HSC MUSIC STUDY DAY SUCCESS On Thursday the 29th of April Erina High School hosted the HSC Music Study Day. Year 12 students from around the Central Coast came and completed sessions to aid them in their HSC preparation. A highlight of the day were the performances from schools across the Central Coast which allowed students to observe strengths and areas for improvement in the acts of other students and to reflect on their practical skills. The evaluations from both staff and students involved were overwhelmingly positive. Thanks to the Men of Music – Mr Simpson and Mr Read for their help on the day as well as Library

and Office ladies and the Technology staff. Mrs Gillard (Study Day convenor)

LETTER OF APPRECIATION! WELL DONE!

I would like to congratulate your music staff and your school, for hosting the MUSIC HSC STUDY DAY on Thursday 29th May at Erina High School. The day received great praise from our students at Kincumber High School who attended the day.

In particular, I’d like to commend Mrs Gillard for her effort and organization. Days like the HSC Music day do not come together so successfully without a lot of thorough planning and excellent communications to many schools. I have come across many music teachers during my career and I can see that you certainly have a valuable staff member and a great music teacher.

I’d also like to thank your whole music department including Mr Read and Mr Simpson. Thanks to the computer coordinator Mr Rennex, who had a laptop, screen, data projector and speakers ready for me to present a DER session to the music teachers which were visiting your school.

I appreciated this level of effort and professionalism. Sharon McKay (Music teacher, KHS)

CAPA NEWS

Congratulations to Stevie Pounder and the Erina Performance Team (dance) for their successful audition for this year’s StarStruck performance. StarStruck features only the best performers from the Central Coast and the Hunter region and we are thrilled that Stevie has been chosen as a featured soloist from a very competitive field. Stevie, a vocalist from year 10, will be performing at least four times during each show. StarStruck is held at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre between the 17th-19th of June and ticket information is available from the StarStruck website.

Dance A big thank you to Danielle Barsi who has been working with the Year 9 dance group on their dance festival audition.

Lizotte’s Night 2010 Year 12 were supported by musicians from across the school when they presented fantastic performances at Lizottes as part of their HSC assessment program. Held on the 16th March Year 12 were applauded by an audience of friends and family with lots of ex-students dropping in. See photo highlights later in this newsletter.

A big THANKS! Thanks to Stevie Pounder for her beautiful rendition of our national anthem for the Oval Opening ceremony. Also to Matt Lynch, Jake Brennan and Tom Beasley of year 10 who performed at the celebration. The boys performed light entertainment for 30 minutes and were so successful that they were asked for their business cards. Well done fellas!!!! Congratulations also to Tom for gaining a spot in the second round of the Talent Development Project. In the holidays Tom auditioned at the Sydney Entertainment Centre for one of sixteen positions in the program. He was up against the top talent in the entire state and did Erina proud.

Youth Rock During the first week of the school holidays two rock bands competed in the Youth Rock Band competition held at Sutherland Entertainment Centre. The students who participated were Maurice Hage (yr11), Pascali Loria (yr12), Andy-Jackson Sullivan (yr11), Anthony Kabbout (yr11), Brad Bennet (yr 11), Allan Hall (yr 11) and Alex Gresley (yr 11).

“Youth Rock was a lot of fun!!! The best things about it was when APRA gave

us more experience in music about copy rights, and other aspects of the music

business. On behalf of the members from First Aid Emergency and Oleander

we would like to thank the music staff of Erina high school for all the help that

they provided for us to make it into Youth Rock. It was a fun and energetic

night and we were so happy to connect and talk to other bands from New

South Wales.”

GATS MOSAIC MURAL WORKSHOPS - TERM 2 Last year a group of Year 7 & 8 Gifted and Talented Students (GATS) participated in two workshop days to produce four large scale mosaic murals based on the four natural elements of wind, water, fire and earth. Unfortunately, the project proved to be bigger than the time available to complete them and therefore it has now carried over into 2010. The students involved are now in Years 8 & 9 and will hopefully still be enthusiastic enough to continue on with the project in a series of two hour workshops beginning on Tuesday 11 May and continuing throughout Term 2. When completed, the murals will be mounted on A Block facing the school oval, where they will be visible to all students and passing traffic on The Entrance Road.

ART COMPETITIONS A number of motivated Art students have entered several current art competitions and eagerly await the judging and results. Tameka Jackson and Zoe Wynne of Year 7 both entered the Cartoon and Caricature Competition run by Riverside Theatres, Parramatta. Emily Dick of Year 7 was the lone entrant into the “Yesteryear” Art exhibition held at Waterford Retirement Village, Kincumber at the end of March. There were also 14 entrants into this years “Write 4 Fun” Art competition, ranging from Year 7 to Year 10, with first prize being $500 cash each to the winning student and to the winning school! I wish all students the best of luck with their creative and imaginative art works and look forward to hearing the results of each competition.

ART EXHIBITION AT THE HILL YOUTH CENTRE On Wednesday 14th April a number of Art students from the school had their work exhibited in “The Hill Youth Centre Art Competition and Exhibition” for 2010 at Kariong. There were six students who enthusiastically entered the competition, with works ranging from drawings, paintings, photographs and sculpture. Kristen Weddle of Year 11 Visual Arts came third in her category winning a gift voucher donated by Eckersleys Art Supplies. Her sculpture of a skeletal horse in wire foil and paint certainly made an impact on the judges. Other students involved were from Year 7 and had their work exhibited at The Hill Youth Centre over the April school holidays. They were Annika Davies, Caitlin McEnearney, Zoe Wynne and Tegan Gilchrist. Congratulations to all students involved, the Youth Centre will be forwarding on Certificates acknowledging your participation.

These are a bright new addition to the newly renovated Science block and enhance the recreation space between F block and D block. The mural takes the form of a panoramic beach scene in which people like Marie Curie, Isaac Newton, Galileo and Einstein are making their ideas known. The whimsical images designed by our G.a.T. students with the backdrop of our local coastline will reflect the notions of these famous scientists. The talented students who recently acknowledged their achievement in creating the mural include: Jamie–Lee Bennett, Kirsten Bock, Lara Coffey, Henry Chan, Emily De Vries, Joel Fletcher, Eliza Forkin, Matthew Grennan, Caitlin Murray, Danielle Parkes, Kimberlee Pierce, Zara Pilarski, Madeline Sheppard and Tara Uhle from Year Seven as well as Brianna Anthony, Daniel Gaha, Telisha Kelso and Hannah Langthorne from Year Eight. Due to the success of these murals the PD/H/PE faculty has also requested that GaT students work on designs to depict physical activities which will soon be seen as images on the walls of the canteen area. We intend to start on these in Term Four. Congratulations to the students involved. P Mottershead [Coordinator]

ART EXPRESS One Friday morning filled with sunshine, one teacher and eleven enthusiastic Year 12 students headed off from Gosford rail station to the Art Gallery of NSW in Sydney for a great day at the Gallery. All the students were anticipating viewing some extraordinary works by last year’s Year 12 students, in Art Express. There was a cross over with the Archibald Prize exhibition at this time, which also gave the students a fantastic opportunity to view the most prestigious portrait prize exhibition in Australia. By the time we reached Strathfield rain clouds had appeared and it had started to rain. This of course did not dampen the enthusiasm of the students who were to view the exhibition. Once inside the gallery we made our way through the Art Express Exhibition marvelling at the works from high school students from all over the state and appreciating and gaining inspiration from the amazing quality of them. After lunch the students became overawed by the wonderful works in the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Exhibitions. These contained works by some of Australia's finest artists. Truly amazing artworks! As we made our way back to the Central Coast by train there were so many positive responses with students inspired by the paintings, drawings, DVDs and other art forms... Brilliant! Technology Tips about TwitterTechnology Tips about TwitterTechnology Tips about TwitterTechnology Tips about Twitter... Twitter is a social networking website that you can sign up for to send out regular updates on what you are doing. The catch is that you need to use not more than 140 characters. Your updates are called ‘tweets’. What do you need to keep in mind if your children are tweeting? Twitter users must be at least 13 years old. Your child needs to be conscious of their choice of screen name—nothing that might provoke the wrong type of person being friends with them. Anything your child says on a tweet can be seen by anyone else looking at Twitter. Remind your child: Not to say anything they wouldn’t want the everyone to know—this includes any personal

information about their school name, address, sports teams, etc. To use the settings section to protect their updates from being viewed by anyone who they

haven’t approved as a follower. This will also keep your child’s updates from appearing on the public timeline.

Never to arrange to meet up with anyone they meet through Twitter unless they speak to you first.

To choose a username (online computer nickname) that doesn’t give away their real name or age.

If someone says or does something that makes them feel uncomfortable, they should tell you.

A decision to separate is one of the hardest choices you may ever make, and it has consequences for everyone in your family. Your family is undergoing significant change - separation usually means that the family is dividing, and that one parent will be leaving the household.
