Objectives of Equipment Management

1. Identify several types of medical devices used in the home care. 2. Describe HCW role in promoting patient safety with medical devices used in home. 3. Explain why reporting problems with medical devices in the home environment is important. 4. Describe the steps to take to report an adverse event or problem with a medical device used in the home.

Equipment Management in Home Care

• Make list of all equipment & its current location.

• Do the maintenance check on each equipment before delivery to patient home.

• Backup for life sustaining equipment at home health care office e.g., ventilator, suction machine.

• All HCWs should be cross-trained in equipments of various modalities.

Safety Equipment• HCW should know

different device operations like

iv pump, ventilator, Straps/Lifting Pullies.

• Wheelchair accessible locations.

• Home Alarms, Medic Alert devices.

Types of Medical Device Problems

• Defects.• Software problems.• Failure to work as intended/malfunction.• Instructions/labeling/packaging issues.• Interactions with other devices, or other

electronic equipment in the home.• Use errors.• Human factors issues.• Combinations of the above.

Oxygen Safety Precautions• Keep the oxygen at least 3 meters from any open

flame or heat source.• Do not smoke or let anyone else smoke near the

oxygen equipment.• Avoid using anything flammable near the oxygen,

including petrol, cleaning fluid, and aerosol cans or sprays such as fresheners or hairspray.

• Do not allow oil or grease to come into contact with oxygen supply devices. This also includes petroleum jelly.

• Check that all electrical equipment in the vicinity of the oxygen is properly grounded (earthed).

Oxygen Safety Precautions

• Avoid using electrical appliances such as hairdryers and razors while oxygen is in use.

• Oxygen concentrator should be inspected and serviced regularly according to the supplier's instructions.

• Store oxygen cylinders in an upright secure position in a well-ventilated area.

• Handle oxygen equipment with care to avoid damaging cylinders.

• Secure and transport oxygen cylinders correctly. • Use the correct pressure gauge and regulator.

the event? • What happened while the patient or

HCW was using the device?• What was the problem with the

device(s) involved?

• What is the purpose for using of device?• What are the names of the

manufacturers of the devices involved?• What are the relevant manufacturer

device identification numbers? –Serial, model, lot, catalog, and any

other specific information• What did HCW do to solve the problem? - Call Maintenance.
