WELCOME TO THE FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCE

The Faculty of Social Science at Ruhr-Universität Bochum pursues a modern interdisciplinary approach to Social Science. The central characteristic of the Faculty is the linking between the five on par disciplines Political Science, Sociology, Social Psycho-logy and Social Anthropology, Social Policy and Social Economy as well as Social Science Methodology and Statistics.

Arguably Social Sciences are particularly prone to profit from the multi-faceted perspectives international students bring to the classroom. We feel that discussions, for example in the field of international relations, can be enhanced immensely by first-hand experiences of other cultures and therefore support students who wish to study abroad, as well as those who wish to study in Bochum for a period of time or even in order to pursue a full degree. In this document you will find information regarding several aspects of studying and living in Bochum. In particular, information regarding the academic structure and focus of the Faculty of Social Science is highlighted. Students, lecturers, and departmental coordinators from foreign universities who wish to come to Bochum on the basis of an existing exchange agreement as well as those who are interested in establishing an exchange are welcome to contact us in case of further questions. With kind regards, Ines Kammeier (Departmental Erasmus Coordinator)

1 RUHR-UNIVERSITÄT BOCHUM Founded in 1965, Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB) was the first university founded in post-war West Germany. Since its foundation, RUB has rapidly grown and provided the Ruhr area with vital intellectual leadership in its post-war period of transition. In only a

few decades the region has transformed itself from being Germany's most important industrial production site for coal and steel into a service- and culture-oriented metropolis. Today, over 41,000 students study at RUB, served by 5,500 dedicated faculty members and staff.

With 20 faculties offering more than 45 undergraduate pro-grammes and 65 graduate pro-grammes, Ruhr-Universität offers a complete spectrum of study. Students are able to create their own innovative curricula combining subjects and courses from these different fields. Research at Bochum is varied and rich, stretching from neuroscience, plasma technology, medical technology and computer science, all the way to the study of Shakespeare. Ruhr-Universität is an internationally known centre of excellence in the areas of “Life Sciences”, “Life Technologies” and “Global Change.” Unlike many older universities in Germany, Ruhr-Universität has a designated university campus. Everything is within walking distance – lecture halls, library, cafeteria or the Arts Center. In total, this creates a close-knit, innovative and culturally diverse community.

3 THE UNIVERSITY ALLIANCE RUHR (UA RUHR) As part of the UA Ruhr, several universities and technical universities in the Ruhr area cooperate closely. That includes RUB, University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE), and Technical University Dortmund (TUD). Students of these universities may take classes at any of the other universities, which may also count towards their degree. Thus, students have a bigger choice of classes. This is of particular interest to students who wish to take classes in English, since we are able to significantly increase our offer of English classes through our cooperation. Each semester, the Faculty of Social Science of RUB publishes an English Course Catalogue in cooperation with the Faculties of Sociology and Political Science of the UDE.

Cooperation on this scale is possible because of the excellent public transport system that connects the three universities. Students automatically receive a semester ticket upon matriculation. Thus, commute is possible without additional cost. Please find the current Common Course Catalogue here

ANNUAL EVENTS Extraschicht - Night of industrial culture “Since its premiere in 2001, ExtraSchicht has been bringing the fascination of an entire region to a single point. The subtitle, "Night of Industrial Culture" reveals at once the original aim of the festival in its first years: ExtraSchicht takes former industrial plants,

active production facilities, mines and slagheaps, and skilfully turns them into venues of industrial culture, making clear the transformation from heavy industry to a modern region of business and culture. In doing so, it creates an atmosphere that could only be generated in the Ruhr Area, because of its history.” More information

University Summer Festival In 2016, Ruhr-Universität celebrated its annual summer feast for the 42nd time. Each year, countless activities and events take place on this day, e.g. concerts, a Street food festival, the “University Run” of 5 or 10km on the campus and a spectacular firework. ©RUB, Schirdewahn
