We chose the word asset because it implies value - rather than an artifact that is stored away. In PebblePad, an asset is anything created, recorded or uploaded by a user. For example, an asset could be uploaded media evidence captured through the PebblePad app or an entire showcase portfolio. An asset can also be an aggregation of multiple assets.

It can be tricky scoping out the requirements for any technology platform - eportfolio is certainly no exception. Invariably, different products will have different feature sets and different companies will offer different support options. Sometimes, a company will have a completely different conception of what eportfolio means to that of the scoping organisation. Indeed, here at PebblePad, we often hear stories about organisations finding the right ‘showcase portfolio’ platform only to discover it doesn‘t quite cut it when it comes to using portfolio for formative and summative assessment. Equally, we hear tales of universities and other organisations finding the right tools for assessment but discovering that the platform lacks capability when it comes to guiding and structuring learning. Factor in things like integration capability and administrative tools and it’s no wonder a good requirements analysis takes time.

By creating this guide, we’ve tried to save you a little ‘scoping time’ by providing an overview of the kind of things you might like to consider if you’re thinking about implementing eportfolio, regardless of scale. You’ll no doubt find that some of the ideas contained within this guide are framed through our lens, but we like to think of it as an ‘expert lens’ - we have, after all, spent the past 15 years building and successfully implementing an award-winning eportfolio platform with a lot of very satisfied customers. However, since the features presented in this guide form a big part of thePebblePad platform, you may just want to spend a minute familiarising yourself with some of the basic PebblePad terminology below. Enjoy

Just like assets, resources (which take the form of templates and workbooks in PebblePad) can be any one of a number of things. For example, a resource could be a simple in-built experience template to help learners record an activity or event. Equally, a resource could be an entire placement framework (workbook) containing a host of reflective templates, blog placeholders and space for mentor feedback.
