Server LicensingThe Equitrac Office/Express UNIX Print Server is licensed per server. Each server uses a print server license on the Equitrac Office/Express core accounting server. If the number of print servers or devices exceeds the number of licenses you have, the unlicensed components will not record any printing activity.

For information on licensing components with Equitrac Office/Express, refer to the Equitrac Office/Express Administration Guide.

UNIX Print Server TerminologyBefore you install Equitrac Office/Express UNIX Print Server, you should be familiar with the following terms:

UNIX Print Server Term Definition

Equitrac Office/Express printer registration

information about a logical printer definition stored in the Equitrac Office/Express database to track usage. A registration includes a printer name, a user-defined description and the printer’s assigned costs.

physical printer the actual printing device.

print filter the final print queue component on Linux.

print interface the final print queue component on Solaris and HP-UX.

print queue a logical definition that represents a physical printer on a UNIX server.

8 Equitrac Office/Express UNIX Print Server Guide

Integrating Equitrac Office/Express and UNIX ServersThe Equitrac Office/Express UNIX Print Server integrates a UNIX server with the Equitrac Office/Express print tracking environment. You can accomplish this integration by installing a number of cooperating software components on your network. The following table provides an overview of the required components.

Equitrac Office/Express Core Components on a UNIX Server

For additional information on utility programs included with the Equitrac Office/Express UNIX module (eqcascfg, eqaddprinter, eqdeleteprinter, eqviewprinter), see UNIX Utility Programs on page 27.

Equitrac Office/Express Component Integration

eqdred Communicates with the Core Accounting Server service on the Windows server (UNIX version of Equitrac’s Document Routing Engine).

eqprint Handles printing, page counting, details reporting. The print server calls this function for each print job submitted through the LPR printing chain (for example, on Solaris/HP-UX it is eq.interface, on Linux eq.filter). These scripts extract the correct printing info, then call eqprint with the appropriate parameters. eqprint first does the page counting, checks any accounting restrictions or problems, then sends the print transaction to the networked printer.

eqctrl Control script for eqdred. You can run this script with start, stop, restart and status arguments to perform the corresponding action on eqdred. The UNIX RC system also uses this script to automate starting and stopping eqdred when the system changes state (for example, stop, start, reboot, halt). The RC system differs from platform to platform, so the you must create different symbolic links for each platform. For example, some systems have their base directory as /etc/rc.d/init.d and some use /etc/init.d

eq.filter (Linux) eq.interface (Solaris.HP-UX)

Wrapper scripts for processes that communicate with the printers.

Chapter 1: Overview

The Equitrac Office/Express Print ServerThe Equitrac Office/Express print server components perform two functions on the UNIX server: printer control and printer tracking.

Printer ControlOn a UNIX server, the Equitrac Office/Express print server monitors and controls printing activity. When you configure an Equitrac Office/Express print queue, the Equitrac print monitors associated with that queue prevent unauthorized users from accessing network printers. When the print server receives a print request, it checks with the Equitrac Office/Express accounting server to ensure that the user sending the request has a valid printing account. The accounting server checks the Equitrac Office/Express database for the administrator-defined list of valid printing accounts and indicates when print jobs are authorized to proceed.

Printer TrackingThe Equitrac Office/Express print server also monitors printing traffic to determine the size and attributes—such as page color, duplexing, page size, and so on—of each print job. The print server passes this detailed information back to the accounting server. Based on the print job’s page count and document attributes, and the administrator-defined costs assigned to the destination printer, the accounting server calculates printing charges and levies them against the appropriate printing account.

Interaction with UNIXThe following diagram illustrates how Equitrac Office/Express, UNIX, and printing components interact when a network workstation generates a print request, so that the Equitrac database can track the print job.

eqprint sends the job to the printer

LPR calls required script (piosm, eq.interface, eq.filter)

Print job

UNIX Scripts extract print job parameters and call eqprint

eqprint calls eqdred, attempts to count the print, reports print details to CAS

eqdred receives printer and accounts information from CAS

14 Equitrac Office/Express UNIX Print Server Guide

Installation OverviewThere are four steps to installing and configuring a UNIX print server for Equitrac Office/Express on your network:

1 Copy the files to the UNIX server and run the installation program appropriate to your UNIX platform.

2 On the server, go to /usr/local/eq and run setup. This is the script that calls eqcascfg and eqctrl (to enable you to configure the Equitrac Office/Express server) and start the eqdred daemon.

NOTE: You can run eqcascfg at any time to change the Equitrac Office/Express Accounting Server. You must restart eqdred manually after any changes you make with eqcascfg. See Running the Setup Script on page 18 for script details.

3 Define your printers to Equitrac Office/Express using eqaddprinter. This automatically registers your printers into the database on the Core Accounting Server, and these should be immediately visible in System Manager if you refresh the Devices listing in the right pane.

4 Define your printers to the operating system using the same names you used with eqaddprinter.

With most of the UNIX systems this is a two-step process:

a Define the printer.

b Modify it to use the Equitrac Office/Express printing backend.

NOTE: You should first verify that the printer works as expected without Equitrac software in the process, to help eliminate any simple configuration issues, such as if the print stream is not in the correct data format for the printer.

Chapter 3: Printer Configuration

22 Equitrac Office/Express UNIX Print Server Guide

General Printer Configuration (All Platforms)

Identifying the Core Accounting ServerTo configure the port monitors, you need to specify the name of the server hosting the Equitrac Office/Express suite, using the eqcascfg script. An example of this is:

/usr/local/eq/eqcascfg -e your.server.com

You can specify the name of the Equitrac Office/Express server as a fully-qualified name or an IP address.

Adding Printers from the Command LineTo define printers so that Equitrac Office/Express can use them, use the eqaddprinter command, as shown in the following examples.

NOTE: eqdred should be running before you register printers on the UNIX server.

Adding an LPR-based Printer

1 At the command line, type eqaddprinter.

2 Specify the new printer name.

3 Specify the device host name/IP address.

4 Specify whether or not the server should Hold port open.

5 Specify whether the printer is LPR based (in this case, type Y for Yes).

6 Type the queue name to create for this printer.

7 Confirm the printer data using the eqviewprinters command.

Adding a Non-LPR Printer

1 At the command line, type eqaddprinter.

2 Specify the new printer name.

3 Specify the device host name/IP address.

4 Specify whether or not the server should Hold port open.

5 Specify whether the printer is LPR based (in this case, type N for No).

6 Select a manufacturer by number. If your printer manufacturer is not listed, you must know the port number on which the printer accepts jobs. You can then select "9999 Unknown" as the printer manufacturer, and eqaddprinter will prompt for the port number.

7 Specify the model by number.

8 Confirm the printer data using the eqviewprinters command.

Page 23: Equitrac Express 3.0 UNIX Print Server Module Guide · Equitrac Office/Express UNIX Print Server Guide 5 Overview This guide is intended to help you to install and configure the Equitrac

Equitrac Office/Express UNIX Print Server Guide 23

Chapter 3: Printer Configuration

Deleting Printers from the Command LineYou can delete any printer created on this server using the following procedure.

1 At the command line, type eqdeleteprinter.

2 Type the name of printer to delete.

3 Confirm that you want to delete this printer (type Y or N for Yes or No).

Creating Printers on HP-UXThe following example illustrates how to use lpadmin to add a printer called printer1 to the LPR subsystem:

1 Stop the spooler using the command:/usr/sbin/lpshut

2 Add the printer, as shown in this example:/usr/sbin/lpadmin -p printer1 -i/usr/local/eq/eq.interface -v/dev/null

3 Tell the new printer to accept requests:/usr/sbin/accept printer1

4 Enable spooling on the new printer:/usr/bin/enable printer1

5 Re-start the spooler:/usr/sbin/lpsched

To verify that you added the printer successfully, a copy of eq.interface should appear as /etc/lp/interface/printer1.

Page 24: Equitrac Express 3.0 UNIX Print Server Module Guide · Equitrac Office/Express UNIX Print Server Guide 5 Overview This guide is intended to help you to install and configure the Equitrac

Chapter 3: Printer Configuration

24 Equitrac Office/Express UNIX Print Server Guide

Creating Printers on SolarisAdd your printer as you normally would, using lpadmin.

Adding a Printer using lpadmin1 Add the printer. You should specify eq.interface as the interface program for the printer, and then use /

dev/null as the actual device, as shown in this example:/usr/lib/lpadmin -p printer1 -v /dev/null -i /usr/local/eq/eq.interface -I any

The -p parameter identifies the name of the printer. This name must match the printer name given in eqaddprinter.

The -i option points to a script that interprets the incoming job attributes, and passes them to the EQ port monitor.

2 Activate the printer with:/usr/lib/accept printer1

/usr/bin/enable printer1

NOTE: If your installation directory is not /usr/local/eq, you must specify the -d <installpath> parameter to eq.interface.

Chapter 3: Printer Configuration

Creating Printers on LinuxFollow these instructions to define printers on Linux using CUPS.

CAUTION: Before you create printers, ensure that the version of CUPS you use is 1.1.23 or later. The version of CUPS that ships with some Linux platforms will not create printers correctly.

1 Install the Equitrac CUPS backend.

Copy the equitrac file that matches your platform to the backend directory of your CUPS installation such as /usr/lib/cups/backend. Ensure that permission and ownership settings on the file are identical to those on the backends provided with your CUPS installation.

2 Run the following command to restart CUPS and allow it to discover the new backend.cp /usr/local/eq/cups/equitrac /usr/lib/cups/backend

chown root:root /usr/lib/cups/backend/equitrac

/etc/init.d/cups restart

3 Install printers.

a Launch the CUPS Admin web site at http://localhost:631

b Switch to the Printers tab.

c From the bottom of the printer list, select Add Printers.

d Enter the printer Name, Location, and Description, then click Continue.

e Select the device for the printer. This should be: Document Accounting (Equitrac)

f For the Device URI, use equitrac://printername where printername is the name of the printer as defined to the system and to CUPS. This should be the same name as was used in step "d".

g After adding the device URI, select the type of device. You can continue installing your printer as you normally would under CUPS.

4 Define each printer.

Run the eqaddprinter utility, and ensure that the printer name(s) match the name(s) used on the CUPS Admin web site.

Chapter 3: Printer Configuration

26 Equitrac Office/Express UNIX Print Server Guide

Defining Printers Using LPRng1 Define the printer to Equitrac Office/Express using eqaddprinter.

2 Edit the /etc/printcap.local file and add an entry of the following form:printer1 | PRINTER1:\

:sd=/var/spool/lpd/printer1:\

:lp=/dev/null:\

:af=printername:\

:filter=/usr/local/eq/lprng/eq.filter:

where printername is the same name that you used in step 1.

3 Create the spool directory /var/spool/lpd/printer1 and make sure it is owned by lp.

4 Restart lpd.

Printer Registration ErrorsAfter creating your printers, if you encounter “Printer not registered” errors, it is likely due to a mismatch in the “registered” system name through System Manager, and the System Name that eqdred sends to the Equitrac Office/Express accounting server when validating the user.

The name you use in System Manager for registering a printer to the accounting server must match identically.

eqdred reports the SystemName as the value that is also returned if you run “hostname” on the UNIX server. If this name is not accessible from System Manager then you must add a hosts file entry in system32\drivers\etc\hosts, or modify the hostname on the UNIX box.
