MARKET WRAP

Indian equity market ends down 2.8%, Nifty holds 5300 & Sensex slips below 18k.

Indian railway annual budget unveiled, promises investment worth Rs. 57,360 Cr.

Global equity markets end down, rising crude oil prices hits investor’s sentiments.

Indian equity market ended down and shredded last week gains ending 2.80% down on

the back of negative global cues and rising crude oil prices that hit investor’s

sentiments. Nifty shredded 155 pts to end the week at 5303.55 but sustained the level

of 5300 while Sensex tanked 510 pts and slipped below the crucial level of 18k at

17700. Bank nifty future sliced down 472 pts to end at 10454.95. Aurobindo Pharma

plummeted 25% while Mphasis tumbled 32%. Tata motors, Ranbaxy, Orchid Chemical,

Shree renuka sugars, Chambal fertilizers sliced 8-12%.

India’s annual railway budget is unveiled this week and it has promised to make

investment worth Rs. 57,360 Cr. in FY11-12 though railway stocks like Texmaco sliced

11% while Kalindee rail nirman and Titagarh wagons tumbled 20% each. In recent

economic survey; Indian economy is expected to grow at 8.75% - 9.25% in FY12. It is

also proposed to allow phased FDI in multi brand retail while more key economic

reforms are likely needed.

Global equity markets ended down with major indices ending down 2 - 3% on rising

crude oil prices that hits investor’s sentiments. DJIA ended down 2.1% at 12130 while

Nasdaq ended down 1.8% at 2781. In Euro zone, FTSE was down 1.4% at 6001, DAX

was down 3.25% at 7185 and CAC sliced 2% to end at 4070. U.S jobless claims came

down at 391k vs. 413k and existing home sales up at 5.36m vs. 5.22m. EUR industrial

new orders came up at 2.1% and German consumer climate up at 6.0 vs. 5.8.
