Slide 2 – Primary and Secondary Sources

I research a variety of works by various artists for example I researched the work of Paolozzi, Picasso, and Schwitters, to understand the various works to get an idea of what collage I should do for my own work based of the still life.

Slide 3 – Using Formal Elements

Using the formal elements helped me get a understanding and apply them into my work for example our first task was to draw a sketch of the still life on the table so we could work out where we were at and what formal elements we needed to improve on.

We then practiced using a variety of mediums to practice our mark making techniques for example I studied Giorgio Morandi’s work and copied one of studies which was solely using cross hatching to create form and tone.

Slide 4 – Visual Language and InfluencesI think the work of others has helped me give a understanding of others work and be researching a few artists and creating studies of their work, I can then use ideas and techniques from their work and apply them to my own.For example when I researched van gogh, I looked into a variety of his work to see his technique and researched into his Art style which I could apply into my own work. I first copied a section of his work to see what technique he uses and then tried to apply that into my own work using the still life we had in class.

Slide 5 – Mixed Media and TechniquesUsing a variety of techniques It can help bring out colour shape and tonal qualities, for example I used a cut out work of my still life which I stuck on some brown paper as the paper used was darker in colour it helped bring out the negative space through the lighter areas of the background. I then experimented with using pen to create texture.

Another example of using the characteristics of materials was in my 3D model work which I used the use of cardboard and paper to create a variety of texture and materials using the basic qualities of the cardboard and experimenting with the different ways I could use it to create form and shape. For example I ripped of the thin outer lay exposing the rigid inside which I used for a nice bumpy texture, whereas using the plane shape of the cardboard I used to create thing layers which helped contrast between that the thick hard solid forms.

Slide 6 - Safety

During the course we used a variety of different mediums and material to help further our understanding of the work we’re doing as well as to get familiar with the materials and things we have at out disposal, however what is always our priority is safety. So before using the workshop or printing machines we had an induction to help us familiar with the using the machines safely as well as helping us get to know what to do, and to avoid any risks of harming ourselfs.

Evaluation SummaryWhen during the project I found time management a difficult thing to do as I wanted to go back and work on other pieces of work whilst trying to get the current work done to a pleasing standard. What I found more difficult at times was the collage work and print making pages as It was harder to research as well as produce, Another example was the 3D model page as we where getting towards the end of the project the quality in work dropped as I was trying to get other pieces of work done as well as write up annotations for some pages. When doing my research I found a range of examples of secondary work from other artists that helped further my understanding of the work, as well as give me a idea on what to do and how I can incorporate aspects into my pieces, which I did through creating studies of other artists work. I found using the internet as well as books helped inspire and add to research.Development of the after researching other Artists work I would experiment with the ideas coming up with several designs before choosing a final design. For example my Collage work I did using the ideas and inspiration of my artists to then apply their techniques as well as the using my still life as my basis combined the inspiration and the work together to develop a new piece. Some of the formal qualities of some of my work really stand and help bring some of the pieces together as a whole as using a combination of them really make my work stand out. For example I think the most important features is to not only get the shape and proportion correct by have a correct use of tonal values so you can understand where and what kind of object it is. For example I like the proportion and shade in the draws compared to the tonal values and proportion of the paintings. For my final works I liked the final outcome of them as during the development of the project I have further improved my understanding of formal elements and can apply them to the majority of my work. For example my painting I really like as it not only looks good, but the use of tone and shading with the paints help it stand out.
