customer? I wanted to know more andthis was as easy as a visit to the manufac-turer of these tracker systems, AllEarthRenewables.

It turned out they were interested innew dealers and I was interested in theirproduct. But I needed to play with thenumbers first: cost per watt to install vs. astandard pole mount; design time; instal-lation time; power production. In sum, Iwanted to know the

SOLAR ELECTRIC INSTALLATIONScome in a few different forms, and as a PVinstaller for several years, I used mainlyroof mounts and fixed pole mounts. Mybusiness was doing well, and my customerswere satisfied with our work. Interest in atracking system would come up occasion-ally, but living in the Northeast with arough climate most of the year, I didn’ttrust the reliability of the tracker systemsthat were available in the past.

But one day I was asked for a quotefrom a customer on a PV system to meetthe electricity needs of their home. I andanother local installer had come up withthe same number. To our surprise, wewere out-priced by the dual axis AllSunTracker. For the power production, easeof installation, and functionality, there wasno way we could compete.

What was this tracker? How was itsuch a good deal for both installer and Continued on page 8

Would installing this product work for mybusiness? Would it benefit our cus-tomers?

cost per first year kW hrs because thistracker was going to cost a bit more butproduce more power than a fixed mount.

The numbers proved it: yes, we wouldall benefit. My experience installing sev-eral tracker systems verifies that the costof a tracker is nearly the same as a fixedpole mount. There’s no design time be-cause the AllEarth engineers figured outthe system completely. The installationtime is definitely less than fixed polemounts because the whole system shipsas a complete package directly to the jobsite. Very soon the customer is produc-ing power from the sun. Lastly, electricitygenerated from the tracker is 35-40%more than a roof mount or a fixed polemount because the array follows the sunthroughout the day. Furthermore, the reliability of this

tracking system exceeded my expecta-tions. Unlike other trackers, the AllSunmodels have been designed to be “intelli-gent” systems with GPS and wirelesstechnology that responds to any harshweather. In high winds, they lay flatrather than stand up like a big sail. Inheavy snowfall, they

tip and dump the snow load. The trackersalso come with a monitoring systemthrough which their performance is dis-played online for the life of the tracker. Itis then monitored by the manufacturer, customer, and installer. My business has grown by 25% as a di-

rect result of adding these trackers to mydesign options. Customers want to reducetheir reliance on traditional methods ofpower production, but they also want thebest product they can have to produce themost power possible. When they learnabout a cost-effective tracker, they go for it.

Easy InstallationsFor the installer, one of the best things

about a complete tracker package is thetime saved getting a job done. From pro-ject proposal to job completion, my plan-ning and installation time is significantlyreduced. Installation time is shortened because

the tracker install is predictable. Thoughthere are two models,

my business. Overall, I save about sixhours of design and planning time per job. That’s six hours I can add to sales and in-stallation for another job.Another benefit of installing this dual-

axis tracker comes from the perspectiveof liability. As an industry, PV engineersdevote considerable effort to ensuring aroof mount does the least amount of dam-age to a home. And in many cases, roofmounts really won’t work for the cus-tomer because the roof is old and willneed to be replaced soon or, even morecommon, is the fact that very fewrooflines face south. With a tracker, there’s no roof work. And no roof workmeans no scaffolding, no penetrations, noobstacles like dormers or skylights—be-ing off the roof with a complete system toinstall makes a job easy and productive.

The trackers simplify and streamlinesolar: from design and installation rightthrough to a working PV system with agood return on investment that customerscan rely on for years to come.

the installation process is the same. As abusiness owner, this is great. I have moretime to devote to more systems during theconstruction season here in the Northeast, and so my business has grown. My planning and design time is also re-

duced when I go with a tracker. There’sless planning time because my proposals

for customers are easy to write and ex-plain. And there is no design time. WhenI plan a custom design, I have to sourceand purchase all of the individual partsand pieces, checking and rechecking myorders from multiple suppliers. With anAllSun Tracker, I call AllEarth, order themodel I need, and the next day it ships to

colocation, cloud computing, data analyt-ics and disaster recovery services.

But a free hand in specifying vital hard-ware —such as uninterruptible power sup-plies (UPSs) — doesn’t eliminate the hardgrind of evaluating technologies, vendorsand products. Panozzo and his team spentmore than a year on the road, visitingmanufacturers and touring installations, before selecting a UPS supplier for thegreenfield project.

Eventually, Panozzo found himselfworking closely with Jim Hughes, the vet-eran sales manager for central US, Cana-dian and strategic national accounts atMitsubishi Electric Power Products.

This fall, with two 500-kW Mitsubishi9900B units in place, and 16 more ontrack for installation, Panozzo and Hughesboth expressed satisfaction with the DataRealty selection process and its outcome. They agreed to share a few lessons withEPS readers, and together came up with ashort list of questions that any manager inthe market for a UPS system should askbefore cutting a purchase order.

Question 1: You say yourproduct is efficient, But,specifically, at what loads does it start to get efficient?

Tom Panozzo: “This is a great way tostart the conversation. We insisted on anefficiency curve demonstration fromevery vendor we talked to. A lot of UPSsare efficient when fully loaded, but in thedata center world they never are fullyloaded. Other industries might load themup to 80, 90, 100 percent; in our industrythey seldom get above 60. Whatever in-dustry you are in, ask the vendor, “Doyour efficiency numbers

A BLANK SHEET OF PAPERand two words: quality and efficiency. That’s where the design for the just-com-pleted Data Realty, LLC, data center gotstarted.

In selecting mission-critical facility sys-tems, “We had the rare opportunity towork from the ground up,” says TomPanozzo, chief technical officer for theSouth Bend, Indiana-based provider of

apply to the loads I’ll actually be runningat my facility?”

Jim Hughes: “A related concern is thatevery potential supplier is going to showyou graphics that indicate high efficiency. The real question is, ‘Can you prove it?’ “Your vendor should be able to bring

you to a test facility (like ours, in westernPennsylvania) and show you how his UPSperforms under realistic conditions. Youshould have access to case studies andclient contact information, for furtherproof. And you really want to ask for anefficiency guarantee.”

Question 2: Are your UPSsreally 100 percent load-rated?

Tom Panozzo: “A lot of manufactur-ers might describe their product as a 500-kW UPS, but if you actually ran it at 500kW you might find yourself very un-happy. Just for example, I know that Mit-subishi’s units are slightly underrated, soyou could run them at 100 percent loadall day long.

“Whether that’s practical or not is aside issue; sometimes we find ourselvesdoing things we don’t want to do. Some-times you end up in situations you could-n’t anticipate. But I’m confident that if weever — against our better judgment —had to run our Mitsubishi UPSs at 100percent load, they would hold it, becausethey’re rated to do so.”

Jim Hughes: “There’s a lot of market-ing hype out there. Be careful. What somepublished data really indicate is that, whenpush comes to shove, the product maymeet the requirement. Before youbuy, you need a warranty, you need guar-antees, you need to see failure data. “You want a product that’s conserva-

tively engineered to perform to specifica-

tion all the time. That has to be baked intothe technology — into the IGBT, logic, and sensing capabilities. “Step load performance can tell you a

lot, even if it’s unlikely to happen in thefield. Ask how the UPS would performgoing from 0 percent load to 100 percent. You should see little to no disruption onthe load sine wave. If the technologyyou’re looking at can do this without bor-rowing from the battery, you’ll get betterbattery life.”When selecting a UPS, you need to test

the UPS to verify that the technology doesnot rely on the battery system during astep load. Below is test data depicting9900B UPS step load response with thebattery disconnected. (insert graphic:StepLoadOutputVoltage.jpg)

Question 3: Power factor: Doesyour UPS operate at unity?

Tom Panozzo: “On other projects, I’verun into nominally 300 kVA UPSs thatwere actually rated at just 260 KW, sothey weren’t unity. The data center worldlives by the number of kilowatts we cansell, and our calculations usually comedown to the amount of power you’ll beable to deliver, and how much computingpower you can support. UPS manufactur-ers usually publish the bigger number —‘Our UPS is 300 kVA.’ — but that be-comes quite irrelevant if the other num-ber is only 260 KW.” “The Mitsubishi 9900Bs, for instance,

are unity power-factor UPSs, so their 300kVA really does mean 300 KW. Andwhen it all comes down to dollars andcents, the kilowatt number is the one thatmatters – it’s critical, and it makes a bigdifference to your bottom line.”Jim Hughes: “Tom nailed this one. If

the design is at unity, your UPS will pro-vide more KW to the load. That’s whatmattered to Data Realty. They didn’t careabout kVA — they wanted to know howmuch power they could get.”

Question 4: What can you tellme about your operatingfailures?

Tom Panozzo: “I was impressed by thefact that Mitsubishi actually publishestheir UPS module operating failures. Thatspeaks volumes. I can think of a lot ofUPS manufacturers who, if they publishedtheir failures, would be

true all through the total life of the sys-tem — in service support, parts support, and engineering support. “So Tom asked about customers who

could vouch for us. And we were able togive him contact information for severalhigh-profile clients, and they were morethan excited to talk about what we’vedone.”

out of business tomorrow. “So don’t hesitate to ask the vendor,

‘As a company, do you track your fail-ures? Is that information available to meas a client? And can I see it before I buyanything?’ These are key questions.Everybody has failures.“Quite frankly, the Mitsubishi docu-

mentation was a key component of ourdecision to buy from them. First of all, they’re up-front enough to provide it. Infact, they offered it before I could ask forit. And second, it’s just damn impressive, because their failures amount to almostnone.”

Jim Hughes: “We trust our machinesso much that we showed Tom exactlywhat’s gone on over the last eight years. That’s unique in the industry: failureanalyses for every unit in the field, everyfailure we’ve had since 2006. It might in-volve a device, a human interface, anLCD screen, a capacitor, things like that. “At the end of the day, our failure rate

is extraordinarily low. And, more impor-tant, none of the few failures that we havehad ever dropped or even jeopardized aclient load.”

Question 5: How is yoursupport service?

Tom Panozzo: “This is the one I al-

ways ask. Service is so vitally important— you need to have confidence in it be-fore you close the deal. Your suppliershould be able to quantify his level ofservice by answering follow-up ques-tions like these: ‘How long does it taketo get me a part I might need?’ ‘Howlong will a service technician take toreach my site?’ ‘Can we buy a spareskit?’ ‘Can you recommend which partsyour tech will want us to have on handwhen he arrives, so we can pre-buy themproactively?’ ‘Do your techs travel withparts on the truck, or do they show upand then have to call in and have themsent out?’”

Jim Hughes: “This tends to be afront-loaded business, where the focusis on the initial design and installation. What happens frequently is the customergets a lot of attention before the pur-chase. And then, once you buy, all thosevendor people who were so interestedsort of disappear.

“The Data Realty team, for instance, had a very short lead time, so we allknew that when the equipment came tothe site, they’d have to install, start up,and commission it to meet a deadline. To do that, they were going to need sig-nificant support from their partners onthe manufacturing side. That would hold
