Epoxy resins can be utilized in machinery grouting and chocking in a variety of industries and applications. In addition to equipment foundations they can be used as a filler material in for example stern tube installations or as protective coating against corrosion and wear. Using epoxy ensures performance and reliability while increasing service longevity and lowering operating costs.

QuantiServ has gained considerable expertise in epoxy resin chocking and grouting service, both in the marine industry and on industrial applications.

In addition to the material, our skilled engineers can provide you with the service you need. We offer a wide range of turn-key chocking and grouting solutions starting from design (chocking planning and calculations), extending to supply, support, application and ending to final hardness testing and certification.

And bear in mind this is not only for service business but for new-build and industry as well! Whatever is your application, we can help you.

Epoxy resins are pourable compounds that become hard and durable once they have cured.

Compared to traditional cast iron or steel chocks, epoxy resins offer the following advantages:

z The installation is fast and straight-forward. No machining of the foundation is required.

z The contact area will be almost 100%, even on rough and uneven surfaces as resin fills the voids.

z Using epoxy enables keeping precise alignment of the equipment for their lifetime reducing the risk of breakdowns. This results in a low specific pressure, which in turn reduces the risks of fretting.

z Unlike rubber (resilient) mounts, epoxy resins are resistant to a wide range of chemicals.

z They are very durable in harsh environments, involving both physical and thermal shock. Resins do not corrode and if applied properly will last the entire lifetime of the equipment or structure.

z High vibration dampening efficiency

WORLD CLASS MATERIALS FOR MARINE PROJECTSAt QuantiServ we work with world class suppliers like ITW. The main products used are Chockfast Orange for marine, Chockfast Red for industrial and Phillyclad for coating.

We are the official dealer for these and other ITW chocking and grouting materials in Italy and Sweden and work with other distributors in other locations.

CHOCKFAST® Orange (PR-610TCF) is a specially formulated 100% solids, two component inert filled casting compound developed for use as a chocking or grouting material. Chockfast is designed to withstand severe marine and industrial environments involving a high degree of both physical and thermal shock. The compound is non-shrinking and has very high impact and compressive strength.

Industrial groutingEpoxy resins can be used in a wide range of industrial applications, both indoors and outdoors. The industrial applications QuantiServ has worked on most frequently are the fixation of crane rails and equipment or skid foundations. We have also references from petrochemical industry on compressor grouting.

Epoxy grouting compound can be used to grout large machinery and to support soleplates in all types of foundations providing extremely high compressive and impact strength. This along with negligible shrinkage makes it ideal for installing critically aligned machinery within very close tolerances.

Compared to normal grouting cement, epoxy grouting compounds have superior resistance to fatigue, chemicals, like oil and vibrations, and can also cover big areas in a single pour. Due to these reasons and to its strong bond to metal and concrete it can also be used on top of concrete to provide protection against chemicals to the basic foundation.

We are able to carry out a very wide range of resin jobs on a turn-key basis. Any inspections, lifting work, calculations, laser alignment, etc., can all be arranged by us, you can leave it to us to take care of.

FROM PLANS TO INSTALLED PRODUCTS FOR SHIPYARDS AND SHIP OWNERS

Equipment foundationsOne of the basic applications of resin is for the foundation of machinery and equipment on board ships. The resin compound can be used under diesel and gas engines, reduction gears, generators, compressors, pumps, bearing blocks, crane rails and numerous other applications.

Epoxy resins have all but replaced cast iron chocks today due to their cost effectiveness and ease of installation.

Resin is used to fill the gap between equipment bed and foundation rails, maintaining the precise alignment previously set. Epoxy chocking compound is poured into containment dams and allowed to fully cure in order to achieve the required hardness grade. The curing time depends on the temperature so the hardness can be reached for example in 24 hours @ 70°F (21°C).

CoatingCoating is used to protect shafts like propulsion shafts, shaft couplings and rudder shafts from seawater corrosion and wear. This happened when the design of a vessel mandates that the propeller shaft lies exposed to open seawater and thus is subject to electrochemical corrosion.

Properly applied glass-reinforced epoxy laminate is the most effective and long- lasting solution for rotating shafts. The application typically consists of 5 layers of epoxy resin and 4 layers of fiberglass tape alternatively applied on the shaft surface and allowed to cure, forming a high strength epoxy fiberglass coating.

Resin injectionIn comparison to the traditional time consuming and intensive method of interference fitting, installing stern tubes with epoxy resin is a straight-forward process. The correctly aligned stern tube is temporarily held in place in an oversized bore with jacking screws.

The void between the stern tube and the ship’s hull is filled up with epoxy resin. To avoid air inclusions, the epoxy resin is usually pumped into the void from below while the air escapes through a venting bore at the top. We use a special pump due to the high requirements for the durability of the pump during the application of resin.

Once the epoxy has cured, the stern tube and bearing bushes are securely locked in place. A seawater and oil resistant sealant is applied on the exposed edges after curing time completion and damming removal. The jacking screws can then be removed.
