Food Drive

Our food drive is in full swing. We are collecting food items for the Anglican Parish who hand out regular food bundles to needy local families. The P&C have organised this drive to help fill the gap. The students of the class who bring in the most items by next Friday will each receive a $2 voucher to spend at our canteen. Please find the item list for each class in the P&C section later in the newsletter.

Reward Day

Tomorrow afternoon is Reward Day. Students who have not received a note from the Reflection Room in the last 5 weeks are rewarded for good behaviour tomorrow at 2:30pm with extra play. Teachers will be providing and joining in structured activities.

Pie Drive

Next Thursday, the P&C will be handing out pie drive order forms.

Last Week’s Quiz

What is the past tense of walk, smile, sleep? The correct answer is walked, smiled, slept.

Congratulations go to Blayden, Brody, Josie and Ben who submitted correct entries.

Mr Jonathan Ridgway

Swapping recess and lunch on Thursdays

From next Thursday, over 100 students will be hopping on buses around 12.15 to travel to Maitland Park for sport. For this reason, we will trial a swap of recess and lunch times on Thursdays for the whole school. At 11am each Thursday, students will eat lunch and the canteen will serve lunch orders. The other 4 days will remain as normal.

Concert Tickets

Ticket sales have been fantastic and the evening performances have sold out! Tickets are $7 per person with a limit of 4 per family until Friday, no limit from Monday onwards.

Zone Athletics Carnival

Maitland Inter-school Sport Competition (Years 3-6)

Unfortunately sport is cancelled for Years 3-6 this week due to Maitland Council maintenance of the grounds (spraying) and will resume next week. The loss of play this week is being discussed by the committee and further information will be forwarded at a later date. Thank you to all students who have nominated a sport and to parents for your support and encouragement. We look forward to this sports competition kicking off next week.

Just a reminder that students in Stage 3 who are playing soccer will need to wear shin pads (compulsory) and soccer boots (non-compulsory). All students in all teams will need to take their water bottle, hat and wear sunscreen. Students will leave the school at around 12pm. Students will arrive back at school by approximately 2.30-2.45pm.

Book Week Celebrations

During Week 6 we will be celebrating Book Week. Over the last five weeks, during library lessons, we have read a collection of the amazing Short Listed books to the children and completed a variety of activities based on the books.

On Wednesday the 24th of August between 1.00 and 1.20pm, all children across the school will participate in a buddy reading session, where children in Years 3-6 will visit a K-2 class and read stories to the children. The pupils will then have a picnic lunch together.

On Friday the 26th of September at 9.20am, the children in Year 2 and K/6K will walk to the Beresfield Library to watch a fabulous Book Week play, presented by the talented team from Newcastle Library. The children will be entertained by stories, songs and art and craft activities. The children are required to wear full school uniform and take any necessary medications along with them to the library. The children will be accompanied by Mrs Lyle, Ms Aparicio and Ms Dooner. The children will return to school at approximately 10.40am.

We will not be hosting a parade this year, as all classes are busily practising for our musical spectacular.

Oliver is here!

During Week 4 our library received a new computer program called “Oliver”. This new program has excellent features for our students and can be accessed by our students at home or at school. The children can access Oliver by logging into the Student portal and looking for the Oliver Library symbol on their Kidspace page. The Oliver site offers search options into our school library and into the Newcastle Library network. It also provides direct links to ABC Splash, Primary Games, Kids National Geographic and CBeebie Story Time which includes a collection of online stories. Over the next few weeks the children will be taught how to access, navigate and use all of the wonderful features this new program offers.

Premier’s Reading Challenge

The Premier’s Reading Challenge will be closing on the 20th of August. If you have not entered your child’s personal reading log details onto the website, please send your record sheet to the library and I will enter the details for you. Congratulations to all those wonderful readers who have completed the challenge.

Karen Meyer

Public Speaking

Our Public Speakers, who made it through to the next level, went to Rutherford P.S. today, Thursday 18th August, to represent our school at the Zone Finals. We're sure they did their very best and hope they enjoyed this great experience. Now we eagerly await the results.

Sydney Aquarium Visit

On Friday 29th of July, 1H, 1L and K-6K hopped on a bus and travelled down to the Sydney Sea Life Aquarium. We had a wonderful picnic recess by the harbour before entering the Aquarium.

Straight away the penguins were a hit as they were speeding through the water. We were able to find Dory quite easily swimming around in a giant tank. The shark tunnel was a little spooky at first but once inside the children were mesmerised by the majestic creature swimming above their heads. We saw a diver swimming in the shark tanks and one even held up a shark tooth for us to see. We saw some glow in the dark jelly fish and were even able to feel some of the magnificent sea creatures that live in the waters around Australia like the sea cucumber and the star fish.

After a long day we hopped back on the bus for the trip home and a few of us even had a little nap because we were so exhausted.
