Welcome to ESASO

1 | ESASO | A vision of collaboration

General ophthalmology is a well-recognised medical specialisation in all European countries, but Master’s degree programmes to provide further training and edu-cation are not yet fully developed. Consequently, ophthal-mology graduates wishing to specialise need to find an institution or hospital that can offer them facilities for research or on-the-job training. Others may want to pursue a fellowship programme, but these are usually only available to US graduates.

ESASO was founded in 2008 to address both this challenge and the specific further education needs of training and practising clinicians, drawing on the skills of colleagues worldwide and the support of various universities. It seeks to facilitate the dissemination of new and effective oph-thalmological learning and expertise through a dynamic combination of in-depth exposition of topics and direct face-to-face training, where experts show students how to deal with practical situations and problems.

The School is based within the Università della Svizzera italiana (USI), Lugano Campus, Switzerland. In 2010, ESASO opened its Campus in Asia, the continent where more than half of the world’s blind people live and one where postgraduate training is practically non-existent.

ESASO offers theoretical tuition as well as practical trai-ning, and has devised a detailed programme for the first few years featuring an expert team with recognised clinical and teaching experience. The theoretical curriculum and surgical practices can be completed at the same university and those students who finish their education will receive their degree from that university.

The School‘s activities cover all subspecialties such as surgical and medical retina, cornea and refractive, cataract, glaucoma, uveitis, oculoplasty, pediatry and strabismus.

We hope that ESASO will grow into a leading institution in the field of ophthalmological training for the benefit of all eye patients.

Prof. Borja Corcóstegui President Scientific Council

Mission

ESASO aims to improve the clinical and surgical practice of specialists in ophthalmology in order to promote and enhance professional skills. Its objective is to provide oph- thalmologists with postgraduate education and hands-on training from an internationally renowned faculty.

The School promotes scientific research, organises mee-tings and seminars, and manages publications, all with the purpose of improving scientific knowledge within the ophthalmic community and thereby benefiting eye care and cure for patients.

Dr. Giuseppe Guarnaccia Executive Director The basic training system envisaged

by the Bologna Process is currently offered by universities, but there is an almost complete lack of effective post-university training across Europe.

ESASO Campuses

ESASO LuganoESASO is headquartered at the Università della Svizzera italiana (USI), Lugano Campus, in the canton of Ticino in the south of Switzerland. The University was founded in 1996 and occupies a privileged geographic position with access to an efficient public transport network, including proximity to the international airports of Milan.

This young institution is open and receptive to enriching new initiatives. It is free to put forward strategies to meet the challenges confronting modern humanity: the new technologies, society, the environment, and the economy.

The University combines academic training with accredited qualifications, and boasts steadily rising student numbers, growing success in research and an international mix of students, research and doctoral assistants, and professors.Today, over 2,700 students from 70 countries are enrolled at the USI in Lugano.

The Campus buildings host offices for faculty and staff, classrooms, labs accessible 24/7 and a canteen. It is a place not just for studying, but also for cultural exchange.

ESASO SingaporeESASO’s successful launch led to the concept of ESASO Asia. Singapore was chosen as the venue for the new cam-pus because of its status as the “Switzerland of Asia”, with a well-developed academic system, a central location, good infrastructure and facilities, and political and social stability.

The Asian Campus is located at one of Singapore’s most prestigious private medical establishments: the Camden Medical Center, on Orchard Road in the heart of the city. It features state-of-the-art lecture facilities with internet and network connections, as well as specialised console tables that can be converted into wetlab workstations. The Board of Directors has appointed Dr. Adrian Koh as Director Asia.

ESASO-EURETINA CertificationESASO has been appointed by EURETINA to organise certification courses in several fields of ophthalmology, thereby ensuring consistency and high quality in both clinical practice and clinical trials. The certification inclu-des theoretical and practical guidance to • technicians• optometrists• residents, and • ophthalmologists

Educational Programmes

Educational ProgrammesProgramme courses at ESASO are taught by a distinguis-hed international faculty. The medically oriented subjects are lectured by renowned practitioners invited for each specific domain.

ESASO offers three programmes, each leading to a sepa-rate certificate:

1. Students who wish to attend only single modules receive a certificate of attendance.

2. Students who complete all five modules receive the Diploma of Specialist Superior in Ophthalmology (DiSSO), which is equivalent to the Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS).

3. Students who complete all the modules plus a one-year fellowship programme at one of a number of prestigious institutions receive the Master of Advanced Studies in Ophthalmology (MAS).

ModulesEach module has the same structure. ESASO conducts regular surveys after each module to guarantee quality and steadily improve the programmes.

The Module consist of: a total of eight days of personal preparation and classes/labs, assisted and coordinated by the respective faculty members.

Fellowships: General Principles

Students working towards the Master of Advanced Studies in Ophthalmology (MAS) participate in the fellowship scheme for eye specialists after completing the DiSSO.

The ESASO Fellowship is an advanced specialist training programme in which the recipient can acquire a thorough, in-depth understanding of the specific subject and, accor-dingly, proficiency in the exercise of the clinical-surgical profession.

Objectives of the Fellowship ProgrammeThe Fellowship consists of a grant and a research project which is supervised by Prof. Stanley Chang, New York. Students must publish their findings. The Fellowship curricula are planned in consultation with accredited de-partments of ophthalmology to ensure that the prescribed objectives are achieved.

InstitutionsFellows’ advanced training is conducted at one of the specialist teaching hospitals or university centres that have entered into a partnership agreement with ESASO and agreed on a training programme in a specialist branch of ophthalmology.

Duration and OrganisationThe one-year Fellowship programme is subdivided into three consecutive stages corresponding to skill levels that are progressively attained and certified term by term.

The Fellow achieves proficiency in the execution techniques for all diagnostic procedures covered by the Fellowship; is being involved in all clinical/treatment decisions; and has mastered a good theoretical knowledge of operating techniques. In addition, the Fellow has commenced her/his research project under a Tutor’s supervision. (Months 1 – 4)

The Fellow further fine-tunes her/his skills for the execution of all diagnostic procedures; achieves a competent auto-nomy in handling the clinical and thera-peutic aspects of a patient’s care; and begins executing surgery procedures under a Tutor’s supervision. The Fellow carries on with his research work accor-ding to the plan laid out at the start of the Fellowship. (Months 5 – 8)

The Fellow achieves a thorough know-ledge and mastery of the technical skills and of the diagnostic and clinical routi-nes; acquires a sound proficiency in surgery procedures as confirmed by the number of operations carried out; and completes her/his research programme. (Months 9 – 12)
