Personal Statement

I am a very dedicated and hard working individual who really wants to make a difference. I started out working at a real estate attorney’s office and was going to college for business. While I was working in business I kept thinking there was something I could be doing to contribute to my community in a more positive and direct way. I was then offered an opportunity to work in the social work field and from there I have decided helping others and learning more about psychology is what is most important to me. The ability to help others is something that is most important to me because of my personal experiences and where I came from. I want to help others in the way that I could not be helped. Therefore I want to work towards opening up a group home or owning a private practice counseling children and working with their families to build a healthier home life for their child and themselves. I am confident in my abilities to be able to provide services to these individuals so that they can have a higher chance of resiliency of becoming involved with the child protective services.

Reflection

The summary of what I have learned involves several different aspects. I understand more about APA and conducting research with the completion of research papers. I have learned substantial amount of information regarding the different factors of psychology. My experiences over the course of my education involves applied learning with diversity. I had the opportunity to conduct interviews and learn how to determine the issues related to what was being discussed. If given a psychological issue there might be certain aspects that I have strengths in and some that I have weaknesses in. A strength would be in ethics and diversity in that I understand the ethical boundaries in my work. In diversity I have extensive exposure in that I understand personal biases and possess the ability to gain awareness. A weakness is in research methods in that there is moderate exposure where I can explain two research designs, tools and findings of an article.

My Future in Learning

As a lifelong learner I see myself keeping up with new research and updated materials on psychology and social work. I will continue to understand and take trainings on what is effective for clients and how I will be able to help them best. It will be important to me to learn as much as I can about the field of psychology because it applies to my everyday life and how I can improve therapy. The best way to help individuals is through understanding important information and staying up-to-date on psychological materials.
