There is one performance of Berovision to go this evening. It has been a sell-out yet again!

Thanks to parents and grandparents in supporting the event through providing costumes, and transporting students. Thanks to staff for co-ordinating the many things that go into making the show happen, and for giving up two evenings in a row away from their own families. And thanks to the students who have learnt their moves to produce yet another great performance. Special mentions go to Melissa Smith and her team who have led the organisation of the event, and our three stars Molly B, Abby M and Ruby A.

Our best athletes will be at Woodberry Oval tomorrow to represent our school at the Zone Carnival. Good luck!

Busy Bees Playgroup

Our playgroup for children starting in Kinder next year continues tomorrow at 9:15 in the school hall.

Burning Question

It was sad to hear that fire destroyed the Uluru Roadhouse at North Arm Cove on Tuesday night. It is directly in front of the Great Aussie Bush Camp. The camp wasn’t affected in any way and our Year 4s will be attending the camp later this term as planned.

Crazy Hair and Sox Day

The student leaders are organising a fundraiser next Friday 10th August for the Year 6 gift to the school which they will present at the end of the year. For the price of a gold coin, students can come to school with crazy hair and crazy socks. The rest of their uniform remains as normal. We look forward to seeing some crazy combinations.

Our Children's University students visited Beresfield Public Library to celebrate it's re-opening on Friday 27th July.

Students had the opportunity to meet Nuatali Nelmes - Lord Mayor of Newcastle and participate in a treasure hunt through the library.

Students have until the end of Term 3 to complete their 30 hours of extra learning to be eligible to graduate on the Monday 5th November at the Newcastle University.

Primary Gifted and Talented Students (GATS) Program

In Weeks 3-10 of Term 3, Beresfield Public School will be running a Maths Enrichment Program involving a one-hour class every Tuesday afternoon. The classes will involve students from Years 5-6 who have been selected by their classroom teacher as someone who demonstrates aptitude in the area of Mathematics. Students will be informed of their inclusion in this program in the upcoming week and a note will be sent home to confirm their placement. The classes will be run by Mr Edwards.

Zone Athletics Carnival

Thank you to all students who have returned their permission note for the Zone Athletics Carnival. This carnival will take place at Woodberry Oval this Friday and all students are to meet Mr Edwards and Mr Gab in Area A at 7.45am for a 8am departure (unless otherwise communicated). If meeting teachers at the ground, please get your child's name marked off at the ground. A list of event details was sent home earlier in the week and an itinerary of events will be available at the event. Please make sure your child has a $2 payment on the day. A canteen will be open and available but I suggest that all students pack a healthy lunch and recess with plenty of water. The weather looks like it is going to be great, so pack the sunscreen and hat. We are looking forward to seeing our students compete on the day and look forward to your support. If taking your child early, they will need to be signed out with the supervising teacher. Students who are successful at the Zone Athletics will progress to the Regional Carnival to be held at Glendale Sports Complex on Friday 31st August.

PSSA State Netball

Claira R is in Sydney this week with her family and is representing the Hunter PSSA Regional Netball team at the State Netball Competition. A NSW team will be selected at the conclusion of the event and we wish Claira all the best.

On Monday 13th August, Chaise C will play in the Hunter PSSA Golf Trials held at Newcastle Golf Club at Fern Bay. We wish Chaise all the best at this event. Tips for tackling kids head lice

Use hair conditioner and a fine head lice comb.

Apply conditioner to the hair and comb through with a wide-toothed comb to remove the tangles.

Then use a fine metal lice comb to remove the lice and pull the nits off the hair.

The conditioner helps slow down the louse and makes it easier to comb out.

For more information go to the “Nitbusters” website www.health.nsw.gov.au/headlice/

Last Week’s Quiz

On what part of your body would you find your scalp? On your head.

Congratulations go to Harvey, Noah, Emily and Bree who submitted correct entries.

This Week’s Quiz

Which of these animals DOESN’T shed their skin?

A. Frog

B. Lizard

C. Mosquito

D. Snake

E. Spider

Question supplied by Jayden R in 2G.

Write your name and class with the answer on a piece of paper, and post it into the Quiz Box near the office by Wednesday.

Kindergarten Enrolment for 2019

If you have a child or know of a child who will turn 5 years old before 31st July 2019 and wishes to enrol in Kindergarten please contact the school as soon as possible and collect an enrolment form.

School Absences

When students stay away from school their learning and friendships are affected and their teachers can become frustrated and disappointed because learning becomes disjointed and difficult.

Students who stay away from school:

Miss the introduction of new work.

Fail to complete work.

Miss revision.

May lack confidence and feel embarrassed because they cannot do work the class has been studying.

Miss celebrations, for example student of the week, class awards, excursions, school visitors, assemblies and special activities.

Can find it difficult to develop good friendships.

Don’t forget if your child is absent from school you must send a note into the class teacher the day your child returns. If they are away for more than 3 days please ring the office to notify us of the reason for the absence.

School Facebook Page

Our school has a Facebook page. Photos may be posted from special events, excursions and assemblies. We will also use the page to broadcast reminders, make announcements and post links to things such as our school newsletter and other websites worth reading.

Entry to School Grounds

If you need to come into our school for any reason that is different to drop off and pick up times, before and after school, you MUST come to our office area and let us know that you are on school grounds. This is particularly important in case we have a lock down or evacuation at any time. It is also important for use to know who is on site at all times so that we can manage any incidences that may occur.

Book Week Celebrations

During Week 5 we will be celebrating Book Week. During the first five weeks of term, during library lessons, we will be reading a collection of amazing Short Listed books to the children and complete a variety of activities based on these books.

Book Parade and Reading Picnic

On Thursday the 23rd of August, we will be celebrating Book Week with a Book Parade. The theme for Book Week this year is, ‘Find Your Treasure’. The children will be focusing on identifying the books that they treasure. The children will be participating in a dress-up parade at 12.00pm. All children are asked to join in the excitement and come dressed in a costume from a book that they treasure. Some children may treasure nonfiction texts and come dressed as their favourite animal or a person from another country, time or place. This could involve ancient Egypt, medieval times when there were knights, kings and queens or even back in the times of dinosaurs. Other children may prefer fairy tales and come dressed as their favourite character or travel into the future as astronauts or aliens. The possibilities are endless. Please use your imagination and have fun.

All parents and friends are invited to attend our parade and stay for a Reading Picnic. Please bring along a rug or fold up chair, a picnic lunch, then lay back, relax, read books with your children and escape to where ever your imagination will take you. Don’t forget to come and visit our Book Fair and buy some of the fantastic books we will have on sale. The Fair will be open in the hall at lunchtime and after school until 3.30pm.

On Friday the 24th of August, the children in Kindergarten will walk to the Beresfield Library to watch a fabulous Book Week play, presented by the talented team from Newcastle Library. The children will be entertained by stories, songs and art and craft activities. The children are required to wear full school uniform and take any necessary medications along with them to the library. Their class teachers, Mrs Ladmore and Ms Wallace, will accompany the children.

Premier’s Reading Challenge

The Premier’s Reading Challenge will be closing on the 20th of August. If you have not entered your child’s personal reading log details onto the website, please send your record sheet to the library and I will enter the details for you. Congratulations to all those wonderful readers who have completed the challenge.
