Reflecting the title of the Bob Dylan song ‘The Times They Are A-changin’ the Centre continues to evolve with each passing year and this year is no exception. The Centre has appointed a new Director in the form of Professor Robert Dorey who last year directed the academic programme. He took over formally from Professor Julie Yeomans at the start of October with the arrival of our latest intake of Researchers. Julie has now taken on a strategic role within the University’s equity and diversity group, but will continue to be involved in the Centre through ongoing supervision of Research Engineers.

This year saw the recruitment of 9 new students, with 3 of them being associated PhD students. The Associate PhD scheme is a route by which PhD students can gain some of the benefits of being part of the EngD cohort and receive Institute of Leadership and Management training.

At the same time we have seen the successful thesis submission and examinations of many of our 2011 and 2012 cohort Research Engineers.

A big change for our Research Engineers is the bringing forward and reformatting of the Confirmation examinations process which will come into effect for the 2015 cohort. We’ve brought the process forward to month 18 of the EngD to allow us to support and guide our Research Engineers more effectively in the critical early stages of the doctorate and allow them to more fully focus on their studies in the later stages. The format of the examinations will also be changing so that the process becomes a greater focal part of EngD. Instead of holding individual examinations throughout the year the Research Engineers will all come together for a single Confirmation day allowing them to share a common experiences.

So while the times ‘are-a-changin’ the Centre remains committed to maximising the opportunities offered to our Research Engineers to ensure that they can become productive members of the scientific and engineering community.

This year we welcome six new Research Engineers and three PhD students who joined our programme on 1st October 2016

After four years as a highly successful Head of Department of Mechanical Engineering Sciences, Professor Julie Yeomans has accepted a secondment of one year to oversee the work of the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion team within the HR Services group of departments. This is an extremely important role strategically in the University in which Julie will, amongst other tasks, drive forward the Athena Swan work in the University.

Appointments

Professor Paul Smith has been appointed Executive Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences. Professor Smith will be responsible for nine departments in the faculty and will have a leading role in the formulation of the academic strategy. After joining Surrey in 1986 as a lecturer, Professor Smith was promoted to a personal chair in 1997 and

served as head of the School of Engineering from 2004 – 2007.

Paul has been involved in supervising Research Engineers on both the University of Surrey EngD programmes (the EngD in Environmental Technology as well as MiNMaT) – he started supervising his first EngD nearly 20 years ago. He has seen 14 REs through to completion as a supervisor and retains an involvement with a number of ongoing projects. Not surprisingly, he is a strong advocate of the EngD model, in particular that it enables high quality research to be carried out in an industrial context, while shortening the path to impact, and delivers high-level graduates for industry and other organisations. As well as his ongoing links to MiNMaT, Paul is external examiner for the CDT in Composites Manufacturing at the University of Bristol.

CongratulationsCongratulations to Chris and Gemma White who were married on 15th August 2016

Baby William Whitworth arrived on 27th September 2016.

Congratulations to Emily and Pete on the birth of their first child.
