ERIC is pleased to announce its 6th International Conference and Exhibition

Leading the Way: Educating, Empowering and Improving Service Delivery’ The Conference will be the first event to introduce both new NICE Guidelines on Idiopathic Constipation in Children and Nocturnal Enuresis.

of the Idiopathic Constipation in Children and Nocturnal Enuresis NICE Guidelines and discover the potential impact on continence services, at a local and national level.

• Tounderstandanddiscussrecentdevelopments in childhood continence andlearnfromhighprofilespeakersandhighly regarded health professionals workinginthefieldofchildhoodcontinence.

Throughout the day, there will be opportunitiestohearexpertkeynotespeakersandattendafternoonseminarspresenting new research and findings. Thedaywillalsoprovidenetworkingopportunities with delegates and exhibitors from a variety of settings. The NICE Guidelines are an important step for the childhood continence sector and, as the

leading charity in this field, ERIC is well placed to disseminate the information. We are delighted to welcome the chairs of both NICE Guideline Development Groups, Dr Jenny Gordon (Idiopathic Constipation in Children) and Dr Jonathan Evans (Nocturnal Enuresis) who will be introducing the guidelines. We are also pleased to welcome ERIC’s president, Dr Roger Morgan, Children’s Rights Director for England, who will be chairing the conference.

The Conference will be aimed at all health professionals or practitioners who have contact with children with continence problems.

1. Toilet training - One Step at a Time June Rogers, MBE. Paediatric Continence Advisor, Team Director PromoCon

Becoming toilet trained is a developmental milestone all parents strive for, but it can be an overwhelming prospect for many parents of children with special needs. This seminar will discuss a collaborative project between PromoCon and the Australian Continence Society in producing a resource for parents to help guide them through the toilet training process.‘OneStepataTime’breakstoilettraining into five steps to help the child develop theskillstheyneedtobecometoilettrained,with each step bringing the child closer to the goal of being able to go to the toilet on their own. An overview of each step will be given and details of how to obtain copies of the resource will be available on the day.&

Wee and Poo goes in the Loo- Helping Autistic Children with Toileting Lizi Snushall, B.Ed. Head of Lower School, Uffculme School, Birmingham andEve Fleming, MB, ChB. MRCPCH, BACommunityPaediatrician,WarwickHospital

This seminar will present some of the views of children who are on the autistic spectrum and their families. We will include the importance of assessment of the individual child as a basis for the formation of strategies for intervention. The importance of a multidisciplinary approach to the problem will be discussed and we will share tips for success from our experience.

2. Management of Daytime Urinary Incontinence in ChildrenPrasad Godbole, FRCS. FRCS(Paeds). FEAPU. Consultant Paediatric Urologist, Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust

This seminar is primarily aimed at continence nurses, paediatricians and general practitioners and highlights a common problem of daytime wetting in children. Issues addressed will

include the aetiology, investigations and management of children presenting in primary care/community continence clinics or to paediatricians with daytime wetting disorders. New investigative techniques such as dynamic pelvic ultrasonography and management methodsincludingsurfaceEMGbiofeedbackwill be discussed. Various surgical procedures for intractable wetting including the use of Botulinum A toxin will also be presented.

3. Idiopathic Constipation in Children and Nocturnal Enuresis; Relating New Guidelines to our Working Practice - NICE 2010 Brenda Cheer, RGN. RSCN. Paediatric Specialist Continence Nurse and Charlotte Mawby, RGN. RSCN. Independent Paediatric Continence Nurse Advisor

This seminar will discuss new NICE guidance on Idiopathic Constipation in Children and NocturnalEnuresis.Itwilllookathowguidance can be translated into practice and how it will support or challenge our current practice. The session will also discuss the need for all children to receive prompt and appropriate interventions in the assessment and management of constipation and nocturnal enuresis.

4. Improving Childhood Continence: How Best to Educate and Empower FamiliesDr Chinnaiah Yemula, MBBS, DCH, MD (Paediatrics), MRCPCH, Developmental Paediatrician Bedford Community Health Services

This seminar deals with a number of simple yet innovative methods to educate children and young people with continence problems and their parents or carers. The seminar will lookatnewNICEGuidelinesregardingpatienteducation. Topics will include the following: sharinggoodpractice,drinkingandvoidingcharts, child friendly diaries to improve compliance, using PowerPoint slides and resourcessuchasbooks,booklets,flipchartsandleaflets.
