LS‐AMP Peer Mentoring Program

The Peer Mentoring Program matches upper division LS­ AMP students with LS­AMP First­Time Freshman. Congratulations to all of our mentors and mentees for a great Fall 2005!

Our wonderful mentors guided frosh mentees through their first semester, helping them adjust to university life. In addition to showing them around to departments, tutoring labs, and other campus resources, many got to see mentors’ research labs, and just hang out with someone “who knows the ropes.”

As a group we had a bowling night, and already this semester went to a CSUN men’s basketball game. Next up, Mountasia, here we come!

This all day program is designed to acquaint students from underrepresented groups with the academic and career opportunities associated with Graduate School.

Students will have the opportunity to meet with over 100 of the nation’s leading graduate schools. Free access to the Princeton Review’s on­line GRE prep course (approx. a $500 value). Complimentary lunch and transportation to the Forum!

Fellowship in Information Technology (SURF­IT)

SURF­IT is an intensive and personalized summer program for women, minority, or disadvantaged undergraduates, which includes a research experience supervised by a faculty member in computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, or bioinformatics. Weekly meetings focus on grad school prep, presenting research results, research ethics, field trips to neighboring Silicon Valley research laboratories, a number of social activities.

Fellows will receive: $4200 Stipend * Board + Travel to and from program * Housing on one of the nation's most beautiful campuses

Research areas include bioinformatics, graphics and visualization, wireless networks, storage systems, high performance computing, FGPA CAD and VLSI, semiconductor and optoelectronics devices, radar and microwave. Celebrating Success in Calculus!

Summer 2005 LS­AMP Math Workshop Participants Have a Great Fall 05!

Last summer LS­AMP students participated our four week morning math workshop They got paid $600, received a graphing calculator earned some important math and study skills, and met other folks try ng to reach the same goal: SUCCESS!

Well, this past fall, nearly three quarters of them got A’s and B’s n their Math 150A or Math 255A classes! Students definite y felt that the workshop he ped them achieve their goals! Can you think of a better way to help pass a very difficult class?
