Module 3
“Green” - What is it?
Green Infrastructure / Low Impact Development
• Not traditional storm water management – rapid conveyance of water via storm sewers to surface waters
• Green Infrastructure- practices designed & constructed for infiltration of water into ground water table.– retains and promotes rainfall infiltration
– mimics natural infiltration
Design ConsiderationsWhat we are learning
• Protecting the green practice while normal construction is progressing?
– Phasing BMP’s
• Delineating green areas (signage, fencing, etc.)
• Prevent construction traffic from compacting area
– Installing green practice when appropriate
• Allowing plant material to establish
– Protection up to 100yr storm
Compaction Infiltration
Avoiding traditional construction
methods (Compaction)
Keeping large equipment outside
of infiltration area, more labor
intensive.
Phasing: When to Install?Follow Plans
Protect the Investment
• Ensuring controls are in place and maintained to prevent sediment from green practice until stabilization is achieved.– Sediment prohibits infiltration
Protect the Investment
• Maintaining controls to keep sediment out of infiltration area.
Subcontractor Communication
• Educate / Train subs.
• Allowing pollutants/ sediment into green practice will prohibit infiltration and result in reconstructing green practice.
