29th Annual EOS/ESD Symposium is Fast-approaching

Continued from page 1 The ESD Association’s annual Sympo-sium, the world’s premier event focused on electrical overstress (EOS) and elec-trostatic discharge (ESD), takes place at the Disneyland® Hotel in Anaheim, Cali-fornia, September 16 – 21, 2007.

The event includes:

Technical SessionsTutorialsWorkshopsAuthor’s CornersExhibitsPlenary SessionWelcome ReceptionAwards BreakfastProfessional and Technical Women’s ReceptionAttendee LunchESD Association Annual Meeting

The technical sessions offered this year provide more than 50 presentations from international authors. Papers that will be presented address issues such as De-vice Testing, ESD-RF Design Consider-ations, Factory/Materials, System Level Testing, and much more.

Workshops are interactive ses-sions that promote discussion and the exchange of ideas. This year’s symposium offers ten workshops, which begin Tuesday evening, and also occur Wednesday afternoon and evening. Some of the work-shop session topics for this year in-clude: ESD Control and Design for Extremely Sensitive (Class 0) De-vices, Cleanrooms ESD Ionization Guidelines and Considerations, Fu-ture of ESD Standards and System Test, Protecting High Frequency Circuits and much more.

Attendees can further the informa-tion gained at Symposium by taking advantage of the Authors’ Corners, which provide access to technical paper authors for discussion. This also provides the opportunity to network with the largest collection of individuals who work in the fields of EOS and ESD management to be found anywhere.

In addition, this year’s featured ple-nary speaker Allan Johnston, a Prin-cipal Engineer at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, will present “Space Radiation in Advanced Semiconductor Devices” on Tuesday, September 18.

The symposium includes a large collection of exhibitors from around the world present-ing products, solutions, services, and pub-lications serving professionals in the EOS and ESD fields. Exhibits are open to the public and do not require symposium reg-istration.

Other events include the Welcome Recep-tion, Awards Breakfast, Professional and Technical Women’s Reception, Attendee Lunch, and the ESD Association Annual Meeting and Luncheon.

The general chair of this year’s Symposium

is Donn Bellmore, Universal Instruments Corporation; the vice general chair is Gianluca Boselli, Texas Instruments; and the technical program chair is Horst Gieser, Fraunhofer IZM. The EOS/ESD Symposium is sponsored by the ESD Association in cooperation with the IEEE. It is technically co-sponsored by the Electron Devices Society.

The ESD Asso-ciation is gearing up for the Second Annual Interna-tional Electrostatic Workshop (IEW), which takes place May 12 - 15, 2008, in Port d’Albret, France.

ESDA successful-ly hosted the first Annual Interna-tional Electrostat-

ic Workshop this year at the Stanford Sierra Conference Center in South Lake Tahoe, California, where nearly 100 professionals gathered for four seminars, two keynote ad-dresses and numerous technical sessions, poster sessions and discussion groups.

Next year’s event promises to be just as invigorating and educational as this year’s.

With this issue of Threshold, our organization is inviting authors to submit presenta-tions for the upcoming event. Please see pages 5 and 6 of this issue for details regard-ing presentation topics, the incredible venue, and the large group of people or-ganizing this event. Please note that the deadline to submit papers is November 26, 2007.

We will keep you informed as details unfold via our website, www.esda.org. Be sure to visit the site regularly for updated information.

At the beginning of this year, I informed readers that ESDA would increase educa-tional opportunities. I am pleased with the success and proud of the quality program

that was delivered at the 2007 IEW. I look forward to a very successful second event. Our talented volunteers who coordinate this effort will do a magnificent job for our organization, and most importantly, for our members p

Q & A ColumnTechnical inquiries received at ESDA head-quarters are directed to [email protected]. If you would like to submit a technical ques-tion to be presented in the newsletter, please send an email to [email protected] and type Q & A Column in the subject line.

Question: I am hoping that someone can answer this question for me; is there any type of ESD trainer’s certification available to teach the fundamentals to our ESD Co-ordinator?

Also, could you tell me please, when wear-ing an ESD smock that has long sleeves with snaps at the end, if a person is wearing a ¾ or short-sleeved shirt, can they push the ESD smock sleeve up or roll it up a bit to be comfortable, or should it remain down and snapped? I know that there are smocks

available with ¾ and short sleeves so I ask with this in mind wondering if as long as the clothing underneath is not exposed at all, could the ESD smock sleeve be rolled or pushed up?

Answer: We offer what we call ESD Pro-gram Manager Certification. This is a 10-tutorial set that people complete (generally takes two years) followed by an eight-hour written exam. We have offered the test for two years now*. There are a total of 13 Certified ESD Program Managers out there now (out of a group of about 25 or so that attempted the test). Please review the ESD Program Manager information on our website at www.esda.org and click on Certification. If you are interested in getting some training done quickly to get a person started, perhaps one of the consulting com-

panies shown in our Buyer’s Guide on the website could offer a custom package for you. There are several that do this all the time.

Generally, companies that use smocks in their ESD Control Program allow the sleeves to be rolled up as long as the street clothing is not exposed. I have seen this written into many ESD Control Program Plans.

*Please note that ESD Association will of-fer the ESD Professional Certified Program Manager exam at the EOS/ESD Sympo-sium in Anaheim, California, on September 21, 2007. Contact headquarters at 315-339-6937 or [email protected] to register or for more information.p

2008 IEW Call for Papers

The 2008 International ESD Workshop (IEW) takes place in Port d-Albret, France, May 12-15, 2008, and will focus on robust design strategies and ESD/EOS testing of state-of-the-art integrated circuits, advanced semiconductor system on chip (SOC) and system in package (SIP) applications. For this second annual workshop, device im-munity issues originating from electromag-netic interferences (EMI), a great challenge of complex electronic systems, are included as an additional topic for discussion. Fur-ther, IEW also welcomes papers on ESD is-sues encountered in MEMS devices, which are now rapidly entering electronic applica-tions as wide ranging as automotive, medi-cal and consumer systems. Through the technical presentations solicited here, as well as invited seminars, un-refereed post-er sessions, discussion groups and special interest groups, a unique and informal envi-ronment is provided for understanding and sharing ESD technology. All workshop ac-tivities will take place in a relaxed setting that promotes an atmosphere of interactive learning and helpful discussions. The Inter-national ESD Workshop is closely aligned with the EOS/ESD Symposium for collab-orative conference activities. The second IEW offers the unique chance to exchange ESD related know-how on an international level in Europe. This compliments the es-tablished biannual European conferences on ESD like EOA/ESD/EMI Workshop in France and ESD Forum in Germany.

Oral Presentation Submissions

Abstracts for oral presentation (two pages including figures) must clearly present the data and the significance of the results. Please email the abstract including title, au-thor affiliation and email address to [email protected] before November 26, 2007. The abstract should be in pdf (Adobe® Acro-bat®) format. The technical program com-mittee will announce the abstract selection status to individual authors on or before

January 7, 2008. Final presentations for the workshop in PowerPoint® format must be received by April 14, 2008. These Power-Point® slides will be included in the Presen-tation Handout along with a CDROM that will be distributed during the Workshop. There will be no formal report published. Due to an agreed alignment through the ESD Association, presentation of your work at the IEW will not preclude a subsequent, but more detailed submission, to the EOS/ESD Symposium. For any questions please contact the Technical Program Chair, Horst Gieser ([email protected]).

More Information

Please check our web page at http://www.esda.org regularly for updated information on the Workshop. As it becomes available, information on the full technical program including the seminar topics, the keynote speaker, the poster sessions, as well as the discussion groups and special interest group topics will be posted. In addition to the peer-reviewed presentations, attend-ees will also have the option to present non-peer-reviewed posters at the Work-shop. If you have any questions about the Poster sessions please contact the Posters Chair, Gaudenzio Meneghesso (gaudenzio.

ESDA Offers Online Course Regarding CDM ESD Testing

The ESD Associa-tion will offer an on-line course titled “The Good, The Bad, and the Improvements in CDM ESD Testing” on Tuesday, Novem-ber 20, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. EST (10:00 a.m. PST).

“The purpose of this online training is to present the improved changes in the CDM Standard, and teach the basics of CDM

stress testing as required by the CDM Stan-dard,” said Leo G. Henry, Ph.D., course instructor. In addition, the need for proper equipment/tester qualification, calibration and periodic verification before the actual stress testing is performed on the devices will be presented. It will be shown how the CDM stress testing requirements combined with proper stress testing procedures will lead to reliable qualification of product.

ESD Association offers ESD Facility Certification

The ESD Association Facility Certification Program evaluates a facility’s ESD program based on industry standard ANSI/ESD S20.20, which was updated in 2007.

Facilities that choose to become certified during 2007 will use the ANSI/ESD S20.20-1999 standard as the basis for their certification. In 2008, companies will have the choice to be-come certified to the 1999 or 2007 version. In 2009 and beyond, facility certifications will be based on the ANSI/ESD S20.20-2007 version only. Both versions of this standard will be available for download at www.esda.org until the end of 2008.

The AuditThe ESD certification audit focuses on all the key elements of a good ESD program: Documentation, Training, Calibration, ESD Control Element Se-lection 7 Function, Purchasing (ESD-related con-tracts), Non-conforming product, and documenta-tion control.

Typically, audits take up to two days. The ESD Association’s certification program is based on one facility or several buildings in nearby proximity that are a part of the same line of business with a com-mon management. Multiple locations require addi-tional audits. Facilities must undergo the complete audit annually to be recertified.

RegistrarsThe audit is conducted by an ESD Association certified registrar. Each certified registrar employs staff that has been trained and certified by the ESD Association. A list of certified registrars is maintained at www.esda.org. The ESD Association will continue to add new registrars as they are certified.

If your company’s registrar is not certified with the ESD Association, please have the regis-trar contact the Association for materials and information about becoming certified.

Education

September/October 2007

Yes, ESD engineers know that Florida is famous for ESD lightning research – but did we know that ESD semiconductor re-search is a field of interest in Orlando? In the Spring of 2007, the University of Central Florida (UCF) served as a host for the ESD on Campus talk. Professor J.J. Liou of UCF, who is also affiliat-ed with Zheijang University, served as the host faculty member.

Today, University of Central Florida is one of the fastest growing cam-puses in the United States. Fueled by the growth in the Florida tourist industry and local Floridians, engi-neering and research buildings are opening today with new offices, labs and courtyards. With the boule-vards, and palm trees visibly being added to the campus plan, the UCF students nicknamed the university “UCF a.k.a. Under Construction Forever.”

University of Central Florida, which is situated in Orlando, Florida, is a participant of ESD research and consulting for semiconductor design and ESD testing for corporations - corporations such as Intersil, Harris, and other aerospace industry (e.g. NASA), which are very interested in electrostatic discharge (ESD) phenomena.

An ESD lecture was provided on campus. Graduate student ESD researcher Slavica Malobabic, a student of Professor J.J. Liou, organized and coordinated the tour and lec-ture, which was attended by over 100 grad-uate students and professors – this was one of the highest attended ESD lectures on a university campus in the U.S. This was or-ganized by the IEEE Electron Device/CPMT

Chapter and the School of Electrical Engi-neering and Computer Science at Univer-sity of Central Florida in Orlando, with help from the IEEE UCF Student chapter.

Students from all over the world were in at-tendance due to the diverse populations of graduate students at UCF, with a mix of Flo-ridians, Armenians, Serbians, Egyptians, Chinese, Lebanese, to Jordanians. The ESD research group was a blend of stu-dents working on ESD software, power de-vices, analog applications, and ESD testing. Collaboration continues with ESD research with Intersil, Harris, and Analog Devices. Additionally, there is university-to-university collaboration. Students from Hangzhou, China (at the campus the ESD on Campus

Is it a big surprise to see ESD R&D bor-dering Disneyworld®? For those who worked in this ESD field, there should be no surprise! p
