Main sequence starMain sequence star

Protostar: formed from dust and gas. Why? Gravity.

Compression -> heat.

Heat -> hydrogen fusion

Star runs out of H, begins to swell.

A dying star can…A dying star can…

1. Cool into a dwarf star (white, then black)

OR

2. If it’s big, explode in a supernova.

(fusion, contraction & expansion, form heavier elements, then supernova)

Neutron StarNeutron Star

Supernova throws gas and dust into space. Dense core left = neutron star.

If big enough, becomes black hole.
