SMART RAILWAY OPERATIONS. CASES. AUTOMATED TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS

FRMCS (Future Railway Mobile Communication System) is thefuture worldwide telecommunication system designed by UIC,in close cooperation with the different stakeholders from the railsector. The new system is a successor of GSM-R that lacks thecapacity to transmit the volumes of data needed todayAlthough the railway supply industry has guaranteed continuedsupport for GSM-R until 2030, a new one has to be preparedand rolled out in a test mode before the end of GSM-Rsufficiency.A new system should empower the railway industry to better

leverage the potential given by modern communicationtechnology. Unlike ERTMS, FRMCS will decouple applications, services and transport to allow independence and transportbearer flexibility.

SMART RAILWAY MAINTENANCE. CASES. CONDITION-BASED AND PREDICTIVE MAINTENANCE

DESCRIPTIONCondition-based maintenance is a maintenance based on the monitoring ofthe condition of the railway components, by comparing real-time conditionvalues of the observed parameter against critical parameter threshold.

Predictive maintenance incorporates condition-based monitoring and is based on a forecast of future condition of a railway component using advance analytics with real-time conditions data, historical data and future usage estimation (using artificial intelligence and machine learning).

Digital exchange can be used for various purposes and under best conditions cover all these needs:1) planning of international transportation;2) pre-informing on cargo (freight train) arrival and its key parameters;3) tracing the cargo (freight train, wagons, containers) and adjustment of the time of

procedures;4) acceleration of border crossing procedures and transportation in general;5) decrease of the impact of human factor resulting in time and cost decrease and

higher resilience of international transportation. 345 345

JOINTINSPECTIONS

Improved coordination and joint border inspections/controls at border crossings, organized between railways and regulatory agencies (e.g., Customs, border security and immigration, transport, sanitary, phytosanitary, veterinary, food safety and other inspections).

Transportation time decrease, transportation price decrease, debottlenecking of border crossings.

BENEFITS

Single stop inspections at joint border crossing is a solution where only one common border station between the neighbouring countries is designated as a joint border control checkpoint. The arrangements on joint border crossing station are normally part of bilateral agreement that details formalities for organization of railway processes and control procedures (e.g., customs, sanitary, food safety, veterinary, phytosanitary inspections.

Transportation time decrease, transportation price decrease, debottlenecking of border crossings.

Transportation modelling is a smart decision-making tool which allows: transportation planning (for infrastructure, operation, technologies and other

issues); setting up investment and development priorities; testing new routes, services, charging schemes and solutions; cross-testing planned changes in railway sector against macroeconomic

conditions and their changes.

Decision-making based on objective mathematical formula without engagement of human factors and subjective preferences.

Choice of priority projects within limited budgets.
