PROMOTING VOLUNTEERING THROUGHOUT EREWASH Erewash Voluntary Action NEWS Autumn 2018 EREWASH CLINICAL COMMISSIONING GROUP FUNDING CUTS For over 20 years Erewash Voluntary Action has supported the voluntary and community sector in Erewash. On the 5 th July 2018, the 70 th Anniversary of the NHS, the Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCG’s) across Derbyshire sent a letter to inform 40 organisations including ourselves, that they planned to cut our core funding. The funding we receive from the CCG is about half of our core funding that provides volunteer centre functions, small groups work, information sharing and representation work. The funding cuts will also affect our Mental Health Partnership work and Community Connectors (for these we will be looking for funding to keep up the great work we have already started). These funds would cease at the end of December 2018. A decision should have been taken at the joint CCG board meeting held on the 17 th August but the board decided that it wanted to carry out a rapid review of the impact (in spite of all organisations affected having completed impact assessment reviews) A final decision will be made at its meeting to be held on the 27 th September. We, like all other organisations, have been working with CCG’s and NHS to challenge the decision and to try to retain some of the vital work that is undertaken by the voluntary sector. Over September there will be meetings arranged with CCG, Derbyshire County Council and the Voluntary and Community Sector to look at what can be done to achieve the savings that are needed. Erewash CCG Funding cuts

As you may hear or see in the media we have had formal notification from Derbyshire CCG’s regarding funding cuts.

Derbyshire CCG’s face a significant financial challenge. A final decision will now take place in

September 2018.

We are presently involved in an “Engagement Process”. As part of this, we are required to seek the views of our members, volunteers and clients.

Please can you take the time to fill in this short questionnaire. https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/L7TFSBD

66 amazing responses to our short questionnaire on funding cuts so far.

Thank you for all your support.

If you would like to give feedback on how this will affect our services and its potential impact of discontinuing funding, please email [email protected] or to: Patient experience Team,

Tollbar House, 1 Derby Road, Ilkeston, Derbyshire, DE7 5FH. Please let us have any of your comments as well.

PRESS RELEASE – Erewash Voluntary Action – CVS – 9 July 2018

(Un)happy Birthday – NHS 70th Anniversary Marked by Grant Cuts to Local Charities Local charity Erewash Voluntary Action – Council for Voluntary Service is one of dozens of local

charities who received an unwelcome surprise on the 70th Anniversary of the NHS today – a letter from the local NHS Clinical Commissioning Group telling them that it plans to cut all its grant funding.

CCG grants pay for a number of CVS services which help older, disabled and vulnerable people in Erewash keep well, stay independent and have vital social contact. This includes befriending and

shopping, transport to local community groups, monthly tea dance, and the support via small grants given to help local voluntary and community groups in Erewash who provide a range of activities.

Stella Scott, CEO, said:

“The grant funding we receive from the CCG is half of our income, so this seriously threatens our charity’s services.

“We are only one of a number of organisations receiving this news today and the impact will be disastrous. Those who rely on our services – many of whom describe them as a lifeline, without which

life wouldn’t be worth living – will be devastated. So will the volunteers who generously give so much of their time for free and make these services possible.

“We had been told that the CCG was under pressure, but to find out that we are going to lose all our grant is terrible news - especially on a day when we had hoped to be celebrating 70 years of the NHS

and the additional investment being made by the Government’’. “It’s also short sighted, when health services are under so much pressure, to slash affordable,

community-based, preventative support that does so much to keep people out of hospital. The CCG’s own equality assessment says that their cuts will increase social isolation and loneliness, which is a

cause of depression and early death.”

WE WILL KEEP YOU INFORMED OF ANY DEVELOPMENTS

EREWASH MENTAL HEALTH PARTNERSHIP The Erewash Mental Health Partnership aims to develop opportunities for people with mental health issues to access local groups and organisations in order to participate in activities. Volunteering opportunities are also available and actively promoted to service receivers. There have been a number of successes which include:

78 individuals from various community groups and organisations have attended Mental Health First Aid England training, and are now their group’s mental health champion.

40 community and voluntary groups have a trained mental health champion and have been

developing their group as mental health friendly, encouraging a positive welcome and introduction for new service receivers attending.

124 volunteers from the groups involved with the Erewash Mental Health Partnership have

attended a half day mental health awareness training course, helping to improve their knowledge and understanding of mental health.

6 Information Events have been organised at alternative venues in Long Eaton and Ilkeston

Over 300 groups, organisations and individuals receive regular weekly information about local

Erewash opportunities including where to participate in a group, events, training and volunteering. All of this information is signposted to service receivers

The Erewash Engagement Group is jointly run by the Mental Health Together and Erewash Mental Health Partnership. The group meets every three months at the St Andrew’s Methodist Church, Bath Street Ilkeston. Meetings start at 1.00 pm until 3.00 pm. New members are always welcome and refreshments are provided. The next Erewash Engagement Group meeting takes place on Monday 24 September 2018. The aim of the meeting is to bring together views, experience and knowledge of those living with a mental health condition or those caring for someone with a mental illness. It is an opportunity to share views and contribute to discussions within a safe and comfortable environment. Tea, coffee and cake is provided.

Meetings provide an opportunity for members to hear about the Mental Health Together and Erewash Mental Health Partnership. It also enables Mental Health Together to gather experiences as part of their engagement role.

NEW OPPORTUNITIES WITH THE COMMUNITY CONNECTORS AND SOCIAL CONNECTORS

PROJECTS

Our Social Connectors project will be launching very shortly. This is a new and exciting venture in partnership with local GP practices, including Littlewick Medical Practice in Ilkeston and Golden Brook in Long Eaton. This model of support will be based within GP practices and the community.

A Social Connectors ‘Drop in’ will be available within the GP practice for patients to come and chat about what support groups and activities are available in Erewash. If necessary, appointments will be offered to patients with non-medical issues such as social isolation by their GP and other health professionals who feel the patient could benefit from accessing interventions within the community and voluntary sector. Patients may also be offered a face to face or telephone appointment with a Social Connector; a volunteer who can help them find social activities and support in the community. Together they will explore what the patient’s interests are and what is important to them. Patients are then sign posted or referred to local voluntary sector services, community groups and local activities which can provide the necessary interventions to match the patient’s needs and issues.

Erewash Voluntary Action’s Social Connecting service will help patients access social or lunch clubs, self-help groups, leisure and sport activities, mental wellbeing groups and link them up with volunteering opportunities. Erewash Voluntary Action’s model of social connecting will also focus on the valuable contribution Social Connectors can make in helping patients make positive choices regarding their health and wellbeing.

The Social Connectors project is an extension of the existing Community Connectors initiative which aims to encourage people to look out for each other and make sure support is available and easy to find in our local area. This is a long-term undertaking but is thought to be the best way to increase wellbeing among Erewash citizens over time.

We have recently been heavily involved in the setting up of a Walking Netball group in Long Eaton, following lots of interest shown within the community. Working alongside my colleague Catriona Paterson, Development Worker here at Erewash Voluntary Action, we arranged an initial meeting with England Netball to assess the local interest in Walking Netball, and followed this up with a taster session. The taster session was extremely successful, with 15 people attending. We arranged for one of the participants to attend Walking Netball Host Training delivered by England Netball, and a 6 week course of additional Walking Netball taster sessions. If you are interested in getting involved in Walking Netball please do not hesitate to get in touch.

The network of Community Connectors is steadily expanding, with over 70 connectors across the borough. We hope to add to this number considerably in the coming months when Care Coordinators and GP front line staff are due to attend the induction training and join the network. Over 1500 connections have been recorded in the first year of the project highlighting the value of Community Connectors as ‘natural sign-posters’ – people across Erewash who help friends, family, colleagues and neighbours to find support in their own communities. Connectors help people get health support and information on local groups and activities. Many of our connectors are already actively involved in existing community groups, or may be already supporting others in the community and helping link them into an activity of some kind.

If you would like more information or to get involved with Community Connectors or Social Connectors, please contact: - Jo Hallam, Community Connectors Development Worker by email:

[email protected] Tel: 0115 9466740 or mobile 07704 338201.
