From eESSS dminist ationWelcome back to our nal quarter of learning in the Elementary School. Hopefully you had a wonderful break with your family and friends doing the things you love to do. Thank you to everyone for joining us on Tuesday for our Student Led Conferences and ge ng involved in your child’s learning.

    2015/16 Class Placements

Over the past month and con nuing into this nal quarter, we have and will con nue, to spend a large amount of me preparing our class lists for 2015/16.

How does this process work and what are the criteria you use? Ini ally, all grade level teachers are involved in discussions, including those from the Learning Support and English as a Second Language (ESL) department, as the new class lists are compiled. Following this, the Guidance Counselors and the Elementary Leadership team look for balance in the groupings

in terms of: gender, na onality, friendship groups, social dynamics, academics, learning styles, and independence. In some educa on systems students remain with the same cohort or class for a sustained period of me in order to promote con nuity. At ISM, we believe that in order to support our students in becoming self ‐directed, adaptable and able to apply their skills (both academic and social) in new situa ons, a change of both teacher and class composi on is more appropriate. This said, rather than dividing a single class six or seven diff erent ways, we aim to begin with a smaller

number, such as spli ng a class into three new ones, in order to support friendship groupings and transi on into a new grade level. Again, this will depend upon the cohort of students and the criteria listed above.

Students need to feel happy and a sense of belonging at school in order for learning to take place. As such, social groupings are a cri cal aspect of the process. We know that learning is a social ac vity and that an interac ve and suppor ve environment is crucial, if we are to stay true to this learning principle. Ul mately, we will always place students in a class where we feel their learning will be maximized and they will experience success.

Please note that while we are very aware that parents want to ensure the best possible placement for their child Con nued on page 2

considering all the above criteria, we are unable to accept speci c parent requests for placements as this would compromise the internal process we adhere to. However, we do acknowledge that there may be informa on that is helpful

to support this process. As such, please do share your concerns or any relevant informa on you have with your class teacher, counselors or the Elementary leadership team.

Sec on cards for returning students, informing you of your child’s class teacher for the 2015/16 school year will be available at the cashier’s offi ce at the end of the school year upon comple on of the re ‐enrolment process.

Student Led Conferences and Elementary Art Exhibi on Again, thank you to everyone for joining us on Tuesday as we

celebrated Student Led Conferences. We would also like to thank you for your support at the Elementary Art Exhibi on, and to publicly acknowledge our Art team for their behind ‐the ‐scenes work in pu ng together the show and interac ve ac vi es. Your par cipa on at these events means so much to your children and their teachers.

    Have a great weekend.

    From e ClinicTetanus (Lockjaw) Vaccination

Tetanus (Lockjaw) is caused by the Clostridium Bacterium. Their spores are resistant permanent forms which are found worldwidein garden soil or dust.

The disease causes painful ghtening of the muscles, usually all over the body. It can lead to "locking" of the jaw so the vic m can ‐not open his mouth or swallow. Tetanus leads to death in 50% or more of all cases.

As a teen or adult, do I need this vaccine?

Everyone needs protec on from tetanus. If you have not had a booster shot in 10 years or more, you should receive a tetanus shot. However, you should get the Tdap vaccine (the tetanus booster that also protects against pertussis) as soon as possible if you have not yet received it. You can get Tdap no ma er when you last got a Td booster shot.

It is good prac ce and clinic rou ne to give a booster shot without delay a er the slightest scratch acquired outdoor, if the per ‐son is not protected. This can be quite disrup ve if travelling. Smaller hospitals outside the NCR o en do not carry the vaccine.

College freshmen are generally required to have an updated immuniza on record.

While all our young students are protected ‐ since the vaccina on is a school requirement ‐ students aged 16 years and older, teachers and parents may need a booster to be protected for another ten years.

What are the risks from Td vaccine?

With any medicine, including vaccines, there is a chance of side eff ects. These are usually mild and go away on their own. Serious reac ons are also possible but are rare.

With information from the Center of Disease Control (CDC) and Robert Koch Institute (RKI)

PowerSchool closes on that date, and our assump on will be that a student who has not regis ‐tered by then is leaving at the end of the school year. We have many applicants at every Grade level on our Wai ng List, and on May 25th we shall begin the process of off ering all available slots. If you know already that you are depar ng in June, please inform Admissions of this as soon as possible. By doing so, you are making life much easier for incoming families. The deadline for informing us of your planned departure is May 22nd. Please note that past prac ce is that those who let us know they are leaving a er this date will forfeit $1000 of their Facili es Upgrade Deposit.

The school year is galloping toward the nishing line, and we are looking forward to examina ons, performances and
