Hello, Eskomos. There’s no doubt that most of you have had plenty of “screen time” in your lives. From watching tv, gaming, texting, reading, participating in social media, and doing school work, spending time looking at screens has been some- thing that you’ve experienced, to some degree, for most of your life. That’s a 21st Century reality. This year, you have the potential for more screen time with the addition of iPads at school as personal learning devices. This ad- ditional time with technology certainly has its benefits. That’s why we are doing it, but it also comes with chal- lenges. Today, I’d like to address the challenge of re- petitive strain (on your eyes, head, neck, hands, back, and shoulders) that can come from poor tablet usage ergo- nomics. If you don’t know the word, ergonomics, learn it today! Ergonomics is the scientific study of people’s efficiency (and well-being) in their work practices. I’m referring to your work practices related to using technology. Below is what ergonomics experts tell us about working with tablets. Keep these things in mind as you work on your iPad in class and at home (and in the rest of your life of smart phone use, video game playing, and Netflix watch- ing). 1. Posture is really important. -When in class, at a desk, or table (even at home), be sure to sit up straight and relaxed. -When sitting, try keeping your knees, hips, and elbows at 90 degrees. -Keep your feet resting naturally and evenly on the floor. -Try to avoid (as much as possible) slouching while sit- ting in a chair leaning against a wall. Likewise, avoid lay- ing down while using your device. 2. NOTE: Enclose check or money order for $35($25 per book plus shipping, handling & sales tax)

Make a Present Of Esko’s Past If you’re in a quandary about Christmas gifts for out-of-town friends or relatives, the Esko Historical Society might have the solution: “Esko’s Corner, An Illustrated History of Esko and Thomson Township.” Society representatives say they’re gratified by the community’s response to the 387-page hardcover book, but they’re also hopeful of an uptick in out-of-town sales prior to the holidays. “We’d like to think former residents would be surprised and pleased by the depth and quality of the book,” said editor Davis Helberg. “Whether it’s early settlement, the Finnish connection, farming, schools, road names, churches, businesses, sports, the 1918 Fire—almost anything of note that’s occurred in the community in the past 150 years—we believe there’s something of interest for anyone who’s ever lived here.” Since the book became available last January, more than 1,500 copies have been sold. Although many have been shipped elsewhere, the vast majority of sales have been through local vendors or at various special events. Helberg said out-of-town orders placed through the society would relieve the buyers of trying to find the right packaging and making a trip to the post office. The book, replete with some 160 historic photos and nine maps, was produced by an all-volunteer committee and published by the historical society. It was designed by Tony Dierckins of Duluth and printed by Bang Printing of Brainerd. To have the book mailed, use the order form shown here and send $35 ($25 per book plus $10 for shipping, handling and sales tax) to Esko Historical Society, P.O. Box 83, Esko, MN 55733. If you have questions, contact Helberg or society president Ken Nynas. In Esko, books are also available at Esko Spur Self-Serve, Esko Liquors, Eskomo Pizza Pies, Finn & Feather Hair Designs, A Shear Thing, Hair Designs by Sherri, Hammarlund Nursery, Widdes Feed & Farm Supply, Barnes Care Assisted Living and Wirtz Service.

Weather ClosingThe winter season is already upon us. It is time to revisit what the school dis-trict will do on days that conditions make it difficult to open and run school. When it has been decided that school needs to be closed we will send this information out through our instant messaging sys-tem. The message will then be communicated to the local TV stations and WKLK radio out of Cloquet. The message will be posted on our school web page too.WDIO 10KDLH 3KBJR 6Fox 21WKLK 96.5 FM and 1230 AM School cancellations can happen at any time and you are encouraged to keep your instant messaging system up-to-date. Make sure the message is going to a number or email address that you are able to check throughout the day. If you have any questions about the instant messaging system please contact Bernie Ozan at 879-4673 ext. 606. There is always the possibility that you won’t receive the informa-tion that school is closing. This is especially true when schools close unex-pectedly for utility issues and parents aren’t watching for a closure. You are encouraged to develop a family emergency plan for your student if they were to go home and you aren’t there for them. The family emergency plan could include family members to call, neighbors to go to for assistance, additional keys or ways to get into the home safely and additional measures to ensure your child is safe if they return home and you are not able to be there. Plan for the unexpected.

-Keep your screen at a height that doesn’t make you strain your neck up or down or sideways.-Use your ‘kickstand’ to adjust your iPad height on your desk at school or home.-Don’t read with your iPad in your lap. -If you just have to lay on the floor or use your device on your couch or bed, be creative in propping up your device so you don’t have to strain your head and neck (and do change your position frequently.)

3. Lighting makes a difference. -Adjust the lighting in your study spaces so that your screen doesn’t glare. -This might mean being away from lamps and windows or changing your device angle. -Our Griffin Survivor cases are anti-glare which helps too. -Go into your settings to turn off ‘auto-brightness.’ This forces you to better tailor the lighting on your device to your individual comfort, the time of day, and your background light.

4. Sound is included in healthy iPad ergonomics. -Limit your use of headphones to when you really need them. -Keep the volume on your devices below 60% of the max when us-ing headphones.

5. Use your common sense. -Take regular breaks from your iPad (and other devices) especially if your eyes feel tired or you feel like you’re getting a headache. -If you’ve used your iPad at school a lot on a given day, limit your evening screen time. -Take a break from your screens before trying to go to sleep. Many people have a tough time sleeping when they go straight from screens to bed. -Enlarge your screen if you’re having a hard time reading a small font size. Don’t strain. - The purpose of all of these ergonomic tips is to do little things over a long period of time to reduce your repetitive strain. Small, positive habits make a big difference over months and years of time with your technology.

Dear Parents:

The best way to register for classes is to completely fill out the registration form from the paper or the after school club flier. Attach your fee and mail it to the Community Education Office at P.O. Box 10, Esko, MN 55733 or have your child give the envelope to their teacher. You can also register online at www.esko.k12.mn.us. Click on the Community Education/Class Registration tabs. Your child is registered if we do NOT call you to say it is full. Please plan on your child attending unless you hear from us.

Any changes in class dates and/or times will be communicated via e-mail. Please be sure we have all updated information. E-mail is our preferred method of communication as we are able to generate a message to several people quickly. Watch your e-mail for class updates. If we do not have an e-mail address on file, you will be contacted via phone, or a note sent home with your student.

Your child’s teacher and Cool Kids staff will have a roster of all kids in each after school club. We ask you to send a note to the teacher stating that your child will be staying after school for the club. After school, the students will line up by the cafeteria, be checked in by a staff member, have a snack, and then be brought together to their class.

If your child will not be at a scheduled club, please inform the teacher and call the Community Education Office at 879-4038. These multiple checks and balances are there to keep your child safe. Unless stated otherwise, pick your child up at the East Entrance (by playground #6) of the school. Thank you!

NEW CLASSES!

The First 72 HoursWill you be able to provide for yourself and family after a catastrophic event? I know, you are saying “come on Mark, that is just a bunch of paranoid, di-saster prepper, zombie wanna-be nonsense,” but waiting until you are in the middle of a crisis to prepare for one is a pretty bad technique. My uncle and I were joking around about zombie movies one day and during that conver-sation he made a pointed observation: “The real zombie apocalypse is what happens to average folks after they go three days without the internet, cash machines, or power.” So yeah, while a zombie apocalypse or an alien inva-sion is good material for Hollywood, the real question is are you going to develop your plan while you and your family are in the middle of a crisis or would you rather be prepared for The First 72 Hours…Age Req: 15 + olderCost: $25.00Instructor: Mark Laine02/23/2015 6:00PM - 9:00PM Esko Schools – Theater

How Not To Be A VictimThis course questions how you view your surroundings, be it while you are in public, your vehicle, or in the privacy of your own home, in order to highlight the common sense steps a person can take to protect themselves and/or their family. The Great Bedtime Story

Pajama Drive

Dear Parents,

It’s time for the annual Scholastic Reading Club Great Bedtime Story Pajama Drive benefitting Pajama Program, a nonprofit organization that provides new pajamas and books to children in need—especially those living in group homes, shelters, foster care, and orphanages.

Since 2009, caring classrooms across the country have risen to the challenge and donated nearly 350,000 pairs of new pajamas. The Scholastic Reading Club has more than matched those numbers with nearly 700,000 new books donated to Pajama Program.

Our class wants to be a part of this drive so that we can help make a better bedtime for these children. Together we can help the Great Bedtime Story Pajama Drive reach even more kids with pj’s and books.

If you and your child are able to participate, please have your child bring in a new pair of pajamas to school by .

Here are some simple guidelines for the pajamas: Pajamas must be brand-new. Pajamas in all sizes are needed—from newborn to adult. Pajamas must be in complete sets or nightgowns. Pajamas in children’s sizes must be manufactured as pajamas—this ensures that they are flame-retardant and safe.

Thank you for helping us share the gift of a good night’s sleep and a sweet bedtime story.
