The makeover at The Kings Arms Hotel in Stow-on-the-Wold is now nearing its final phase of completion and what an awe- inspiring job they’ve made of it. The management team of owners, Lucinda Hawkings-Byass and Richard East have very delicately re-furbished this old coaching house and restored a sense of refinement and elegance. I’ve always liked the feel of these boutique hotels, as they offer a really cosy, yet stylish place to stay and eat, without the sense of being ‘swallowed up’ as you can be by the large faceless corporate hotels. And talking of eating, The Kings Arms has just taken on a new head chef; one Jason Hyatt. Now this is very good news indeed, as he recently hails from Fosse Manor Hotel and has cooked for none other than Prince Philip and Princess Anne. In short, the food is fantastic. If you get the chance to eat at The Kings Arms Hotel, plump for his signature dishes of either Confit Duck or Belly Pork. They’re both truly historic in the sumptuous sense. And if your tooth is of the sweet variety, then kick out the diet, throw away the calorie counter and indulge yourself in his legendary sticky toffee pudding. It’s a beautifully rich assault on the senses that won’t leave you feeling cheated or hollow. The new refurbishment has meant that The Kings Arms Hotel is enjoying a rejuvenation and Richard East commented: “We had a very good race week and the recent beer festival proved to be very successful for us.” And with horse racing in mind and all things equine, I’ve also found out that the Hotel has its own race horse, My Viking Bay, which has just raced at Cheltenham. Although The Kings Arms is fully up and running, they’re due to have the official launch in the first week of July, which will provide a showcase for the new chef, the restaurant and of course the hotels room facilities. The restaurant itself takes the theme of an oyster bar and chop house, featuring a traditional steak and butchers menu... all sourced locally of course. There’s also a fantastic selection of fine wines and beers to choose from. I’m also reliably informed that they’ll soon be starting up their own wine club, which will definitely be something to look out for, particularly with the Byass family sherry heritage. The Kings Arms Hotel is absolutely astounding and totally in keeping with this historic town and its remarkable history. Old and new don’t always mix, but this refurbishment has lovingly captured the very essence of sophistication and elegance, together with offering a very relaxed and modern environment. The Kings Arms Hotel in Stow-on-the-Wold is definitely worth a visit for either lunch or dinner and to perhaps even relax and unwind in one of their well appointed boutique-style bedrooms. And of course now they can really boast a royal connection with their new chef. You see, there’s always a twist in the tale and this one emanates from the kitchen.
