02 WelCome to the eSCP InternatIonal WorkShoP In leuven !
Dear Colleagues,
The emerging enterhaemorragic E. coli reminds us of our vulnerability for infections. Two years ago we had the fear for the H1N1 flu epidemy. Opportunistic infections like TBC can complicate the use of TNFalpha antagonists. Systemic mycoses remain life threatening as infected patients are mostly in a bad condition. MRSA is always looking around the edge … Enough examples for more than contemplation.
Whether in the hospital or in the community: infections come as such or they complicate existing conditions. We try to master them on a rational way, in accordance with the mission of ESCP: ... developing and promoting the rational and appropriate use of medicines, medical products and devices by the individual and by society … However, when we have to take into account too many variables, some of them with an emotional component, we may tend to forget about rational guide-lines and rules. On the one hand over-reacting and moving away from rationality can happen from the professional side. On the other hand second thoughts about costs and side effects may disturb the opinion of patients. Anti-vaccination and anti-antibiotic feelings can hamper prevention and treat-ment. Especially in case of long-lasting treatments compliance and adherence become important for a positive outcome. On top of that, resistance of micro-organisms against the medicines available keeps us vigilant. To what extent guidelines and development of new antimicrobial agents may solve the problem? What to do if the preferential treatment seriously interacts with other important medicines?
‘Patients, infections and the clinical pharmacist’ can be considered as pattern to be used for a nice lacework as you have probably already seen in Flanders. We want to weave this piece of lace in Leu-ven from 30 May to 1 June 2012. It takes only 15 minutes from the international airport of Brussels to the city of Leuven. We will welcome you on the campus ‘Gasthuisberg’ of the university hospital. Plenary lectures, interactive working sessions and poster presentations are planned during daytime. In the evening there is the enjoying atmosphere of an historical city, since 1425 a home for thousands of students. At least from the infectious side, a beer on a terrace remains safe and pleasant restaurants guarantee an affordable price-quality balance.
See you in Leuven!

abstract submission deadline: 5 march 2012Abstracts must be submitted on-line via the workshop website: www.escpweb.orgAbstracts sent by mail, fax or e-mail will NOT be accepted.Only abstracts related to the topic of infections will be considered for review. Please follow the instructions on the screen. For questions regarding the on-line submission process, e-mail: [email protected] selection of abstracts for oral and poster presentations will be made by the Scientific Committee in April 2012. The presenting authors will receive an e-mail with the result of the review and the Scientific Committee’s decision on the abstract by mid April 2012.
abstract policy and regulationsWith the submission of an abstract to the ESCP 2012 workshop, the first (presenting) author: accepts responsibility for the accuracy of the submitted abstract (please proofread the
abstract carefully prior to submission!); accepts to be the contact person for all correspondence about the abstract and inform co-
authors about its status; confirms that all co-authors are aware of and agree to the content of the abstract and
support the data presented; indicates clearly in the submission, and later also mentions on the poster, if the material
was presented or published elsewhere prior to the meeting; identifies any conflict of interest (e.g. through involvement with a pharmaceutical
company) in the abstract, the poster and the presentation; releases the copyright to ESCP and gives permission for the abstract, when selected for
presention, to be published in the ESCP 2012 abstract book as well as on the official ESCP website and in the International Journal of Clinical Pharmacy – IJCP.
Guidelines for writing a structured abstractA badly written abstract will distract from the quality of the work and this may result in the work not being accepted for presentation. The abstract must convey the important information, which will eventually be contained in
the full paper or presentation. The abstract must be intelligible and understandable when read (i.e. precise, clear and
rigour). The abstract must be written in proper and understandable English. Before printing or typing the abstract body make sure that you do not exceed the number
of 350 words permitted. A structured abstract should not include illustrations, figures or tables.

abstract format The title of the abstract should be brief, specific and informative (max. 160 characters). No more than 10 co-authors can be listed. The body of the abstract can be max. 350 words. Drugs should be referred to by their approved (not proprietary) name. Undefined abbreviations should not be used. Scientific measurements should be in SI units (except blood pressure in mm Hg). Statistical methods should be defined and referenced if not in common use. The number of patients or subjects studied should be clearly stated. The abstract should be structured in such a way as to include the following sections:
1. background and objective: the question or problem addressed by the study must be clear
2. Design: the basic design of the study, statistical method 3. Setting: the location of the study 4. main outcome measures: the parameters used to judge the results in order to fulfil
the study; for a new treatment the variables on which the efficacy/effectiveness is tested. 5. results: the description of the results should be brief and precise. Only representative
data need to be provided. Avoid phrases like "Results will be shown". 6. Conclusions: the brief conclusion(s) should follow logically from the objective, main
outcome measurers and results of the study and abstract. The following are some of the common reasons why abstracts are referred for correction or rejected by a scientific committee: inappropriate title; lacking in rigorous study design and/or methodology in a research abstract; the objectives and conclusions are not clear; conclusions do not follow from the objectives and results; questionable statistical analysis; inadequate information which does not permit the abstract to be understood; inadequate data which does not permit the abstract to be evaluated; not relevant to clinical pharmacy; lacking in novelty and originality or having predictable results; the submission does not conform to requirements for the layout and presentation of
abstracts; bad use of the English language, leading to misunderstandings.
Please visit http://www.escpweb.org/cms/node/145 for the ESCP guidelines for scientific presentations.

Within 48 hours of submission, the presenting author will receive an e-mail to verify that the organiser has received the abstract. This confirmation of abstract receipt is NOT a notice of acceptance.
In case the confirmation from the organiser is not received, the presenting author should contact [email protected] within one week of submission of the abstract.
Once the abstract is submitted, changes, corrections or rewording are not possible. Careful typing and proof-reading are essential as the abstract will not be edited or corrected by the organiser and will appear, if accepted, as submitted.

The authors of oral communications do not need to present a poster of their abstract.Poster presentation: Abstracts that have been selected for presentation in poster format will be displayed on poster boards for the duration of the workshop. The authors will receive the guidelines for oral and poster presentations upon acceptance of their abstract.
Withdrawal of abstractsAbstracts submitted for presentation at the ESCP 2012 workshop can be withdrawn until 20 April 2012. European Society of Clinical Pharmacy (ESCP)The European Society of Clinical Pharmacy (ESCP) was founded in October 1979 during the 8th European Symposium on Clinical Pharmacy in Lyon, France. The objective of the Society is to develop and promote the rational and appropriate use of drugs and medical devices for the benefit of individuals and of society. Each year the Society organises an Annual Symposium, usually held in October. At this Workshop, papers in the field of pharmacotherapy, pharmacokinetics, clinical practice and various other subjects related to the aims of ESCP are presented.
