    EDITORIALNot all fairy tales begin

with Once upon a time, forthere are a handful of fairy talesthat begin with If I were elected,I promise

The latter openingphrase is often heard this time ofthe year as the national electiongets nearer. It is seemingly sadthat most part of the country hadexperienced such ever afterwhich ends unhappily. But whatis truly saddening is that many ofour countrymen are going

through extreme poverty up tothis very moment amid the fairytale plot started by some of ourelected officials.

Speaking of unfortunateevents, later this fourth week ofMarch, the Movie and TelevisionReview and Classification Board(MTRCB) had rated two shortfilms by acclaimed indie-film di-

Escolario would like to apologize to the UST COMELEC for the wrong

information we had published on page 7 of Escolario, Tomo 3 Bilang 1 which

was about the poll automation demo held here in the university. The said activity

was organized by the UST Election Advocacy Committee together with UST

COMELEC and not bythe Students Organization Coordinating Council (SOCC).

As promised, we republished the article on page 10 applying the necessary

    correction.

rectors Brillante Mendoza and Jefrrey Jeturin for their works Ayos Ka andGanito tayo ngayon, Paano na tayo bukas?, respectively, with big X. Thetwo films received such rating not because these depict obscenity or nuditybut because these show the truth about the country and its dirty politics. They reasoned out that the films are undermining the faith and confidenceof the people in the government. However, they could never deny that it isthe truth and the people are subjected to such poverty, crimes, corruptionand false hopes. They want to acknowledge the only truth that is convenientfor them. It is very alarming that the government had already grasped thecarefree world of show business, and the state of tyranny has escalatedthese much.

The power must be brought back to the people, and the upcomingMay 2010 election is the right time to do that. It is nice to know that we haveplenty of choices this time around. However, we must still be decisive. Wemust know beyond what they are saying and look deeper into their charac-ter. After all, seeking the truth is what we, Thomasians, hold for.

fourth annual educationalfield trip entitled "Threeand one Plus Fun: Tara

    Lets Bagets na naman!"

last February 7, 2010.The said event was

    spearheaded by the

    C o m m u n i t y

    D e v e l o p m e n tCommittee, headed byJeyo M. Leoncio and

Suzanne Kaye M.Dolorito, with some of

the officers and membersof the organization. The

beneficiaries of the project were the Gradesone to three pupils

    ofNorthville 4B MarimelSubdivision, Marilao,

    Bulacan. This is inaccordance primarily

    with the organization's

    objective -- to promoteeducational developmento f t h e s t u d e n t s .

Meanwhile, the primaryobjectives of this project

    are: 1) To help the

    educational developmentof the students of

    Northville 4B MarimelSubd., Marilao, Bulacan

by exposing them to places where they canlearn things beyond whatthey can gain in the four

    corners of their room, 2)

    to develop camaraderie b e t w e e n t h eorganizations members

    a n d i t s p a r t n e r

    community, and 3) to p r o m o t e t h e

    organizations advocacyregarding environmental

awareness among the participants throughscience activities and

    experiments.

    A f t e r t h ebrainstorming of officers

    of the association for the

said event and theapproval given by theOffice for Student

Affairs, and with the helpfrom the Office forC o m m u n i t yDevelopment, they were

    a b l e t o p r e p a r eeverything: from the

reservation of the placesincluded in the tour to

the coordination with thecommunity's leaders. Thechosen destinations were

La Mesa Eco Park andthe National Museum.

As planned, the participants from the

community were takenup from their place, andthey were pretty ready

    when the officers arrived

in Marilao. As a result, the management was

    easy. In fact, the actual

number of participantsincreased at that momentbecause there were really

many kids wanted to jointhe activity. They wereaccompanied by twoelders of their locality.

Arriving at the La MesaEco Park, one of the tour

    guides oriented them.Then, a mini-program on

story-telling, puppetshow, bracelet makingand others was held with

the beautiful view of LaMesa Dam by the

officers, which excitedthe interest of the kids.

Next, they took thelunch. Afterward, theywent to their final station

    - the National Museum.

As they were strollingaround the museum, theorganization's manpower

    explained the different

educational things foundin it. The travel only tooktwo hours. Lastly, the

kids were accompaniedback to their home.

    " A n s a y a ! S a n alinggu-linggo ganito,"

said one of the kids.Aside from the learningthey acqu i red , a

    remarkable memoryabout this wonderful

experience will alwaysstay with them for the

    rest of their lives.

"The activity wastiresome, consideringthat the kids were Grade

1 to 3 pupils. But then, itwas also a very fulfilling

    experience, that at least

in one whole day, weadded happiness to their

    lives," said the projectheads.

In next few years,Becarios de Santo Tomashopes to continueundertaking this kind of

    activities to contribute in

STRAIGHT FROM THE ADVISERMARIA CARMELITA C. COLOMA

PRESIDENT S NOTERAJIV ELDON E. ABDULLAH

I warmly congratulate all the Offi-cers and Staff of Becarios de SantoTomas for choosing to be advocatesand campaigning for the environ-ment together with all the scholars ofthe University of Santo Tomas in ourGeneral Assembly last January 24,2010.

I am proud to be part of thiscause and would like to share the

challenges that the campaign posesto all Thomasians.

The underlying principle of thatgathering is to make scholars awareand think of ways to contribute inpreserving the gifts of Mother Natureand shed light about the importance

of each ones role in rebuilding ourplanet.

In our present time, where envi-ronmental problems and climatechange are the most critical andmost mainstream of our global prob-lems, a challenge is urgently callingus to respond.

I believe that stimulating the con-science of Thomasian scholars inthis field is not enough, rather, it isthrough the determination in taking

action inspired by their CatholicChristian faith and Thomasian valueswhere help and change can be done. The test posed to us by climatechange and environmental problemsthat we are facing today requireseffort and an awakening of con-

sciousness and of conscience needsto be embedded, sustained and in-grained in our everyday life. Let usalways keep in mind that our planetand our environment is not only anextension of our lives but the life thatwas given us to us by God, wherewe all belong and live as one com-munity.

Together, as one community ofThomasian Scholars, let us unite inaddressing the challenges facing us

and find solutions by applying ourintellect to service the common goodwith optimism and hope. Let us pro-tect our home the Earth, so that itmay continue to house love, com-passion, faith, understanding, andfriendship.

The universitys academicyear has seen much. More than athousand student activities havemanaged to compromiseschedules with AH1N1, Ondoy anda bunch of other events that hasshaped (or misshaped) not only theThomasian Community but thewhole nation inevitably.

    This year as well, Becarios

has seen much. From the FirstGeneral Assembly, BOboTO TO!Boses ng Totoong Tomasino, tothe Scholars Forum, Truth andConsequence: Awakening andBuilding a Thomasian EarthWarrior; the Christmas GeneralAssembly, PASKOlar and itsCommunity DevelopmentExtension Program and theOutstanding Thomasian ScholarAwards 2010; the Fres-ko: TheFirst Step, a seminar for the new

members of the organization andTranscend, the Career Seminar forstudents on their penultimate andgraduating year; the communitydevelopment projects with Northville4B: Iskolars ng mga Scholars Year IV;What You Need to Know: Basic LifeSupport and First Aid Seminar; theeducational field trip for the kids of 4B,Taralets Bagets; from the LanyardProject to the Scholars Mass; thedifferent tie-up projects: BotongTomasino; Pintig, an exhibit of modernFilipino champions and heroes;Makibata; the Apprenticeship Program,Sinugdanan: Tikas. Tibay. Tatag.; MootPoint, the peer tutorials; and the verything you are holding right now, theEscolario.

To whom much is given, muchis expected. (Luke 12:48)

With all of these, what hasbecome of the Thomasian Scholar?Who is the Thomasian Scholar? Unlikewhat the world has been used to, this

question is in no need of animmediate answer. In fact, it mightnot even demand for one. What itsimply asks is for us to reflect. Think.Search.

In all things we do, purposeand meaning precede the actualdeed. The movement for what is justand ultimately good does not seemagnitude nor count frequency; itonly discerns sincerity and passion.

It isnt too much for us to giveback and pay forward. We pursue ourown careers and fight our ownbattles, but is it too much to fight forothers and to pursue for them? WhatIm trying to say is that much havebeen done for us, shouldnt we dosomething in return?

After reading this, the fact ismost of us will go back to our ownlittle spiral of much; so, I leave youwith the 10-2 sentence that hasrecurred to me even in spirallingtimes: If it is to be, it is up to me.

vote, one must simply shade the ovalbeside their candidates names.

Poll automation aims to have a

more convenient way of counting votes

to get faster election results. It also aims

to get rid of election dilemmas such as

    vote-buying, ballot snatching, and flying

voters. The old ballot boxes of the old

system will be abandoned in exchange of

    the new ones- the PCOS.

    The PCOS

The new system of election will

use the PCOS or Precinct Count Optical

Scanner. Attached under it is a ballot box. There will be one PCOS unit per

clustered precinct. This machine is made

to count votes and takes a digital capture

of the image (the ballots) and records it

in a camera. The ballot box to be used

    would actually be transparent. Invalid

ballots, which may be duplicated, photo-

copied, or simply ballots not meant for it

would be detected by the machine.

    FAQs

What if there are printing problems?

    There would be an election

management system which is responsi- ble for the proper alignment of the bal-

    lots.

    How about hacking?

Hacking is only possible if you

have access on the system. The ma-

    chines are protected from unauthorized

access for they are sealed and guarded.

Moreover, hackers will run short of time

to hack the system for it will take count-

less codes to break for one precinct.

Also, the machine will be offline the

whole election day. It will only be online

for two minutes, during the transmissiontime.

    Internal hacking?

The system is not dependent on

    the COMELEC. Besides, electronic

count could always be verified since the

    ballots are inside.

    What if the machine fails?

    There will be a replacement

protocol within two hours anywhere in

the country. If ever the machine fails,

there would be no failure of elections,

    only failure of automation.

    Indifference was the greatest

crime of all, our very own Assoc. Prof.

Cristina M. Castro-Cabral pointed out in

her opening remarks for the event.

Assoc. Prof. Cabral stated that schools

should not isolate themselves in the hap-

penings outside the campuses; ratherstudents must be involved in the occur-

rences in the community and in the na-

tion as a whole. In line with this, UST

endeavors to make the coming elections

significant to each of the students of the

University, as well as build up a fertile

ground for a conscious youth involve-

    ment. With profound discernment

among the youth and student leaders, we

could surely make the Philippines a bet-

    ter place.

    Indeed, a small difference can

make a big change. It is in our hands, itis now our generations turn, to change

the old system. Our role in the auto-

mated electoral system is not only to

guard our votes, but most importantly, to

inform ourselves and others, and to be

involved. We could do this through reg-

    istration and through voting because

these are the only ways for us to make a

difference. As what Mr. Bueva said,

The automated electoral system will be

successful if we make it work. Let us be

    aware and remain vigilant.

In line with the upcoming elec-tions and the Universitys desire to

    strengthen student awareness on auto-

    mated electoral process, the UST

    COMELEC, together with the UST

    Election Advocacy Committee had a

demonstration of the poll automation to

    the event entitled BoTo: BoTong

Tomasino held last Sept 25, 2009 at the

    UST Seminary Gym.

Invited to speak about the ad-

vantages and to give light to the process

of automated elections were Mr. Ric

Bueva, an Ateneo law student and mem-

ber of the advocacy committee for

    LENTE (Legal Network for Truthful

    Elections); Mr. James Arthur Jimenez,

    Comelec spokesperson, education and

    information director; and Mr. Miguel

    Avila, technical support manager of

    Smartmatic/TIM.

    Manual vs. Automated

    Meanwhile, Mr. Jimenez com-

pared and contrasted between the old

and new systems of elections. In the old

or manual system of elections, the ballot

was a long strip of paper which has the

names of positions to be voted. To vote,

one must write the names of the candi-

    dates beside their intended positions.

However in this kind of system, voter

intent is not understood clearly. On the

other hand, the new system or the auto-

mated election gives importance to voter

intent for the new ballots would contain

pre-printed names of the candidates with

ovals faced opposite their names. To

    Matuto

Unti-unting pinahihina ng tindi ng init

ng panahon ang sistema ng aking katawan.

    Dahan-dahan nitong sinusunog ang resis-

tensiya sa sakit. Kaya naman ako ngayon

ay inuubo, laging sinisipon, at payat na

    payat.

Idagdag mo pa riyan ang mga proble-

mang nagpabagsak ng tuluyan sa dati kong

    nakatindig na pangangatawan. Problema.

Init. Sakit.

wan. Wala siyang hugis at porma. Kung

meron man, siya kaya ay isang diwata?

Saan ko siya makikita? Matagal kong pi-

nagnilayan ang kasagutan sa mga tanong

na iyan. Hanggang sa isang araw, matapos

    Amidst various indications of

industrialization prevalent in oursociety, we students must be able

    put environment as our foremost

concern. Treeless forests, im- proper segregation, and garbage

along the streets & riverbanks, all

add up to the causes of unhealthy

environment we all live in. Allthese things are taken for granted

and most of us neglect to see the

fact that they have been terribly

affecting our ecosystem. And theresults? Flood. Diseases. Death.

So how could we promote a

healthier environment? As stu-dents, most importantly as schol-

ars, we must uphold a proper

mindset- gearing towards thegoals that would contribute for

the common good. If we think of

having a healthy environment as a

healthy investment, would weever think twice in doing the right

    thing?

Once we have invested ourknowledge, time and effort in

    protecting and developing the

    natural resources, positive

    returns of investments wouldsimply come:

    1. Health

    Planting more trees

    would help remove the gaseous

    air pollutants. Cleaner air could

mean us being safer from vari-

    ous types of diseases like

    Asthma, COPD (Chronic Ob-

    structive Pulmonary Disease),

    Cystic Fibrosis, etc. Moreover,

    we could also avoid water-

    borne health problems and

    chemical contaminations.

The Env i ronment i s our I nvestment AYANA THERESE B. DE MESA

    2. Homes

Thousands lost theirhomes during the recent storms

and floods, but if we practice

    proper disposal of trash, then

    we would surely avoid blocked

    drainages and passageways of

water systems; if we go green

and plant, water would be ab-

sorbed by the trees; thus, there

would be less flood and nobody

would lose their homes due toflooding.

    3. Loved Ones

    Not only that we were

    able to protect ourselves but

    also protect our family and

    friends from the possible conse-

    quences of an unhealthy envi-

    ronment.

    4. Studies

    For students, the atmos-

phere that would be more con-

    ducive for studying would be

that which has a better ambi-

    ence- fresher air and cleaner

milieu, in contrast to the envi-

    ronment crammed with pollu-

    tion.

Various ways on how to deal

with pollution have been taught tostudents, we however lack moti-

vation to go on with the chal-

lenge. But if we have the percep-

tion of environment as a lifelonginvestment, then we would have a

more positive response to the en-

    vironmental problems.

ang mga taon ng pag-iisip at pagtatagpi-tagpi ng mga iyon ay na-

tagpuan ko ang kalikasan sa tunay niyang porma at natutunan si-

yang kausapin at pakinggan.

    gailangan.

Malalaman mo. Makiramdam ka lang. Makiugnay ka lang.

Return to a land called Paraiso, a place where a dying riverends. No birds dare fly over Paraiso. No space allows them to en-dure, the smoke that screens the air, the grass that's never there. And if I could see a single bird what a joy! These are the fewstarting lines from the Ryan Cayabyab song called,Paraiso, and is originally sung by the group SmokeyMountain. Paraiso was the very first song I composedfor the group Smokey Mountain. This is the very themesong of that group named after what used to be a gar-bage dump in Tondo, a quote from one of his inter-views for Gawad Kalinga.

The lyrics speak of juxtaposition between the envi-ronmental condition situated in the midst of the garbagedumpsite, and the paradise that the poetic persona isthinking of. A great vague impression of irony is ex-pressed in the song! The young scavenger considers thatthe kind of land where he lives in and where he gets hissource of food for survival, despite of environmentalabuses, is still a paradise.

From this paraiso, he is seeking some help to makea stand to be understood, though he is very much deter-mined that his land will someday achieve understandingand some reverence from the rest of the world. As he

wishes for some birds to appear in the sky, he is hopingto be like them. He wants to fly as birds do, becausebirds give him encouragement to dream, and hopes tostill live with pride and dignity. As reflected from thelines, Paraiso, help me make a stand. Paraiso, take me by thehand. Paraiso, make the world understand. That if I could see asingle bird, what a joy! This tired and hungry land could expectsome truth and hope and respect from the rest of the world. Mr. Cadded it is an inspirational song that I had dedicated notonly to marginalized folks but especially to young peoplewho have hopes and dreams of a better future.

Truly, the song moved many of us. And this con-

tinuously instigates many people, as it is used as thetheme song for the Ilog Pasigs rehabilitation advocacy.Paraiso, as a song of hope and inspiration, is softly whis-pering in our hearts, and perhaps, in our souls to dosome changesto keep our Mother Nature a paradise oflife, and more importantly, to stop our wrong and unfairdoings which deteriorate, destroy, and make Her re-sources extinct great changes that may bring greattransformations for the betterment of some of the Filipi-nos way of living today and tomorrow.

To help scholars transcend beforefacing realitys battlefield, Becarios de

Santo Tomas (BeST) tried to bring out the

best in each Thomasian scholar through thecareer seminar entitled, Transcend:

Reinventing the Professionalism theThomasian Way held last February 21,

2010 at the AMV-College of Accountancy

    Multi-purpose Hall.

Attended by 3rd-5th year scholarsin their corporate attire, the seminar started

with an opening song, Go the Distance,

played on violin, followed by an opening

prayer, and then opening remarks from the

    organizations VP for Internal Affairs.

Six speakers were invited to share their

knowledge on how to be the best on the jobinterview. The first speaker was Mr.

Immanuel Jay Avelino, a journalismgraduate from UST and currently the

    Human Resource Manager of JobsDB

Philippines. According to him, a job

applicant should think that he (applicant) is

the best person for the job. To add

confidence to this personal mantra, he

shared tips on how to properly answer

interview questions and gave the frequentlyasked questions in an interview.

The next three speakers were Mr.

Dennis Arapeles, Ms. Orange Erazo and

Prof. Van Ang. They were placed in an open

forum where they answered the common

dilemmas faced by fresh graduates and on-the-job trainees applying for a job. To

summarize their discussion, the forum was

entirely about the six essential steps to job

search process. They said that it is essential

to remember the equation: STRENGTH=Competence + Comfortability to be

    successful and confident.

    Meanwhile, Mr. Benjamin Jarrod

    Reodica of the Human Resource

Department of San Miguel Corporatontaught the scholars how they would

    effectively sell themselves to employers

through giving their resume. Mr. Reodica

shared the five essentials of resume writing.

He discussed the difference between aresume and curriculum vitae and gave the

different types of resume. According to him,

a resume must be clean and brief (1-2pages)and must have a prominent career objective.

The last speaker was MaamLalaine Lachica, guidance counselor from

the Faculty of Arts and Letters. She tackled

about power dressing and gave guidelines

on how men and women should dress in theworkplace. According to her, applicants

should dress for the position they want to be

in and that they should stick to conservative.

After the talks, a workshop was

conducted to see if the participants learned

from the tips given by the speakers and also

to check the details that need to beimproved. The speakers were stationed at

different places in the AMVs multi-purpose

hall, where they had mock interview with

the scholars. The seminar ended with the

closing remarks of our new CSC President

and co-scholar, Leandro Santos II, which is

about how our Thomasian three Cs helps us

    achieve success the Thomasian way.

Be Brave Enough. A mock interview weredone during the Career Seminar to test the

guts and wits of Thomasian Scholars beforefacing the harsh world of professionals.
