In 2013, the Heron Lake Watershed District (HLWD) received funding from the Minnesota

Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund (ENRTF) as recommended by the Legislati ve-Citi zen Commission on Minnesota Resources (LCCMR) to install practi ces in Nobles, Jackson, and Murray Counti es. Over the last three years, fi ve projects were implemented. They included constructi on of a biodetenti on basin, multi ple terrace projects,

830th Street, west of 320th Ave)

Locati on two: Graham LakeBioretenti on Basin (located along130th street, west of Sundberg Ave)

a bioretenti on basin, and a streambank stabilizati on. The purpose of these projects was to reduce sediment and nutrient loads into streams and lakes within the HLWD. All the projects combined aff ected more than 300 acres and have an esti mated reducti on rate of 500 pounds of phosphorus and 550 pounds of Total Suspended Solids (TSS) per year. The total grant award was for $122,000. This covered 75 percent of the project costs and also provided funding to conti nue water sampling at three watershed sites to help monitor grant progress.

Figure 2. HLWD Water Sampling Sites

The ENRTF funds were used to conti nue sampling at these three sites. Each site had a set of lab and fi eld parameters that were tested. Each bott le sample was collected by HLWD staff and sent to Minnesota Valley Testi ng Laboratories (MVTL) to be analyzed. Lab parameters included: TSS, total phosphorus (TP), volati le suspended solids (SVS), NO2+NO3, turbidity, NH3, Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), Orthophosphorus (OP), and E.coli. Field parameters included: water temperature, conducti vity, pH, dissolved oxygen, and a Secchi Tube reading. Throughout the sampling season, results were recorded in a database and averaged at the end of the season (see Graphs 1 and 2).

PhosphorusPhosphorus is a key nutrient in plant growth. The concentrati on of phosphorus aff ects the amount of algae and other aquati c plants that can grow in bodies of water. Sources of phosphorus include ferti lizers, animal waste, septi c systems, plant decompositi on, and sediment. Graph 1 indicates that most of the sampling sites showed a decrease in TP over the project period. Okabena Creek, however, showed an increase.

Total Suspended Solids

TSS is a measurement of solid materials, both organic and inorganic, that are suspended in water. Pollutants, nutrients, pesti cides, bacteria, and metals may also att ach to the parti culate matt er. TSS concentrati ons vary with physical factors such as soil type, land use, and stream fl ows. Graph 2 illustrates that all sites showed a decrease in average TSS concentrati ons over the project period.

Graph 2. Average TSS Concentrati ons 2013-2015The ENRTF grant demonstrated multi ple projects to prevent TP and TSS nutrients from entering nearby streams and lakes. Other agricultural practi ces that reduce nutrient movement include decreasing ti llage intensity, using cover crops, establishing a buff er, and/or adding a third crop such as wheat or alfalfa to the crop rotati on.

Funding for this was provided by the Minnesota ENRTF as recommended by the LCCMR. The Trust Fund is a permanent fund consti tuti onally established by the citi zens of Minnesota to assist in the protecti on, conservati on, preservati on, and enhancement of the state’s air, water, land, fi sh, wildlife, and other natural resources.
