Dementia Workforce

• 89% of care for older adults is provided by family members

• 2/3 are women• 30% are age 65+• 41% have household income <$50,000• 66% live with the person with dementia

• Direct care workers• Nurse aides, home health aides, and personal and home care

aides• Little, if any dementia training → high turnover

• Few geriatric health care providers; numbers shrinking

History

2013Dementia care specialist (DCS) pilot project initiated in five aging and disability resource centers (ADRCs).

2014 Pilot expanded to 11 additional ADRCs, totaling 16 ADRCs.

2015Additional DCS pilot project funded in three Wisconsin tribes to serve American Indian communities.

2016 A total of 19 DCSs continued to work in their communities.

20172017–2019 state budget includes ongoing funding for 19 DCS positions, expands program to 24 DCS positions.

2018 Five additional ADRCs are awarded DCS funding.

20192019–2021 state budget includes eight new positions for counties and one new position for tribes.
