It’s not easy to get animated about old things, unless you’re a lover of antiques, cobwebs or dust. Having said that, any celebration that pointedly showcases the history of automotive engineering... then I’m in. On January 29th this year Mercedes- Benz celebrated 125 years of innovation. 125 years after Carl Benz filed his ‘vehicle with gas engine drive’ under patent number 37435 at the Berlin Patent Office in 1886, we somehow in the blink of an eye seem to have zoomed forward in a petrol driven time warp. Look where we are now. The January 2011 date marks the anniversary when Carl Benz filed this application for the copyright on his three-wheeled motor car. Let’s not even think about Reliant Robins at this point. Since that stellar moment in Berlin the date has been widely recognised as the official birthday of the motor car. And at the same time as Herr Benz was busy on three wheels, Gottlieb Daimler was developing the first four-wheeled motor car. I like the sound of him, much more sensible. Three wheels? I ask you. Anyway, working independently of each other, the founding fathers of Daimler AG and the globally successful Mercedes-Benz brand laid the building blocks for the modern motor vehicle. It’s widely recognised that the company that invented the motor car has since that time gone on to shape its development more diversely and enduringly than any other motor vehicle manufacturer in a plethora of relevant areas; from drive technology to comfort and safety through to design. It’s Mercedes-Benz who first opened a research centre for car accidents. That very same team went on to investigate actual accidents on the roads in Germany and were directly attributable for the improvement on the safety of new models. Following this research Mercedes-Benz dug deep and began creating a raft of safety driven devices that we all take for granted these days. There’s the safety belt pre-tensioners, the airbag, safety belts with inertia reel three-point, offset crash tests (frontal part, similar to those in real life), ABS, height-adjustable seatbelts, ESP, brake assist system. The hits just keep on coming, as it’s a seemingly endless list of achievements. In order to strengthen its position as a ground-breaking manufacturer, Mercedes-Benz currently has at its disposal a global network comprising of 19,000 researchers and developers around the world. This is a huge commitment to the future that has other manufacturers wincing. Only last month Mercedes-Benz of Cheltenham & Gloucester launched another trendsetting model – the new generation re-styled CLS. It seems to me that there’s no better time to think about buying a new or Approved Used Mercedes-Benz, as the local dealership in Cheltenham appears to be in a celebratory and buoyant mood. In other words grab yourself a deal now. Steve Lyons, Dealer Principal, Mercedes- Benz, Cheltenham & Gloucester said, ‘our 125th anniversary is a huge year for us and to mark this we have some incredible offers right now’. So there we have it. Some great deals to be had and not a gas driven three- wheeler to be seen. Thank God. APRIL 2011 COTSWOLD STYLE 139 Eric Barton takes a look at 125 years of Mercedes-Benz...
