.
N O T E : P rolonged exposure to direct sunlight detrimentally affects synthetic fibers, reducing capacities overtime.

When a choker hitch is drawn tight at an angle of less than 120 degrees, the Choker Hitch Rated Capacity shown inthe sling Rated Capacity Tables must be reduced to allow for loss of Rated Capacity. In controlled tests, where theangle was less than 120 degrees, the sling body should always fail at the point of choke when pulled to destruction.Allowance for this phenomenon must be made anytime a choker hitch is used to shift, turn, or control a load, or whenthe pull is against the choke in a multi-leg lift.
Although many slings may be considered standard merchandise, many of the lifting devices described in thisHandbook are custom made after receipt of the order to specific dimensions and customer re q u i re m e n t s .Therefore it is essential that each order provide the following information to guide manufacturing:
ALL ORDERS MUST SPECIFY:1. Sling Type Number and Stock Number as given in this catalog.2. Length of sling, measured as shown below.3. Width of sling body.4. Webbing material—Nylon or Polyester.5. Description and placement of any wear pads.6. Protective Coating, if an optional coating is desired.7. Description of end fittings for slings where a choice of fittings is offered.

Angle of Bridles
The horizontal angle of bridles with 3 or more legs is measuredthe same as the horizontal sling angle of 2-legged hitches. In
this case where a bridle designed with different leg lengths resultsin horizontal angles, the leg with the smallest horizontal angle willcarry the greatest load. Therefore, the smallest horizontal angle isused in calculating actual leg load and evaluating the rated capac-ity of the sling proposed.
Determining Lifting Load Capacity of a Sling
As the horizontal angle of a slingd e c reases, the load on each legi n c reases. The effect is the same
whether a single sling is used as abasket, or two slings are used witheach in a straight pull, as with a 2-legged bridle.
Anytime pull is exerted at an angleon a leg—or legs—of a sling, theload per leg can be determined byusing the data in the table at right.P roceed as follows to calculate thisload—and determine the rated cap-acity re q u i red of the sling, or slings,needed for a lift.
1. Divide the total load to be lifted bythe number of legs to be used. Thisprovides the load per leg if the liftw e re being made with all legslifting vertically.
2. Determine the angle between thelegs of the sling and the horizontal.
3. MULT I P LY the load per leg (ascomputed in No. 1) by the LoadFactor for the leg angle being used( f rom the table at right)—tocompute the actual load on eachleg for this lift and angle. The angleload must NOT exceed the ratedsling capacity.
Thus, in drawing #3, (sling angle at60°):
1000 ÷ 2 = 500 (Load Per Leg is avertical lift)500 x 1.154 = 577 lbs. = ACTUALLOAD on each leg at the 60°included angle being used.
In drawing #4 (sling angle at 45°):1000 ÷ 2 = 500 (Load Per Leg if avertical lift)500 x 1.414 = 707 lbs. = ACTUALLOAD on each leg at the 45°horizontal angle being used.

and eye protection. The eye openings are 90° to the
sling body for tighter choker hitches and easy vertical
and basket hitch rigging.

Polyester and nylon webbing comes in two grades ors t rength ratings. Coatings are available for longerservice life and wear resistance. Wear pads can be
p rovided to minimize the effects of rough surfaces or angleswhich can abrade or cut the sling fabric.
Polyester and nylon webbing should not be exposed tot e m p e r a t u res exceeding 180°F due to softening of (oractual melting of) the fibers.
Consult the table below with re g a rd to the effects ofchemicals on synthetic web slings.
A neoprene coating can be added for additionalp rotection from elements and hazards which can re d u c ethe service life of synthetic material. This procedure costsextra and you should consult your distributor.

Coatings Improve Handling Characteristics
Both Nylon and Polyester webbing used in all slingsreceives a special treatment in the final stages of
looming which promotes cohesion of yarns in the fabric,p rotects the finished webbing from penetration bym o i s t u re and dirt, and helps reduce abrasion.
In addition, an optional coating of Neoprene may beapplied after slings have been fabricated. It is available
at extra cost, to give slings specific handling andperformance characteristics.
N e o p rene increases stiffness of the finished sling,which in turn, increases abrasion resistance andminimizes absorption of fluids and dirt. Neoprene alsoi m p roves gripping action on the load.

Sling ID TagsEach sling we produce carries a tag which provides a re c o rd of thetype and stock number of the sling, as well as the vertical, choker, andbasket hitch rated capacities for the sling. Tags are leather, with a deep
hot brand. Each tag is designed toresist tearing or detachment fromthe sling.
Every sling must have a tagattached to it. If it doesn’t, youshould remove the sling fro mservice immediately as per OSHAand ANSI B30.0 requirements.
Wear PadsOptional wear protection pads are standard only on Type 6 and7 slings. If you intend to use any other sling in a damagingsituation, please specify wear pads when ordering.
Padded slings include a nylon and polyester buffer designedespecially for this type of application. Wear pads are also availablein synthetic leather, which tends to be more economical andstiffer than regular leather or regular sling body material. Pleasespecify the desired material when ordering.
We stock 2 types of wear pads:
Regular: P rovides an extra layer of material, which has beensewn at the wear points on either one or both sides of the slingbody or eyes. Multiple layers are available.
Sleeve or Tube: Protects both sides of the sling body. It can beeasily slid across the sling. It remains stationary as the slingstretches while lifting a load.
Red-Guard® Wear WarningsRed Guard web features inner, load-bearing yarns that carry over80% of the load. When the protective outer layer of webbing isworn away or damanged, red yarns of the inner layer are exposedindicating it’s time to immediately remove the sling from service.Notice in the picture to the left, that the warning yarns are visibleon the cut end, but are not visible on the surface of the webmaterial.

The Ratchet Snugger provides a fast, one-hand way to snug down loads—on pallets, in vans and trucks, baggagecompartments, shipping containers, and aircraft. Tension adjustment is infinite. Locks securely by pressing downon the ratchet handle.

Effects of
Wear & AbuseFar too many web slings have to be discarded prematurely
simply because abusive and careless work habits causedi r reparable damage. Following are examples of damage
typically caused by abuse or misuse. Regardless of whether asling shows damage from abuse or normal wear, the overridingrule in all cases is that sling eyes should be cut and the slingdiscarded immediately whenever damage is detected.
TENSILE BREAK—Characterized by a frayed appearance at the point of failureor damage. Such damage is caused by loading the sling beyond its existingstrength. The example pictured was pulled to destruction on a testing machine.
CUTS—A cut is easily identified by a cleanb reak in the webbing structure or fibers, and usually results from the slingcontacting a sharp object or unprotected edge of a body or eyes of a web sling.Red Guard warning yarns are woven into webbing of many slings to provide awarning when a serious cut has ocurred. Cuts from contact with sharp cornersduring lifts can often be avoided by using wear pads on the sling for protectionof the fabric.
CUT & TENSILE DAMAGE—The sample shown illustrates a typical shop failurein which a sling is used after having received a cut by a sharp object along oneedge of the sling body. The cut severely reduces lifting capacity, and continuedusage will result in the sling breaking much as shown. Such a failure often occursat a level far below the Rated Capacity of the sling.
ABRASION DAMAGE—The most common abrasion damage occurs either whena sling slips while in contact with a load during a lift, or when being pulled fromunder a load. Abrasion is characterized by frayed fibers on the surface whichexposes the “picks,” or cross fibers, of the webbing that hold in place the load-bearing (lengthwise) fibers. Further abrasion at this point will expose the Red Guardwarning yarns to signal the inspector or sling user that serious damage—and lossof lifting capacity—has ocurred. Any damage to load-bearing fibers should beviewed seriously.
ACID DAMAGE—Although Polyester webbing has considerable resistance to certain acids, any contact with strongacids should be avoided. Nylon should never be exposed to any acid. Metal fittings on slings should not be exposedto any acid or corrosive liquid.
Example A— The damage shown to this Nylon webbing ocurred when sulfuricacid (such as used in an automobile battery) was heated to 100°C (212°F) anddropped on the webbing. The charring of surface fibers seen here is typical ofacid damage. The deterioration shown will continue over time and severe l yaffect webbing strength.
Example B— A piece of Nylon webbing was immersed in sulfuric acid at roomtemperature for three weeks, resulting in the significant damage shown. Notethat fibers are softened and swollen, and the entire fabric is grossly distorted,virtually destroying the webbing. Precautions should be taken to never storeslings where they may be exposed to acid fumes which can be as destructiveas liquid), or to possible contact with acid.

T hese quality, high capacity slings are engineered to provide labor-saving convenience with all types of liftingdevices. They are available in one- or two-ply construction, in webbing widths from 2” to 12”, to provide ratedcapacity for virtually any size boat normally lifted by an overhead device.
Rigged in basket hitches, pairs of standard slings offer total lifting capability to 53 tons per pair, and greater lifts canbe achieved by rigging additional slings, or pairs, in the lift.
Both Polyester and Nylon provide outstanding resistance to rot and mildew, since neither fiber supports bacterial orfungal growth, and neither is adversely affected by immersion in water—either fresh or seawater. All loose pin hard w a reis plated for corrosion resistance.

Care, Use and Inspection for Round Slings✔ Never use these slings at a temperature above 200°F. If the sling is exposed to temperatures above 200°F, immediately
remove and destroy so that no further use is possible.✔ Power Lift slings should never be used above the rated capacity.✔ Do not expose these slings to sharp or rough edges.✔ Power Lift slings should not be in contact with fumes, vapors, sprays, mist or liquids of alkalis, aldehydes, ethers or
