2018 February~ Letter from our Senior Pastor
Exciting things are happening at Epworth! It’s been a great joy for me to witness so many people working on behalf of God’s Kingdom.
Just yesterday, 25 people gathered in our church to be trained to contact every household of our church. This is something we have never done.
They will be inquiring about the household, seeing if they received recent mailings from the church and asking each one to join in a mighty prayer process seeking God’s will for them and for their church. The thought of each household earnestly seeking God’s direction in their life each day is a powerful image with exciting potential.
Jesus asked us to ‘seek first the Kingdom of God’ and that is exactly what these Prayer Team Contact members will be urging all to do. The results of this for our church are immeasurable.
Thank you to all the Prayer Team Contacts and to our entire church family for opening yourself to God’s will in your life.
In Gratitude, Rev. Vicky Starnes

Staff Thank You ~February 2018
Dear Epworth – My family and I are sincerely grateful for the generous gift given to us this year by the Epworth congregation! Your signs of love and affirmation are so appreciated. The work I do is because of a call God placed on my heart over 33 years ago—your prayers and gifts help to sustain me in fulfilling that call and ministry. Thank you! Blessings, Vicky
To my Epworth Family,
Please accept my sincerest appreciation for your overall support of our church staff and our ministries with you through your congregational Christmas gift to us. Thank you so much. Glenn Catley
Brothers and Sisters,
Many years ago I heard a song called “The Secret of Christmas.” The lyric that struck me was, “It’s not the things you do at Christmastime, but the Christmas things you do all year through.” While the song may not be familiar to you, it seems to be the unspoken mission here at Epworth. By choosing to Explore Faith and Embrace Community, this congregation does those “Christmas things” every day of the year, and many of you involved in multiple missions know it firsthand. None of this is meant to diminish the extravagant generosity you’ve shown the staff this Christmas! But, I can’t acknowledge this wonderful thing “you do at Christmastime” without also noting that the blessings here never stop. My heart thanks every one of you daily for being the hands and feet of Christ in our community. I am filled with joy to call you my brothers and sisters! Doug
To My Epworth Family, Thank you so much for your kind Christmas gift. I find my time here at Epworth with all of you a special blessing! To work with all of you and for this wonderful church as we “Explore Faith and Embrace Community” is exciting. I continue to be excited every day about the possibilities that exist here in our church! Peace, Mickie
Thank you from my house to yours. You continue to amaze me with your generocity during the Christmas season. Much love to all - Darlene
Dear Epworth Family, Your generosity is always astounding. Thank you all for your “Gift of Love” this Christmas season. I appreciate each and every one of you and look forward to the years ahead. With much love, Deb
Epworth Congregation, Thank you for your Christmas gift. It is an honor and privilege to work at Epworth. I am grateful for the opportunity to support the staff, congregation, and all who enter through Epworth’s doors. You are a blessing and your generous Christmas gift is greatly appreciated. Diana Young
Thank you so much for the Christmas bonus that I received this year. It’s always unexpected and very much appreciated! I am grateful that I work in a place where I am recognized for the job that I do and rewarded with support, whether it be financially or through kind words and actions. I hope 2018 is a very happy year for you and your families. Peace, Betsy Plowman
I would like to say thank you to Epworth and to the congregation for your thoughtful and selfless act of giving. To receive a gift at the end of the year is appreciated very much. It also tells me in my heart how much I am appreciated. Again, thank you all so much. Mike Harrigan
I would like to thank the congregation for the very kind Christmas gift. It has been a pleasure working at Epworth this past year, and I look forward to the coming year! Linda Hess
I would like to thank the congregation for my Christmas surprise . I really do appreciate it. Thanks , Cathy Crawford

Gingerbread Contest The first annual Rehoboth Beach Gingerbread Contest was held at Epworth on December 9 & 10. Along with creative gingerbread projects, the event featured a train garden supplied by Bill Moore, a quilt display from the members of Ocean Waves Quilt Guild, Santa Claus, portrayed by Kenny Mahan, a visit from Angelic Touch Therapy Animals miniature horses, and The Gingerbread Cafe.
Four professionals and 11 amateurs entered the contest. Danielle Panarello from The Clubhouse at Baywood Greens was named the winning baker in the Professional Division. Danielle created a replica of Matt's Fish Camp in Lewes. Winners in the Amateur Division were determined by a people's choice vote. The adult division was won by Nancy Brooks for her creation, "Beautiful Rehoboth Beach Bandstand." The family division was won by Laura, Jared, and Lincoln Dye. The non-profit category was won by Epworth's Revolution Youth Group. Their entry garnered 100 votes, equaling $100 for their organization. Event sponsors included: Daria Horn, 'The Cake Lady,' Cape Gazette, Berkshire Hathaway Home Services, Angelic Touch Therapy Animals, and Snyder's Candy of Rehoboth.
Funds from the event will benefit Christmas Joy! 365, the Good Sam Program, The West Rehoboth Children & Youth Program, and homeless students in the Cape Henlopen School District.
This year's event is scheduled for Saturday, December 8th. Find more information on the website www.gingerbreadjoy.org and on F a c e b o o k : R e h o b o t h B e a c h Gingerbread Contest.
Fundraising News—Thank You As we close our Epworth Fundraising activities and transform into Epworth Fellowship Events, I would like to give you some statistics about what our 2 years of fundraising has done for Epworth.

were $3,313
The net profit from these events reduced our mortgage by $17,000!
We also helped our Missions & Music departments in their ministry with $500!
Many thanks to all who consistently purchased cards to reduce our mortgage…..please stop by the Gift Card Table to purchase our remaining inventory. Card sales will continue until February 12th.
Christmas Joy We want to thank everyone who contributed to Christmas Joy 365 this year. We provided for 52 families and 146 children. We do however have a big
concern. Some of us have been elves for over twenty years and can say that 2017 was exhausting. We did not have nearly the volunteers we have had in the past. There was many a meeting where it was only the three elves’ shopping and wrapping last minute gifts. Thankfully we had some new faces helping us this year. The wrapping Saturday was the lowest attendance in years and it took us two days to wrap all the presents. We need more than 7 people to sort and organize gifts and the food the day before we deliver. On delivery day we had 2 members show up. We had to ask an office volunteer to help Larry load the trucks.
Elf Larry is stepping back after this year so we will need someone to help coordinate food and delivery. Marti Garrett was a great new addition this year and she has agreed to take over wrapping. Carol Lewis is going part-time and is training Kathy Hartsock to be family coordinator. Lori Watson is hoping to go back to doing just sorting and delivery. Sue Brenton is in charge of communications.
We need many more hands in order to make 2018 Christmas Joy as successful as years past.

Social Justice: Fair trade coffee, teas, chocolate bars, and olive oil products are sold by the Social Justice Pathway the first Sunday of every month. Look for the fair trade sales table in Fellowship Hall. What’s the best way to store coffee? Let’s start with understanding the enemies of coffee: Heat, moisture and air destroy coffee freshness and remove the vibrant taste that coffee fans love. It’s not just flavor that is destroyed from improper storage; coffee’s antioxidant qualities start to deteriorate as well. So, storing coffee in an airtight container away from the stove and toaster is a good place to start. Some coffee experts advise that using an opaque, airtight glass or ceramic container is optimum, but tin is not a bad choice. If you don’t have a canister, you can close up the bag the coffee was purchased in with a clip or rubber band, and put it in a resealable plastic bag. Place your container in a cool location away from heat and light. In the refrigerator or freezer? Putting coffee in a refrigerator is the worst thing you can do. Putting coffee in and out of the freezer daily is also not good. But, if you will not be using coffee for two weeks or more, placing it in an airtight container and freezing it until near its
time of use is not a bad idea. The damage is done with multiple freeze/thaw cycles. When coffee is roasted, it releases carbon dioxide and does so over several days. It is important to purchase coffee beans and ground coffee that is packaged in a valved, sealed bag. The one way valve (a small circle on the bag) allows the CO2 to escape but prevents air and moisture from entering the bag. The sealed bag with a valve is superior to vacuum packaging because the CO2 naturally emitted by freshly roasted coffee cannot escape vacuum packaging. Why does the Social Justice Pathway at Epworth sell coffee and other fair trade products? The notion of social justice includes the idea that small family farmers deserve a living wage, which is sometimes not provided by the major corporations that dominate our food supply in the United States. Foods provided by our fair trade partner, the Equal Exchange Coop, assure the farmer gets a fair price for his or her labor. “Profits” from sale of fair trade items at Epworth go to support the work of the Social Justice Pathway and also to UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief). Among the current projects at
UMCOR is assisting the Methodist Church of Puerto Rico (MCPR or Iglesia Metodista de Puerto Rico) with hurricane recovery. UMCOR started coordinating with MCPR just prior to Hurricane Irma in September and ramped up after Hurricane Maria hit a few weeks later. The first UMCOR official arriving in Puerto Rico after Maria hand carried 30 pounds of badly needed lithium batteries. Soon thereafter UMCOR provided 12 satellite phones so that MCPR officials could c o m m u n i c a t e w i t h i s o l a t e d communities and areas on the island. Since then, an UMCOR Advance Response Team assisted MCPR with assessment and planning before the first wave of skilled Early Response Teams arrived. Check www.umcor.org for more information on this disaster recovery effort.

Special Announcements ~ February 2018
January 15, 2018
Dear Pastor Vicky and the Epworth UMC congregation, “We always give thanks to God for all of you and mention you in our prayers, constantly 3remembering before our God and Father your work of
faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.” 1 Thessalonians 1:2-3
These words of Paul to the Church in Thessalonica speaks our heart’s message to you as we journey into 2018. Your prayers have sustained us as your Global Ministries Missionaries during the last 3 years and your financial support has allowed us, and many other missionaries, to live out God’s call to people in central Congo and around the world. We do give thanks for you! “You are always there with us” as we work with the people of Congo bringing hope, encouragement, and God’s love in tangible ways through the various projects of the Congo Partnership and our work as your missionaries. You have helped bring sight to the blind, feed the hungry and help them learn to grow their own food through our agriculture program, educate our children in mind and spirit, provide fresh water for the thirsty, and so much more. We pray that in some small way our relationship with you has brought joy, fulfillment, and purpose to you and your congregation. We never dreamed in our “retirement” that God would call us to fulltime missionary service. The last three years, and Jonathan’s relationship with the Congo through the Congo Partnership since 1998, have changed our lives. We have been humbled by the love and support so many have offered us in this journey. We now believe God is calling us to yet another phase in our lives and ministry. Effective March 31, 2018, we will be retiring from Global Ministries as fulltime missionaries to Congo. We will continue to work on behalf of the Congo Partnership in a volunteer status traveling each year to Congo hopefully leading Volunteer in Mission Teams there and helping churches in the US stay connected with what God is doing through the Congo Partnership. For those of you who have been supporting us as missionaries through the Global Ministries Advance, we are so grateful. As we move into a new phase for our ministry, we hope you will prayerfully consider supporting various Congo Partnership Projects under the capable leadership of our Congolese colleagues. 100% of your giving goes to those projects. If you need information and/or would like to speak with us about this, please let us know so we can contact you. Some of you may wish to work with Global Ministries to support another missionary. If we hear of others that will be going to serve in the Central Congo Episcopal Area we will inform you. Our plan is to continue our work in the U.S. speaking on behalf of God’s work through the Congo Partnership and we would be honored to continue that relationship with you and your congregation. We covet your prayers for the Congo as the country goes through a challenging time economically and politically. Spiritually, God continues to sustain them with a joy beyond measure. We have been most blessed to learn from them in so many ways as they have nurtured and challenged our faith. Thank you again for your support. Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns. We know God is leading the Congo and us into the future.
In gratitude,
May the winds of the Spirit bless you with abiding joy and peace! Rev. Dr. Jonathan Baker & Donna Baker Global Minisries Missionaries to the Central Congo Episcopal Area 1980 Odessa Circle, The Villages, FL 32162 [email protected]; [email protected]
